“ERUOK CEASES TO BE DANGEROUS WHEN REASON IS LEFT FREE TO COMBAT IT.”—Jefferson.
VOL. XIV.
ATLANTA. GEORGIA, FRIDAY. OCTOBER 16. 1868.
NO. 217.
(■riMTBl Ifowcll Cobb.
Iruoa oub tract ax. cokskbpondent.]
Athens, Tuesday NionT, Oct. 13, 1868.
All is gloom and sorrow hero. One more elo
quent tongue has ceased to speak; one more
great mind has ceased to think; one more proud
heart has ceased to beat ; one more noble Geor
gian is gone Irom our midst forever. Sleep, our
own Cobb, sleep! The base calumnies of base
rnen cannot tarnish thy fame. May tby spirit
mingle with those of the great and good men
who have gone Itefore it. Tell them, oh ! tell
them, the sad story of our misery. Tell them,
with thy own fiery eloquence, how fallen we are.
Tell them that the blackguard, the mendicant,
and the stranger, fill the high places which not
even they, with all their genius, were too good
to occupy. Tell them that we have no law now
but the bayonet and the prison. Tell those loved
heroes w'ho fought and died for freedom that
they, alas ! have fought and died in vain and
having wept over the fate of your unfortunate
posterity, ask them to mingle their prayers with
yours before the throne of the Most High—be
seeching Him to look down upon us with pity,
and to free us from the terrible doom which is
now upon us. Tell the immortal Washington
that his wisdom and his couusels are despised in
the land he freed and loved so well. Tell Madi
son that the glorious Constitution, which he had
so large a share in framing, is no longer known
here; aod tell Henry that his burning appeals
for freedom are laughed and sneered at.
Tell the hero of New Orleans that he
was a fool; and if thou, by any accident,
shouldst meet with the once despised and de
graded Arnold, tell him that he is our god to
day. Tell him that his memory is held sacred
in the land of Columbus, and that it is only per
fidy and treachery such as his that is respected
or admired by the degenerate offspring of a once
free and valiant people. Great and good men
plead for us belorc the judgment seat, for wc are
helpless, and our affliction is great indeed. Our
tears shall wash away the slanders of the infa
mous, and thy fame and thy patriotism shall
outlive them all, and thy memory shall forever
he “green in our souls.” Ah ! well might we
say, in the language of the poet,
The awful shadow ol a great man's death
Fa lie on this land so aid and durk before;
for never was there a time when thy sage coun
sels, and thy eloquence, and thy truth were so
much needed in I by native btate.
The above ebullition may appear to many as
rather of the bombastic order, but I must assure
you that it would be impossible for any man
with even ahulf a soul to visit this town, which
was the scene of ths eat !y labors of General
CobW*iiftf*aHd witness the expression of de-
risiblc in every countenance^
passing himself in his feeling andlj
>t soul which are awakened under
stances.
A dispatch was received 'here to-night to the rt iuvl! i orate6 * tli e Roots of the Hair

—General Toombs and jllon.* A. H. jpcpl^is.
Dr. Lipscomb, of this place,’will, it is sopp™d,
deliver the luncral oration, which I intend to
rcnortJfti'frqfra. The fufleral will, without doubt.,
be the fittest ej^rr witnessed here. Wby should
not Atlanta sc^j! a delegation? Why should
not every towdAnd city aud village in the State
do sc ? Have we become so demoralized by op
pression as to be insensible to the claims of our
nobitji and our best men upon our affection ?
Forbid it Heaven, for then, aud not till then, are
we hopelessly aud irretrievably lost.
It is a lemarkahlc fact that Gen. Cobb’s death
took place, if uot on the very day of his birth,
at least in a day or two of it. He was born in
in Jefferson couutv, on about the 9th of October,
1816, and was at the time of his death fitty-three
years ol age. More after the luneraL Mac.
The Georgia Air Line Kuliroad.
The importance of this great improvement,
says the Richmond Enquirer & Examiner, is
attracting great attention among the people ol
Virginia, and they are beginning to regard it as
the most promising of all the internal improve
ments proposed for the development of the
South. It will be inteiesting to give some ot
the statistics of the work. The length of the
entire line from Atlanta to Charlotte is about
miles. Ol this, about 10"> miles are in Geor
gia, about 95 iu South Carolina, and the remain
der in North Carolina. The grading was com
menced at Atlanta before the war, aud some
twenty or thirty miles have been graded
from that point eastward. The present
organization, to which the franchises,
rights and property belong, consists ol
two companies—the one chartered by the Leg
islature of Georgia, and the other by the Legis
latures of North and South Carolina. A. S. Bu
ford, Esq., is the President of both companies,
aud the directors arc composed ol some of the
most sagacious and public spirited men in the
whole country. Virginia is represented in the
directory by Major W. T. Sutherlin, of Danville,
whose name is synonym of sagacity and success.
it is proposed to consolidate the two com
panies at present existing, and a general meet
ing ol the stockholders is to be held at Atlanta
on the 4th November for that purpose, and to
complete arrangements for putting the whole
line immediately under contract to be completed
at the earliest day possible.
Rates of Taxation in 1880 and ISOS.—Di
rector Delniar, ot the Bureau of Statistics, is pre
paring a very interesting table showing the rate
ot taxation iu the Uuited States in 1860 com
pared with iu 1868. The following are some ot
the statements contained in the table, given in
ronud numbers. The statistics, when published,
will give the exact figures:
In 1860 the aggregate amount ol federal tax
paid by the people ot the United States was $56,-
000,000; the amount of State tax was $24,000.-
900, and the amount ot county, town, special
aud other taxes was about $54,000,000, making
a total of $134,000,000, or about $4.32 for each
man, woman aud child. In 1S6S the amount ol
federal tax was $500 000,000; the amount of
Btate tax was $75,000,000, and the amount ol
county, town, special and other taxes was about
$276,000,000, mak ing a total of $851,000,000, or
$23 lor man, woman aud child in the United
States.
The failure ol the lruit crop in the Middle
Stales has largely reduced the usual demand for
sugar.
