Cancer is a malignant diseosa, deriving its name from Karkfim, a Greek word sip* oifying a crab, because the tumor with its swollen veins bean no remote rwemblacc to that animal, it occurs in two distinct stages, vis the Scbirrus of Occult Cancer, and the open or true ulcerated Cancer. It is an hereditary disease, depending upon a weak and morbid state cf the patient, immediate ly arising from corruption of the v tality of the fluid jn ij sdid, Ir >m defective nutrition and lecretk-n. It may remain in the first stage for years; a single pale, hard, eold tu mor; bnt it never retrograde. It oommonly advances to a soft, suppurated and ulcerated state, affecting tbs neighboring glandee, and gradually poisoning the whole system. The general health of tha patient yields, and, tin- able to successfully eemtut the infection, na ture gives say and the patient dies. Such is the ordinary bLtory of the disease; unaL ievtatsd by iho appliances of science and art. Pren us to the dtuorerits of Dr. Gilbert. a., the medioal faculty, though earnestly searching for a specific for thia terrible ma lady, devoted their skill to palliating the ad tings and prolonging the life of their patients. If, however, any Isitb can be •Iren to the testimony of those who have >een under Dr. Gilbert’s care, and they are from some of the most respectable and in telligent gentlemen of our country, the afflicted cannot, in justice to themselves or their friends, refuse to udopt his treat ment. In reference to the case of Ex-Governor T. M. Tucker, of Mississippi, cured of a can cerous tumor til his face by Dr. Gilbert, the N. 0. Mr. John Carson, of Franklin. La., who had been suffering for ten years from u can cer, writes tothe editor of the Planters f Lou,) Banner, with reference to his application to Dt. Gilbert, as follows: “I at that time wanted but oue month nf being 7? years of age: nod tho natural in firmities of my age, my protracted sickness, a cancer in my r.ese, and another targe one trader my ear, nil these, added to the fatigue of my johraoy, appeared enough to render my ease eotiroly hopo’ts*. “I was uodrfthe care of Dr. Gilbert a boat six weeks. In about twelve slays he removed the cancer attached to ray t ose, and in about twelve days more the jjilae.- from which it was taken healed up.
