A Deluge ofRain.
Our exchanges in Tonttesw, Alabama,
and Upper Georgia, come to us with accounts
of the extent of the heavy and long continued
rains, damages, Ac., which oocnrrcd last
week.- ■.
The Huntsville (Ala.) Advocate,of 10th
Inst soya .-
“The olouds gathered, the rains descended
and thefloodscame upon ns. From Friday
night it rained almost evenly on until Mon*
day morning. And now (Tuesday) tbo heu-
vens atili Wear a wcaping face. The whole
country, has had the benefit of the floods—
crocks and rivers are ail up higher than for
years..
“The high water and the drift in Hnrri
crane crotk in this coun'y on Sunday caused
the trestle work in this bottom on tho Mem
phis uM Charleston Railroad to bulge out-
wards, soA* to render it dangerous for the
cars to cross. The train that night did not
go eastward or return. But oa Monday
night the cars weot forward, and the passen
gers Changed earn there, crossing over on foot
The <Umage has aiooe boon repaired, and the
iraiwfrun as usual, free from obstruction
and (anger.
It rained all day Tuesday, hard ail night,
and is,(Wednesday morning) still raining —
Such n All of water wo bavo never known
before, The depot grounds and all that re'
gion was from oue to two feet deep ia water
—fences, lumber, foot bridges, Ac., washed
away. The corporation ''Georgia” bridgo
was Bwept Off—Uie ‘ Piuhook” bridge was
ruined, and many bonses had one or two feet
of water in tbsm. Some families had to be
removed in the night.
“The train did not return from Stevenson
this (Wednesday) morning, and wo think we
shall not have any trains regularly for severs
al days The ram bos extended over the
wbolo country ; all the streams most be out
of their banks, and immense damage of every
kind result from the flood.”
The XaahviUeUuion A American, of 10th
iost., states that considerable damage was
done to the Nashville and Chattanooga rail
road by the roeant heavy rains.
Tho Union-says:
“By a telegraphic dispatch to Gen. An
derson from Mr. George Hooper, mail agent,
who had readied Dconcrd with the mail,
which left Chattanooga Tuesday morning, we
learn that there had been slides al the gap
upon tho treok, though to wbnt extout it is
uot stated.. The small trestle bridge over
Rush Creek at Tantalao, (foot of the moon-
tain grade beyond the tuonel,) is woshod
away. A portion of the embankment be
tween Anderson and Tanuita is washed
away, as is nbo the rock embankment above
Tantalao. ;
“The damnse to the track near Bcllbnckle
can be repaired ia a few boars after tho was
ter subsides,’ but the repairs at other points
will require considerable time.”
The Dahlonega Signal of Dec. lSib.
nays :
“For (be put week it hu been raining
almost incessantly. The streams are muon
swollen, and the weather extremely warm for
the season;**,,-,
A correspondent qf this paper, iu Dade
county represents the damage to the farmers
and millere, and to the public thoroughfares
of that county, u greater, by the recent rains
than was evef caused by floods before. ’
All the water courses ia the mountain re
gion of Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee,
were swollen to ari unusual height, and
much injnry to property resulted.—Augusta
Constitutionalist,
ked for n carbine, and with his own hand,
shot each and all three of the princes, lie
then took their bodies into the city, and laid
them out for inspection in front or the Kot-
asallie, where these wretches bad laid their
victims daring the massacre.
^Effects of Railroads,—Gov. Wise states
tint the additional revenue, from the new
assessment of lands, will bo the current
year not far short?of $400,000—showing
that our real estato has been immensely ear
hanced in value by the progress or public
works already made. The Governor pre
dicts that it will be enhanced incalculably
more when the main works are completed
and begin to yield a profit, which be adds,
oannot De long hence, if the people will pa
tiently endure the present rats of taxes.
