On the night of the 18th inst., agreeably to adjournment of a previous meeting, a large portion of the Democracy of Atlanta met at Hayden's Hall. Dr. D. X. Calhoun in the Chair, and Margenhu A. Bed acting as Secretary. During the last fiscal war there have been 1724 offices established, and 704 discontinued bring sue increase of 1031, The total number of offices at this time is 37,148, of which 368 are of the class deouminated^’reu- Mcotial. Th* number of postmasters ap pointed during the year was 8680. The transportation statistics show that oo the 30th June, there were in operation 7.888 mail routes, with a length, of 342,601 wilee, of which 22,530 arc railroad lines. The to tal annual transportation was 74,906067 miles, coating $6,622,046, giving un average of about (to c*«its ton fiw a niilo by railroad, and by steamboat auoat 22 rents a mile. The iocree'e in the length of mail room over the previous year is about 2,959 with an addition of about 9 7-10 per cent to the annual cost. On the 30th of Jnne last there wrre in service 406 route agents, at a Cuc.peasation of $310,000 : 45 local agents, at 528,48s, and 1,335 mail messengers, at $160,425— making a total of $499,813. Thin amount with the increased cast of service, commenc ing 1st of July, under new contracts ($130,s 044} added to the cost of service as in opc-a tion on the 10th of June las*, ($6,622,046.) makes the lota! amount for the current year, $7 241 903 This ii independent of the cost of-ocean mail service There should also be added the estimated. cost of improvements mode sioee 1st of July but, including the Son Antonio and Son Diego route, $637,- S25. The net expenditure of the fiscal year ecd- ing Jane 30, ioelodinz payment to letter ea-rier* and foreign postage*, amounted to $11.507,67016. The grot* revenue for the year 1857 in- eluding receipts from letter carriers ami from foreign poeta.es, amonr.tvd to 88,053,- 951 74, being $3,453,718 40 les than the expenditure. The animated expenditures for the year 1858 amount to $12,053,243. The means applicable to defray this sum amounts only to S10.584 074, leaving $1,469 173 to be appropriated from the treasury to de fray the eipenditures of the year 1S58, a* they have been authorized by law. The report again brings under ihe not ce of Congress the expediency of adopting* a money order system like that "f Great Bri tain. The amount transmitted in this way through the British Poet Offices ia the year 1-56 is stated to have been £11.-95,562, furnishing a profitable source of revenue to the Eoglisb Post Office. The ocean Steamships ood foreign mail arrangements of the department may be thus briefly summarised— Tin connection with the Pacific service, tnc only recommendation made by the report is that having reference to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. By i'3 terms the contact with this company for semi monthly service from Astroria. by San Francisco, Ac to Panama, expires oo the 1st of (Xtober l -oo, while under the decision or the Nut Department, the contract of connecting lines oo this side runs until 1st October, 1859.— Therefore, to keep up the connection with tha Pacific line, as provided by law, add a* originally contemplated, it will be necessary DTexteml the contract on the Pacific one year and as the Pacific Mail Steamship Company have performed their ter vice- genera, ly in ii highly creditable and satisfactory m.imer the Post Master General recommend - an ap propriation fur auch extension.
