Morning I 1 Beamless Garments. A party of gcntlemou, including severitt members of the press, wore iaritcJ on Thursday last to visit tbe works of the Seamless Garment Company at Matteanan, near Fishkill, and wo improved the oppor tunity to examine tbe curious and interest ing processes by which wooion garments arc produced without a seam, am! of great er strength, durability and warmth than cloth made in ordioary manner. The Company ocoupy soveml buildings formerly used as cotton mills. Thor’ the well-known Matteawnn cottons used to b; made. Tho locality is a beautiful one, nest led in a gentle valley with hold and thick- wooded hills behind. The water-powor is abundant. The works now employ some hundred and fifty operatives of both rexes. We examined the manufacture from tho crude wool to tho finished garments. The wool is first assorted, cleaned, picked, dye-1, and pottiaily carded as in an ordinary wool en factory. Tho last process of the carding machiuo leaves it in a thin layer. It is then put upon an ingenious machine which forms it into what are cal cd halts. These batts are composed of some thirty to forty layers, placed by tho machine diagonally noross each other. The fibres of the alter nate layers are thus arranged transversely to eaoh other. This gives the greatest possible strength to the cloth to bo produced, rende ring it os elastic as castimero and ns tough as leather. The batt, when completed, is passed through a felting machine, in which tbe fibers of the wool are partially interwus ▼en so us to form a thick cloth of consider able tenacity. This is then taken to the tailor, who outs out in pieces the garment*^ _ to be made, taking caro to out them about «' ,rnl!, e Can a Minis! er Marry a Divorced Tin man.—Kev. Mr. Shields.' of Iowa, having bent silenced by the Preihytery of Dss Moines for marrying n woman who had b <n divorced by tho laws of Iowa, appealed to the Synod, and his appeal was sustained.— The Synod expresses its opinion that the ac tion of the I’rcsbytcry was correct in form, and suggested by a laudable zeal in the mis vice of tho church; and althu’ sustaining Mr. Shields, does not approvo of bis marriage, as is shown by tbo following resolution: lie-solved, That in restoring Bar. J. II. Shields to bis formor position in tho gospel ministry, tho Synod should not be under stood as approving the contracting of mur- risge, especially by ministers of tbe gospel with parsons divorced for whatever cause, believing that such loarriugcs impair useful ness, influence and atanding, and bring into question tbs purity and wisdom of the par ties thereon. <0u Amoug tho advertisements iu a late London pnper, we read that “Two sisters want washing P‘ Uif At a recent railroad festival, the following conceit wsb given : “Our Moth ers—Tbo utly faithful tenders who never misplaced a switch. pgg‘ A new book lias been published ens titled, “Gouge on Banking.’’ Wo think “Books on Gougiug’ would bo more app i- cobleto the times. |@*Tbedebt of nature" should never be -aid, if U cju’t bo wtleuM wiebooSau •lo cution. The garments now exhibit a rude approach to their proper shape. A cotton cloth haring been inserted within tbo sleeves and the pockets, and wherever elso two thickucescs come togotber, in order to prevent their be ing converted into one, tbe garments are again passed through the felting machine, and soon come out with no trace of tbe seams exoept tbs cotton basting thread, wbioh is aasily pnlleu out. They are then treated much like so many pieces of ordina ry woolen cloth, being passed through a fulling apparatus, teas led and sheared. Af ter this, they are put upon copper forms, hrated by steam, which complete their shape, and ullow tbe surface to be finished. They then go into the hands of tbe trimmer, who binds the edges, works the button holes, pats on the buttons and facings, and gots them ready for market. Among the articles which we raw manu factured were overcoats, busimss costs, vests, leggins and meltin'. The eloth was tub- jeetsd to severe tests of its strength, nnd found to be surprisingly tonscious. It diff- era from felt cloth in being equally strong ia whatever way it ia tried. It is altogeth er of wool, a* cotton cannot he used in tho felting process. Its advantages over com mon oloth are greater cheapness, warmth and durability; it also sheds rain much better.
