AFTER HOLDING POLICE AT BAY, HE KILLS SELF Burglar Sends Three Bullets Into His , , Heart. • New York, Dec. 1#.—A tall, thin, ymfng man. with a very pallid complex ion,, ran north on Elizabeth' etreet, coughing violently as he fled. In his left'hand was a revolver, and people gave him a wide berth. On Beecher etreet his pace grew slower, and a po< Herman and two men In plain clothes, one of whom had fired two ehots at the fleeing man, closed In on him. At the corner of the Bowery and Second street the fugitive seemed to be exhausted. He leaned against an area ratling a few doors east of the Bowery, on Second street, and swung the re volver slowly in a half circle for a moment to hold his pursuers back. Then he turned the revolver toward his breast and shot himself through the heart. Quite by accident, Samuel Reyman, Jr., a Jeweler of 62 ML Vernon avenue, Mt. Vernon, had chanced upon the fu gitive at the corner of Houston and Elizabeth streets, and had recognised him as a burglar who had come Into Hcyman's Jewelry shop In Mt. Vernon the night before and had robbed the place while .the Jeweler looked Into the 12 S«»tUi'HuSwM ISCMtJWe Sf S CM IN t. I No Michiat Mid «f IS.,., toy b«it»r. Ob, term* sr. U« a«t liberal. Three steel bullets had entered the man’s breast before hts.grlp on the trigger loosened. Then he slid to the pavement In a limp heap. A photograph was brought down from the rogues' gallery and when the fea tures of the suicide were compared with It there was no doubt In the minds of any one present that the dead man was William Madison, alias Angus Mc Pherson, a bell boy and former member of the Seventy-first regiment during the Spanish war, who smashed the show window ‘ of Robert Simpson & Co.’s pawn shop In West Forty-second street on the afternoon of December 29, 1902, and then scattered almost 210,000 worth of Jewels In the snow, while being pursued over Fortieth street.
