ATLANTA, GEORGIA. SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER o, lsf>
a8
ATLANTA. DECEMBER 5 18S7
. From the Daily Newt, City Article.
Thursday Eveoing, Nov. 12.
This day will long bo memorable in com
mercial ttnnolj ae that on wbicli the provis
ion. of tbe BanR Charter Act were, fur a
ccoond time, suspended. The relief hes not
come a moment fed .eon, Tbe profound
sensation exeited by the suspension of the
great boil* of Messrs. Sandemaa A Co-
was succeeded this morning by e more ac
tive fecliog of distrust. In tbe discount
market business was almost at e stand still;
discounters held their bands, and the feeling
of painful expectation among the public bo
came intense. Meanwhile tbe rush to ob
tain accommodation at the batik become ex
ceasivc. Amid tbo general excitement, bow
every reflecting persona saw clearly that tbo
orisii bad at length come, and that the pro
viiloae of the aet of 1644 must bo broken
through. It was soon anonnoed that a de
putation from the bank, were about to have
an interview with the Minister; and Irom
that moment, despite several agitating ru
mors that assistance had beenrefosed by the
Government, the pnblio feeling became
calmer. About 3 1-3 o’clock, amid extreor.
dinary excitement, the bank broker nnoun-
ced in th. Stock Exchange that Uorernment
had autcoriaed the Bank of England to is-
sue notes to any amount that may ho re
quired, "on approved securities,” at a rate
of disoo4St;otnot kb than ten per cent, per
annum.
-The intelligence spread like wildfire
through tho ofty, and was recaived in every
cirele With a feellog or relief proportionate
to tbe anxioty previously caiortainej. The
offset of the intelligence in the discount nmr
ket wes very satisfactory. In every quar
ter a more confident feeling was engendered,
the bar to the circulation of capital b-.ing
removed. This afternoon tho principal dis
count' 'establishments afforded accomoda
tions freCtjf to their regular customers, al
though of course charging an advance upon
tbe bank rate At tho bonk Itself the gen
eral demand to-day was to an extent never
boforc wituossed, and the Directors acted
with most commendable liberality. Now
that tbe feeling of alarm, oxcilM by a con
sideration of tbo rapidly diminishing rcsour
cos of the bank, i. allayed, there is strong
ground to hope that tbe recent unpreccdcnt
edly severe demand will subside' it is cor
loin, from tin drain lately witnessed, that
tbe next return will show the bank to be in
a much worse position than oven io the mom
orable October of 1847; butas matters now
stand, this need excitc no uneasiness. Tbe
state of the banking rcaerve i» immaterial,
how that wo know that this no longer forms
the limit of the Bank’, resources. As re
gards the bullion, it must he remembered
that the £1,000,0U0 in eoin which was with
drawn within two days was taken almost
solely by the Scotch and other bank-, and
that the return ot this amount at a future
dsto may be relied upon almost with certain
ty. In tqo immediate a.pcot of the foreign
bullion drain there is nothing to exoite aux-
isty,£200,000 worth of Australian gold has
reached, onr coast to-dsy, and upward of
£500,000, ax tbe steamer'Emeu, is expected
to arrive a week hence, being now on the
way acrom tho Isthmus of Sue*.
Dome further but moderate amounts of
sovereigns-waretakenfrom tbe bane to-day
lor trtnsmoslon to Sodtland, as a measure
of precaution.
The nccoqnts Received from Scotland to
day .vfen of a rnora' reassuring character. A
very tnnquilixing effect has been produced
at Glasgow,by the arrival of inch enormous
amounts of specie and there is reason to bo-
lioro that the ran for gold will soon subside-
It isevsa alleged that there is a proipectof
the oily of Glasgow bank being enabled to
reopen it*steoi*--»noM-ss»al

Loss or thk Schoonib Arrrxwrx—Ftvx
Lira. Lost.—Every day seems to bring us
a fresh load of horrors. Yesterday Capt.
Parker of tbs echooosr H Band arrived
with (ho sad inteltigenes that the schooner
Antelope which lelttMs port on Wednoe-
dajUast wlih 14,-000 boahcli of wheat for
Oswego, was lost a boat eight miles north of
fit. Joseph oh. Friday last, and that the Cap
win (Geo. Bndd) and font of the' crew baa
perished. The partioalnrt—at far ae we
coaid learn tborn-aro ns fellows;
Uro night, it appears, the sea made ulean
breeches over the veracl oud tho auffvrings
of the ore tv wore dreadful- Lite could not
have held uu more than an hour or two long
er. As it was they hail to bo most careful-
lv uorsed and attended by the people who
live in tbo neighborhood—who most cheer,
folly exerted themselves to restore them.
When Capt. Parker loft four of them were
in a fair way of recovery. Tbo falo of a
flfih was more doubtful.
The Antelope will bo a total loss. Cibo
was on A No. 1 vessel, owned by J A Hall
& Co., and was valued at $11,000. We are
informed that the North weetern insurance
Co., have risks on hull and cargo to tbo oi»

Fine Preaching-
Tho curse Of the ngo is|fine preaching;
it is morbid “«d pestilential, Tho won' of
tho nge is plain intelligent preaching, eug-
ge-live and illustrative; preaching absor
bing ail that eloquence enn offer, but elo
quence adapting itself (without which it
ceases to ho eloqacnoejto the wants and
states of the people; availing itself of tbe
lights of history for illustration ; or of sci
ence for confirmation ; or of philology for
elucidation, nnd balding also that they
may reflect their raps upon the genius of
Christianity, onddevclope its superior lustre,
adaptability, and power.
The attempt to say fine things in the pul
pit is a solemn sin, and fine sermons (like
ell other flnery)are veryevanvescent in their
inflnenco. Let the fine sormon sjBtem die out
as fast as possible, useless as it is to God
and man. It devolves upon a few men to
show to those not gifted with so much mor
al conrage, that there is every thing to gain
and nothing to loee by the adoption of the
baneet system of instruction. Iotellig ence
will never bide away to the man able to
teaoh.—Gospel Messenger.
