We bare still more encouraging intelli gence from New England. The books ore nil strengthening themselves, busiucts goes on without interruption, and there is no lack of Bpecic. The Oaliforoia steamer, now nearly dee, will furnish s material item of additional strength to the New York market. The Baltic, today, sailed for Liverpool.— She took out filiy-tno passengers. Among the number was Beverly Tucker, his wile, and a long list of little Tuckers. Tbunu# Con sul to Liverpool was escorted to the steamer by a large number of bis prominent politiaal friends in tbit city, and any one who happened to be on the Canal street dock at the t'me, would have (aid there were “high old times” going on. ATLANTA, OCTOBER 3, 1837. Correspondence of Hie Charles- . ton C'onrler. L N'tw Vonk, 8ept. 2G. ; Mr. Wesley, the Wall street Broker, and chief proprietor of the Tima, has dissolved bis business connexion with bis former part ner, and retired from the stock broker's bn iioess. Whether he has also dissolved his connexion with the Tima newspaper is not stated. The imprint of Raymond, Wesley i A Co., no longer appears npon the paper,— ' He and Mr. McElrath are the only two news paper men who have “caved in” thus far.— •- Tbs others oil stand firm. The failure, of Bangs, 13ro. A Co. has been announced. This house was, for msuy years, the establishment for the trade eaka of books twioo * year. They had one of these salos this month. A year ago an opposition con- k oern was started, and maoy of the leading publishing houses weut ovsr to them. There ' seems to be a very great weakness amoug the paper men generally, especially tbs manufac turers and publishers. Tbs time* are entirely out of joint to-day. One boars of nothing but failures. Every body says the wont point ought to be reached by this time. To-day it was announced that • tbo principal Banks of Baltimore had sus pended. After'this, same rumors that the New England Banks bad adopted the same coarse. A friend of mine, having some little New England money, thought he would try and set if tbo rumor was correct. Oolng to the Metropolis Bank, it was readily taken at a disooopt of ono tenth of one per cent But the brokers really refuse to buy uny other m.oaoy than that of the State', of. New York, and Tor this they charge a discount ol' one par cent, Boms of the leading banking bouses Of Wall street wilt hot purchase drafts for the smallest sams on the South. Even where they have been in the habit of doing boslncss tot years, they say they are com pelled to refuse. We are in fact drifting down a very ugly stream. Everybody is alarmed, and one friend reads to' another, tbo prediction of the Herald, and instantly they both go off in convulsions of four. The Herald is always an omen of ill in fi- 1 nancial matters. In the langnuge of Wail street, it is, and has always been a “bear,” and many persons connected with the cstab liibmenhonly want the wool and claws, to .-junto, .ttan..-this particular species of the genius animal la its issns of tosday, the Herald says with owl-llke wisdom, that; The end is by no means yet, and will not be until every vestige of the present credit system has been swept away. Oor rail roads, oar banks, land speculators, and speculators i la everything else, must come down to the I hanlpan—to tbo very bottom—and there Jltand ilMil all fictitious values buvu disap peared. This will come, and at no very dis tant dsy. The banks of this city will stand firm amid ail the dcsolatiou and devastation aroand them j aod it is well for the country that they have the strength to do so. We look for a general suspension of specie pay ments throughout the North, West aod East, out of tbo city of New York. Throughout the wbolo of New England there must be a general bank suspension. The only light . spot amidst so much gloom—the only oasis in such a desert-will be this little Island of _Now York, aod from this spot must emanate all the recuperative power for future ad vancement and prosperity. The banks of f thls city are fortunately strong, anil wo think there is no doabt bat they can sustain them selves. Thesospevsion in Philadelphia, and thooo which most follow in other cities, is merely a ipeclo monument. In answer to this, l quote Jreei one af the evening popettifl this 6»rfdxiou j e ue^Hstlo sny that this does not by juste prevalent feeling in I. “tsfing circles.
