ATLANTA, DECEMBER 23, 1857
[COMMUNICXTED.]
To this American* of Fulton County.
Your party "failing to make nominations’
for tha election of County Officers, to como
off on tho first Monday in January next, it
bahoayea you to make tho inquiry, for
whom will you east your voles upon Ihnt
day! There are two sets of candidates in
the field—one the regularly nominated can
didates 6f the Democratic party, who hare
boon selected and put forward as the choice
of tfitir party. The other s forced sot, who
hare put themielrea forward upon you
nolens miens. While there was ample time
for a nomination—tor fear of being cut out
by others more worthy than themselves—
they announced themselves as candidates,
and thereby debarred the claims of good
and true men of your party, who are justly
entiled to a consideration in your nomina
tions! and who demanded that considcras
lion of yout I will press the question
home upon you. Why did not the American
party of Fulton county hold a nomination
for County Officers! Was it that you
thought by not nominating yon could steal
Democratic votes and gain strength! No!
You will not acknowledge that. For, if
that was yonr aim, you are oertain to lose
by it, inasmuch as the moment you an
nounced yourselves as independent candid
ate*, all party obligation* were then thrown
off. Why theo, I aak, did you not nomin
ate! The fact has leaked out that some of
the old Officers would not submit to a
nomination. Said ’that if a nomination
was held and they not nominated, they
would ran any how!’ Accordingly they
tnnounced themselves as candidates and
thereby /breed themselves npon you. Will
you support them! Jfany of you true to
one of yeur most noble principles, "Let
the efficejseok the man, and not the man the
office,” will not support them, but will
east your votes for tho Domooratio nomin
ees, and thereby aid in effecting a change
in county officers, in spite of the present
Ineunityent*, who so nicely chiseled you
In oppdeing n nomination.

By the arrival of the mall from the South

the following important news from the In
of their respective companies soon
1 themselves to Capt. Gooe, who, in
command of the whole began travel on the
trail In our nest.
After following the trail to me 4 or S days
through mud and water, they beard the In
dians neatingrice. It becoming now Impos
sible to oontrol the men, 'the hot blood cour
sing their veins, 1 at the recollection of tbeir
savage deeds, Captain Oone ordered a gen
eral charge himself in company with the
gallant. Dr. Hilton ones lea—on they
rushedlantil within, twenty paces of their wig
wams, when they were discovered by tha
squaws who gave tha alarm with deafening
yells, At that tins two of the warriors
were trying to eweape. Lieut. Stephens,
with his unerring aim, caused them to ‘kiss
the soil’so dearly loved. The remaining 19
were cully captured. The prisoner* were
then ordered to inarch under a Strang guard,
when a number of warriors began firing on
the rear; then Dr, Hilton Jones charged
book on them, which made them ehow how
nimble they were in their limb*.
Tho warriors continued in pursuit and
occasionally firing, bat doing no damage
save injuring n pumpkin which one of the
boy* had on bis back to roast for dinner,
and in that only mado two holes, the ball
landing safe nnder’his shirt* The warriors,
anxious for revenge, proceeded near their
encampment, found 38 of their horses gra
zing, and succeeded in capturing and cut-
tingjtheir throats. This party of warriors
was no doubt commanded by (Jen. Bowlegs
in person, as his likeness and fall regalia
were a portion of the trophies obtained.
It is now late at night Express just ar

in this action. The Indian warrior who

when a ball from the rifle of John Wilkerson
changed his tun* and he fell a lifeless corpse
on his native soil. I am now preparing to
receive the wounded who are now coining in
a small schooner. 1 learn with much regret
that Henry O’Neill is shot through the
lung and his recovery doubtfol. It may be
neoessary to state that the above was a de
tachment of Col. Rogers command.
I should like to give you a more full ac
count, but time ie abort end the Steamer

more minute account of the prospects of the
war closing in my next. I leave here at ear

the wounded admit of my doing so. The
men are all in hijgh spirits, anxious for an
