COTTON EXCHANGE MA Y ALTER ITS SYSTEM OF PRICE DIFFERENCES Plan of Revising ‘Spot’ Quotation Needs Change. * A COMMITTEE HAS MATTER IN CHARGE Members of the Exchange Say They Think No-Fraud Order Will Be Issued. N«w York, Dec. 29.—Officers of the cotton exchange are not Inclined to be lieve that there Is any danger of a fraud order against the exchange ns a result of a protest made by Southern cotton growers. The movement to ob- tain such an action, It tvaa said, ema nated from speculators In the South who are disgruntled over changes In the grading of the staple by the New York exchange, not by the cotton grow ers themselves, who are aided by the new grading. That there was need of altering the system of revising quotations of spot cotton wan admitted, and It was said that' the revision committee of tho cotton exchange was considering meas ures to that end; Since, however, un der the present system contracts are made as far ahead as next. September, they declared that nothing can be done which will be-effective In less than a year. Representatives of' large cotton houses say that the differences In prices of spot cotton between New York and the Southern markets and the delivery of cotton below middling In New York at prices much higher than those for the same grades In the South were rapidly bringing about a crisis In cotton 1 circles In this city. The condition Is very serious, they said, working at times a great Injustice to growers and at times a great Injustice to spinners. / Unless It Is remedied, they said, ths standing of the New York cotton ex change was certain to be seriously Im- imlred. For several 1 weeks some of the leading cotton houses in the city have been fostering a movement for the correction of the abuses, and today It became known that this movement has attained such proportions that un less the management takes action at an early date a commmlttee will be formed to take charge of the reform movement, and an active campaign will be Instituted. The managers of the cotRm ex change held a meeting yesterday, but took no action. It was said, however, after the meeting that recommenda tions will be made In the near future. m FOURTH NATIONAL BANK BUILD UNO. 'RHONE ISM. PLASTER COMPANY. WOODWARD LUMBER COMPANY.
