Alisa I nm n littlo afraid you ami I
shall never eome together. There is that
expectation of flattery about you which I
cunnol hear, yot as I love you well enough
w ho honest—a oolil word that—I will
once for alt speak my mind, and I dosirc
your attention,
I believe I don't admire nor value you
for any of thoso charms for whicli you ad
mire and vnluo yourself; I do not, for in
stance, pay any adoration to tlio prciont
brightness of your eyes, bocause I am so
strange a fellow as to consider them philo
sophically. They nrc very brilliant to be
sure, hut what are they? What are they
Miss aboriyincl Tops, fools and poets,
would, in their usual airy manner, tell you
that they wore made of celestial fire, that
they were two animated beasts of beauty,
two loves darling mirrors, formed by the
grace, and n pack of such stuff, llut 1
scorn to figure away at the expense of fair
truth.
1 write In honest prose, Miss; and there,
fere honest prose I tell you that those same
halls of elhercal beauty, those same lore
darting mirrors, are at best two pieces of
ordinary clay varnish. The varnish, I al
low, is good, and well put on. Butwbnt
of all this? I am not so short sighted but
I can look forward a little beyond the
length of my nose, to the times when the
gloss will all he worn awoy, when the ja
pan of nature will bo utterly gone, and not
a spark of firo will you liavo about you.—
If you live lung enough, you will be pur-
blind, aud then what becomes of your love
darts, Don’t be ({tiilc so vain, my young
beauty.
Another'mighty matter upon which you
bavo, it seems, to pinuo ourselves, is your
face. It means such things as we call
cheeks, lips, and complexion. I wish it to
be known to you that I have bat a poor
opinion of theso divine graces, as you call
them.
Some timo ago, I remember you Bhowed
mo in a great air oftriump!i,a paper scrawl
ed upsn by some florid puppy of your acs
quaittlanc-, who, swore, iu very sorrow
verses, tear your cheeks threw into ullcr
dnpair all tlio roses and lillies in the crea
tion. Your skin, too, was, if 1 recollect,
polished marble. The vains wore compar
ed to the azure of the third heaven, nnd the
color whiter than alabaator.
'Tisn lii, Miss. 'Tis a lis. You are
indebted to poetical fiction for all this truth
The rogurs who deal in it have, as they
say, a license from that silly fellow Ap-
noles to play pranks with idle girls and
hoys who believe them, for my part I
never could be taken in by tho tag of o
rhyme, nor the cadence of a couplet, nor
the transportation of ten sauoy syllables,
since I was born. I always looked upon
them as mere car traps.
l-'cr inatanco, now, yoqr bosom is said to
be purer than tlio driven snow. If that is
not carrying the jest as far is it will (airly
go, I don’t know what is. Why, if your
bosom and a snow ball were shown toge
ther, and any thing in tho world but a poet
to jndge, ho would aay that you were a
swarthy tiipsoy in the comparison. But
how you ladies can bo planed with all this
high flying i* to me astonishing. If atnan
wai to compare me to a stick or a atone, or
a irec. or a plant, that I was no more than
like the mein ocean, should I hold up my
brad, and look about me the more for that!
As lor fsatures, skin, complexion, dec.,
they are so truely things of a day that if I
u as a woman I should bo afraid to put my
trim in them, 'ihsy hayo moro enemies
than tho ever persecuted have, could I re
read such a catalogue as.wouid make
“Your hair to stand on end

llo into your garden. Fix your atten
tion on tho fairest flower. Tako cam that
it n in tho luxittiancc of its bloom. Did
you ever behold tint! more oxqulsite,
scollops more exaot, colors better mixed, or
beauties better varied! Now leave It.—
Pay it a aocond viait to morrow morning
What are you aurprired all That a flow
er should lade? A light blast of wind in
the night hast wholly destroyed it. Tho
tints am dead. The colors are faded. Tbs
beauty is no more. Step to your toilette.
Indeed Miss, you are very pretty. What
a lace, what sir, what shape? In the even
ing one of tho thousand enemies of band*

‘Sot do 1 estimate you according to your
wealth—certain it is you will be inde
pendent, hut I wish yua wort not so fasci-
natieg with theta pomaasloM. I heard you
talk in each raptures of a new carriage,

What a collection of falsities is here; in
deed 1 never saw a pair of cheeks in my
life that wore fsirer than a lilly, nor a pair
of lips that were redder than a rose. As to
Alabaster, 1 will take upon me to say,
there nevor was n woman’s skin half so
white in tho whole world; and I should bo
very glad to see a complexion so well pol
ished as a piece of Egyptian marble.
“No, no, theso flights will not pass
upon men of cool prose. They will not,
indoed, Miss. Metapher my dear is a more
halm. It tickles the child’s ear, but I
heartily dosplso it. Not but that I give to
a fine form its proper portion of praise. I
am perfectly sensible to handsomo foatur-
ep. I like to see the proper proportions of
•red and white, 1 am very well pleased with
y pair of spar/Wing eyes, but I Lave no idea
of calling any of these what they really are
not, nor of comparing them with objects to
which they have no resemblance what-
eror.
Everything I have mentioned is held ott
a sad tenure, even the tonure of aregular.
pulse. I think tlioro is, under all your
false idoas, a good heno-t heart. 'Tie this,
dear one, which draws me towards you..—
I think 1 could banish the frailties that
cliog at present about your affections, If
you can boar mo after this letter, 1 shall
have a hotter opinion of you than ever. If
you aro offended and lake pot at it, I shall
lose yonr friendship and be regarded as a
hors; but thou 1 shall know by cxporienco
that your friendship was not work Booking.
Now. first break your looking glass, sa-
condly, turn all your poets out of doors;
thirdly, throw their verses into the fire! and
lastly, make.n solemn vow never more to
trust in metaphors and comparisons, two
current things, which have dode moro in
jury to young women than libertinism it
self. VVliat say you, will you believe me
honest, and the rest false? P.
