in the bankruptcy proceedings against

Wooster's memory appeared bad, and
Albert Wray, who was examining him,

$500 each. Wray asked if Mrs. Howard
Gould hud not paid him more.

Lee, commanding the Confederate Vet
erans, gives an explanation of the let
ter written by Mrs. Jefferson Davis,
which creuteil much comment among
the United Daughters of tho Confeder
acy.
The full text of the Mrs. Jefferson
Davis' letter was withheld from publi
cation. It gave Mrs. Davis' reasons for
having made her homo in the North
after tho war mid criticised Mississippi,
the state of Jefferson Davis' residence.
Letter Explained.

ter says:
"As to this letter of my mother's, al
low mo to say that It was written some
tun years ugu and was prompted by a
desire to Justify her actions In the ey
of tho Southern people, whom she loved
with unfailing loyalty nnd devotion.
This defense of herself, sent to tt friend
to bo rend after her death, she wrote
after numberless articles from different
newspapers nml letters condemning her
action* were rerelvcd by her when she
was In falling health. If she had been
consulted by those in whose hands It
was placed, the letter would never have
been made public, for only last spring,
after discussing the fact of Its exlst-
p, Iny mother derided to recall II,
mul I hoped, until I heard of its being
read, that It had been destroyed.
"Whatever my mother may have been
goaded to writing nt the time this let
ter was sent to Julia Kimbrough, slto
felt safe In the love, respect and con
sideration of her own people and

lived and died. If her health hud per
mitted, but unfortunately she could
not bear the excessive heat of the
South and was very prone to malarlu.

noon Judge Pendleton granted Cham
bers At Edward*, general merchants.
Marietta road, an injunct tun Against
the Houtlmm railway, restraining tho
company from abandoning tracks
tracks used by it between the eastern
and western ends of the Inman yards.
It is alleged in the petition thut fifteen
mbs puM plaintiffs made a contract
with the railroad to build a spur track
to their store. It Is claimed defendant

the fulfillment of th© contract over the
Nashville, I'hnttanoogu and St. Louis
the Western and Atlantic railroads.
The Injunction prohibits their doing so.
The regular hearing of the case will he
December 20.

Charlotte. N. ('., Deo. 12.—An attempt
was made here to burn the oow school
building, known as the North graded
public'school. The lives of 800 children
were'placed In Jeopardy. A boy, Silas
Fink, Is under arrest charged with be
ing the Incendiary. Tho hoy, It Is al
leged, went Into the basement of the
building anil selecting a place near the
wooden partitions he made a pile of
rubbish and then put a match to It.
The partitions were burning brightly
when the flames were discovered. Tho
Janitor seised, buckets tilled with water
and put out the blase, which In five
minutes might have been beyond eou-
trol. The hoy Is said to have confessed,
but lie gives no motive for setting tho
building on lire.
