The Fatal Duel at Stockton. IVr bare stated the principal, facta in relation to tho unfortunate duel between Mr. (J. M. Blair and Col. Casey, at Btook- ton, which resulted in tho death of the latter. There are other pirticu'ars eon. nuclei with the affajr which undoubtedly will prove of interest to our readers 1 We nuoto fromkho Stockton Argus of Wednes day ' A duel came off at un narljr'hour Tues day morning, a lew miles from this city, between Mr. C. M. Blair and Col. Casey, both of Merced county. A bitter animosi ty has for some lime past existod between tic parties, growing out of a rivalry in the effort to obtain tho Rand ef a Miss L , a young lady of prepossessing personal appearance and accompliihinrnt, at pres ent residing with her father on the Stanis- laus. Mr Blair and Colt Casey-met in lie harrootn nf tho Weber House on Monday morning, eaeh accompanied by friends, where a conversation ensued be tween them, at first apparently in a friend ly manner; hut Blair becoming vexed at the iudilVnrencn which his rival assumed, made some severe charges which Casey denounced ». false, and, at the same lime rising from his seat, struck Blair a severe blow with his flat Casey drew his re- voi. v, but was prevented from using it br V't.o\» present. Blair, being unarmed, ,-1 back, but waa panned by Casey, ivTvVPhlm another severe blow upon 9> mu. Tho friends of the parties, how- succeeded in preventing bloodshed restoring order; shortly after which ...ngementa ware made for a settlement if tho diffieqlty by other mean*. Yester day morning waa fixed aa thei time of meeting,’at a place throe mile* from the city, where the parties met at about day light, accompanied by eerundt aad a few spectator*. The grouDd wa* measured- * distant* of ten paeee—and th* word being given, shot* were exchar.gtd. On ihe first dm rsrh pa»ty_mla»«l aim. The second shot took effect upon Casey, eaua- |„gs slight flesh wound. Upon attempting the third shot, the'cylinder upon Caaey'a piatol refused to rcvolvo Jn consequenco of an imploded oap lodging upon tiro tube. Firing was then discontinued for about ten minutes, during which timo the weapons (Colt’s six sbootore) were reloaded in every chamber, apd firing wae again re turned. Each party exchanged etx shots in quick succession (without the “word,”) three of which took offect upon Caeey, whilo Blair escaped without injury. The most dangerous wound received by Casey, was a shot which entered lire peritoneum or abdominal lioing. A ball also passoA through the abdominal muroies. Notnithn ■landing the wound* received by Cot Casey, it is said that lie exhibited an apparent unconcern throughout the firing, lie was brought into the city by his friends and is at present at the Magnulia House. Blair,, as might have been expocted, Las made Iris oscape, probably to await tiro result of Casey’s wounds. Wo have known Col. Caacy for a num ber of years as ona of the earliest settlers upon the farming lands along iheTuciumiie river. Ho is known and esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, as a gentleman worthy of ail confidence ; and we trust that the unfortunate affair in Which he has become involved may r.nt terminate fatally; The duel is undoubtedly ono of the most desperate upon iccorcf, and wo only rogrel the necessity that com pelled a resort to each hazardous meat s of adjusting a personal difficulty. The San Joaquin (tepullican, remarking upon tho incidents of tho affair, says, that badly woanded as Cpl. Casey was, ho in sisted upon having another round ol six shots each, which his friends, of course, prohibited. Casey subsequently died of nis wounds Heath nf a Pioneer Printer.—On Tues day morning, 13th inst., Doi'olass Meoumt, ono of tho pldcsl citizens of Indianapolis, died. He went to that city among thu first sealers, and in 1023 established there the ff'eitern Ctntnr, which was, wc be lieve, the first paper in that place. In 1825 lie changed its name to that of the Indiana Journal, which it still retains. arrabrUfro Btmtorg ItAiL-K0AD REGISTER, ileorgia Railroad, itUITZ TO ACOCVI4 171 UlIJ* r.ll SS M. Mtralag Pui'r.
