ATLANTA, NOVEMBER 10 1857 Later from California. By tho steamer Quaker City atXcw York, from Havana, wo have tho inti llijicnco that the steamer Star of the West, from Asj iu- wall for New York, arrived ut Havana On tho afternoon of tho 29th ult. The Star of the West had on board 715 passengers (all well) the mails 81,000,000 in gold for New ' York, and S’>00,000 fur Europo. She was to loave for New York on the tiOth. Twen ty-live of her passengers came to this port on tbo Quaker City, .The cause'of h.*r deten tion was tho non-arrival of the Pacific steamer Goldeo Gate. That steamer left San Francisco on the 5th October; hut on tho following day hor machinery (in part) became disabled, nnd she was compelled tu return to port, where she arrived on tho loth. The ensuing day her passengers, specie and mails were transferred to the stcnincr Gold n Age, and again took their departure, a ving at l'anama on the 2-lih. The same day, the passengers, Ac., reached Aspinwall, ■ anil immediately embarked on board of .tho Star of the Wrst, which had awaited their arrival. By the Quaker City we received a copy of Iho San Francisco Herald, from which wo gatWif the following items of nows: Tho ollieinl returns from nearly all tho counties in tho State give Well 11,038 ma jority over both tho other candidates. Tho total voto was about 90,000. Tho Scnato stands 25 Democrats to 5 Re publicans, and tho Assembly 54 Democrat, 9 Republicans, 3 Americans, und4 Indepen dent. Tho majority in favor.of the Stato Debt is about 30,000 The rumor of the exodus of tho Carson Valley to Utah is confirmed, and the ridicu lous report that a battle had occurr d be tween tho U. S - troops and the Mormons at Salt Lake City contradicted. Tho crop of cereals raised in California will be largely ahead of the consumption. It was an id that the overland mail route from Sau Diego to San Antonio. Texas, would take passoogers on its trip of October 9 th. Tho nows of tho commencement of the panio in New York did not eroato much surprise in California. A project is now on fooj in California for raising money for the construction of a wag. on-rood from Clear Lake to the S icrnmento Valley, at a point nearly west from Colusi, a distance of soino 25 or 30 miles from the Valley, usd .75 miles from Morysvilio. Tho best butter and cheese that California pro duces oro the products of the Clear Lake valleys, and the dairy business is already carried on there to an extent which woild supriso those unacquainted with it. The overland immigration is still making iti way to tbo California borders, and the report is that it meets with considerublo trouble from tho Indians and n lot of white Tobbers who aro in companionship with tho savages. Parties from California have gone out on the wegon routes in order to fall iu vith the perpetrators of the outrages, aud punish them accordingly. Great excitement oxisted between tho So- • norians and tbose on the Gadsden purchase, , find no Americans were allowed a passport into Sonora. The Himo Indians, in Arizona, had chas tised the Yumoa and Apaches for killing sop? Of their- women and children. The I’imoe killed 100 or 160 of their opponents and lost only 25 themselves. Lato accounts from the hood of Uambokit, stato that Kirk’s Wagon-road party had been attacked by the Indians, bnt had been driven off without any loos to the party. The Mormone were to leavo Carson Valley on the 25tb of October. Brigham Young has ordered a secret cavalry company to or. ganizo from tbe Saits in Carson Valley armed and equipped with' one year’s provisions and clothing. It i. said to be tboir inten. tion, should matters got too serious, to sock a refuge in tbc Busslon possessions whore they have already driven tbo stakes lor a new Zion. There is later news from the Sandwiob Islands but it is unimportant. . Tho Oregon Constitutional Convention lisd yet done nothing. Mining returns since the departure of tbe previous steamers aro represented as very encouraging. Quart; operation) have taken a now start, owing to Bomo rich discoveries which have been made recently lu different portions of tbc State. fhe Union Democrat, publirhed at Sonos V*, has the following uotioe of quartz open- [ ..lions iu that vicinity: This locality bids fair to be soon one of be moat important mining camp* in our , 'ronntry. That which has made Angels, in , Calaveras, one of the most nourishing of our J nd (owns, will onrioh and improve not i Tattlctown, bat Sonora snd Columbia i iQ Tuolumne county. We allude to its *qimi*a resources. Without a doubt the ■I mines In this neighborhood are tbe «In tbs ooonty.nni, although it is only months since that any attention wae >ai i io them, there tvs several mills boiag touted and several others contemplated.— Vo have beard of annmberof "big strikes," '* consider them of little importance corn ed ta tbe veins in which tbs rook ail pays ' i plenty of it. Every oat has beard of Hie famous ‘-Winter’s lead at Angel's Camp. It is not a "quartz load,’’ os many suppose, but it is composed of a material called, we believe, talc. This is a white or grayish formation thickly interspersed with pyrites of iron. The "pyrites’, contain largo quan tities of gold, ami it can be extracted only by smelting,(or reduction wilh acids. Some of it, collected from tbe “Winter's" lead is of almost faoulous richness. The owners now ship it to England, where tbe gold is extracted. Ons ton sent there yielded the immense sum of BCventoen hund&od and twenty-two ounces of gold. It is well known that tliis lead traverses tbe length of the State, following tbe run of the large "Carson Creek” quartz voin. We copy the following from the Nevada Journal: “We wore presented a fow days since with u piece of specimen dirt from the she Nebrnsku shaft owned by the Messrs. Dawley, Mills A Co. It is exceedingly rich. There has been token from the claims more ton $80,000 niready, and tbe prospects arc now richer tbau ever before. One engine has been at work upon the ground in the past, and another is in process of erectiou. For tho ten months past the compuny has boon cutting through the rocks.’’ Kxodl-s nr tub Mormons or Carson Valley.—Wo copy tho following telegraph ic desputch from the Sacrnmonto State Jour nal. It is dated Geuoa, September 17. It will be si cn that by it the rumor of tho ex odus of the Mormons of Carson Valley, by order of Brigham Young, is confirmed.— Tbe settlors in that Valley will havo a hap py riddanco of them. The dispatch also oonveya the gratifying intelligence that the immigration of tho presont year will fully reach 25,000, und probialy 30,000 two-thirds of who® arc womon and children. This will make n grsat addition to our population. Noxt yo-ir we may expect 50,000 at least: ‘‘The Mormons arc all making prepara tions to leave for the Great Salt Lake; they will leave here in about ten days, aod will havo in their train over ono hundred wagui.s. Their farms havo boeu pufeht sed by immi grants coming over the I’laios this eeas.m. The immigration this year is immense. The Valley is all alive with men, women, chil dren end nnimals, who have just arrived over tbo Plains. The immigration this year will reach full 25,000, and probably 30,000. Two thirds aro women and children.'' A T. UACKIiTT, Alt HUNK V AT m LAW, Kingtold,Oeurgia,niH practice mine following counties: Cotooas, ChaRSuga, Murray. Gilmer, Whilfield, Gordon, Walker, Dade.
