Father John E. Gunn delivered the first of a series of lectures on the trouble in France between the church and state Sunday morning In the Sa cred Heart church at high moss. The article written by Father Gunn for The Georgian, In which the mntter was fully discussed, aroused consider able interest In the subject and as a result it was to a larga congregation that the gifted and eloquent Catholic scholar spoke Sunday. Beginning with the making of the concordat—the treaty between Franco and the Vatican by Napoleon—Father Gunn discussed the articles of this measure and pointed out the errors In the reports sent out from France to the newspapers. He called attention to the fact that the Mute had u Hi1bsldl7.fi press and that the Vatican hod no such channel of publicity In which to scat ter Its side of the question to the people of the civilized world. For this reason he urged his hearers to be slow In ac cepting the reports sent out from France, but to wait and hear the other side. Father Gunn pointed out five errors about five essential factors In the mis understanding. He named these ns fol lows: The concordat, tho separation law*, the parish associations fenturc, the authority of France and tho proba ble Issue of It all. Then he discussed each feature In Itself, reciting the history of each, and went Into every detail In an interesting manner. Owing to the breadth o'f the subject and the necessity of going Into It In de tail. the lectures will be continued by Father Gunn for several Sundays. THE PRODIGAL SON, SUBJECT OF SERMON "The Prodigal Bon" was the subject of a sermon by Dr. Broughton Hundav night, which tvas one of the strongest and most forceful ever heard In Atlan ta. Dr. Broughton took his text from Luke xv.. 11-12. Dr. Rroughton stated that what In his mind caused so much failure on the part of young men Is a false conception of life. This, he said. Is shown, tlm.. by the “crazy disposition on their part to get auav from home and home In fluences;” second, "the extravagant manner In which young men spend what they get:" third, "this false Idea of life is shown In the exhibition of their Impudent dependence." Washlrgton, Dec. 17.—Congressman John A. Moon, representing the Third Tennessee district, will ber named as tho new member of the rivers and har bor committee. Thut this will be the result of the re cent effort on the part of the Georgia delegation to secure one of their < number as successor to tho vacancy on the committee caused by the death of Congressman Lester Is certain. Minority Leader John Sharp Wil liams had . fixed _ upon Congressman Small for the place, but the North Carolina congressman Is not acceptable to Kf»eaker Cannon, whose dictum Is final in such matters. Congressman Moon's appointment Is depenaent upon his acceptance of the place. It was tendered him unofficial y last week, but he did not then signify his Intentions ns regards It. It Is Im probable, however, that he will de cline a committeeship, so eagerly sought by all of the states. In the sixtieth congress another va cancy on this committee will be created by the retirement of Congressman John H. Bankhead, of Alabama. Tho Democrats have centered on Congress man John L. Burnett, of Alabama, for this vacancy, and It is pretty sure fl.at he will be the man. Advocates of owning the Coosa riv er to the gulf will rejoice In the pros, pi ct of getting Congressman Burnett on the committee, as Ids district lies along this Important stream, nml he Is an ardent advocate of Coosa river Im provement.
