THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN, THURSDAY. DECEMBER SOCIETY CHARLOTTE STEWART. SELENE ARMSTRONG. Assistants. mmmsm FAREWELL, SANTA CLAU8. The midnight hour l» sped, - And distant bells come faintly to my ears; Old Santa Claus Is dead! I wish you "Merry Christmas," but a tear Creeps to my smarting eyes; For I have lost a friend of yester year. Whose Jovial disguise Made midnight Joyous: as the love of man Shone from him like a light That burned within his bosom—made of bran— And snow-clad fields of white Seemed weird to me because his telnderr ran. But Santa Claus Is not! If SO it be, let's raise to him a stone I'pon some sacred spot In name of little children who. are grown. And on this pillar white, 'Neath skies as bracing as his bonny laugh. Let carven words Indito The love we bore him In an epitaph. And round the marble base, In tearful mem'ry of our childhood We.^grav-hnlred babes, shall place The long-lost fragments of forgotten toys. And where the dipper shines on wan, white Helds of wintry ice and snow Shall rise pathetic shrines— The skates and knives and sleda of long ago. Then from that mournful mound That marks his grnve we'll, weeping, turn; nor pause To heed the solemn sound Of phantom slolgh-bells. Farewell, Santa Claus! „ .. —Edward 8. Van Zlle in Collier's Weekly. MI88ES ORR TO ENTERTAIN. A beautiful party of Saturday after noon will be the euchre at which Misses Lena and Alice Orr will enter tain.
