ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
Tuesday Morning. Dec. 22, 1808.
Gi.knn, Wiuqht & Carul—This is one of the
first houses in our city—one of the first in the
ningnfttide of its several warehouses, its several
business departments, as it is one of the first in
the extent oi its business, its reliability, and its
responsibility. There are few such commission
houses in the South; none for the locality it
occupies, its capacity for a commission business,
the enterprise ol the firm, and its business quali
fications »n our city. We do not design to draw
invidious comparisons between this aud any oth
er ot the large commission houses in this city,
aud icould not under any circumstances. We
only desire to pay a merited tribute to one of the
largest commission and business houses in/our
city, which on no oocasion has failed to promote
the interests of our city, and which all must ac
knowledge has done much to advance her every
interest. At the close of the war, when Atlanta
was just beginning to emerge from its ashes, and
capital was displaying great caution in her re
construction, this firm, with their capital
hand, was foremost in doing so, by constructing
the magnificent warehouses it now occupies, and
in which it is doing so prosperous a business.
As cotton tactors, none is more reliable: as stor
ago and commission merchants, doing business
under their own extensive roof, none can oflord
greater lacilities ; as a great depot lor produce
of all kinds aud provisions—corn, oats, wheat
flour, bacon, lard, salt, &c.—as well as for all
ariiclcs of merchandise, agricultural implements
aud so forth, none other can excel, and lew in
the South can approach it. Business men visit
ing our city will appreciate this notice, if they
will call and see tiie extensive warcrooras of
Glenn, Wkioht & Carr and form their ac
quatntance. Weliayefelt it due for some time
past to pay a merited tribute to the enterprise
and business capacity of this firm, aud iu dorng
it. now, have only done what we feel confident
every leading business bouse in our city will en
dorse.
Nkw and Fasuionablb Silver Plated
Wake, Jewelry, &c. — Ho, for Christmas
Surely Kris Kriugle is in town; or surely the
kind-hearted, hoary-headed, old gentleman
known the wide world all over as Santa Claus
is about to make his advent in Atlanta. Such a
stir upon the streets; such an opening of new
goods inside the stores of Whitehall and Peach
tree, aud everywhere else, we have not seen for
many a day, as we saw on yesterday. The only
one, however, that we were invited to enter was
that of Sharp’s, whose blazing diamonds, glit
tering pins and rings, and silver and silver plated
ware, attracted the eyes of all the passers-by,
and, as we can bear witness, during our short
stay there, put many a dollar into his till.
Sharp, we can tell the reader, has just received
a now Christmas stock, which he will open to
day. This new addition to what he had on
hand makes his stock one o( the most splendid
and varied in the city. Especially is his silver
aud silver plated ware a rare attraction. The
wine stands, castors, and waiters, are all superb
Don’t forget, ladies aud gentlemen, as you pass
Whitehall street to-day, or during this Christmas
week, to give Sharp's Jewelry Establish
ment a call. It will pay if you don’t buy a dol
lar’s worth, and pay better if you do. In either
event, George is a polite gentleman, and will
l*o pleased to see j'ou. He is loo, an advertising
man, and that proves his liberality as well as
enterprise. Give him a call!
The Varieties.—Tlie entertainments at this
place ol amusement are beeoming nightly more
popular. New attractions appear to be the
policy of the management, aud they pay well.
Novelty and variety, it is said, is “the spice of
life”; they are also the life ol the stage. At
present, the beautiful and graceful Mudamoisells
Josephine, from the Western boards—gracetul in
the dauce, and sweet in song—is the latest novel
attraction. It the reader delights iu tcrpsicho-
roan graces or in song, he can wituess the one
and listen to the - other by spending a couple of
hours at the “Varieties” on each night, save one,
of the week. Besides, in the other entertain
ments, he will.not be disappointed. Let him
try it, and be his own judge !
The Oglethorpe County Robbery—Recov
ery of a Large Portion of the MiSNlng
honey, and Capture of the Tbteves.
Ou the <Jth instant the house of Mr. Jesse
Dalton, iu Oglethorpe oounly, Georgia, was
robbed ol $10,000 iu gold, United States cur
rency, and bank notes. The following are the
p irliculurs :
A young man by the name of William Simp-
sou, who resides near this city, had been at the
house of Mr. Daltou lrequeutiy in the past five
or six weeks, and by some means discovered
that Mr. Dalton had a considerable amount of
money in a small desk, which sat on a table in
the room mljoiuiug the one occupied by Mr and
Mis. Dalton as a sleeping room. After getting
tiie exact location ol all things inside the house,
Simpson lell that place and came to Atlanta. At
this place he uiet with a cousin by the name of
Thomas Weaver. Simpson iufoimed Weaver
w hui discoveries he (Simpson) had made, and
prevailed on Weaver to go down with him after
the money. Weaver went, aud upon his arrival
at Mr. Dalton’s passed himself of! as a traveler,
and obtained permission to stay all night. At
the usual hour the family and Weaver retired.
Weaver occupied a room in the back part of the
house. Between tea or eleven o’clock Weaver
stole from his bed, passed through the parlor
into Mr. Dalton’s sleeping room, and from thence
iuto the room where the money was, picked up
the desk, passed out through Mr. Dalton’s room
iuto the parlor, and from thence to the road. He
went up the road alaiut a quarter ot a mile,
where lie found Simpson, who bad been waiting
for him. Both ot them then w»nt into a pine
thicket by the roadsidu and broke the box open.
They gathered up a great many of the papers,
and, os well as they could, distinguished them
from the money, which was enclosed iu large ex
press envelopes.
They carried oft a great m iny of the papers,
and (as they report) three ol the envelopes and
the sack ot g ild. The iest was left (as they
report) some in the box, aud the others scattered
on he grouud. Alter wailing a tew days Mr.
Dalton sent tor Capu Johu C. Reid, a lawyer
at Lexington, Ga., and put the case in his hands.
Capt. Reid with the shrewdness characteristic
of himselt questioned certain parties, aud ob
tained information as to who the robbers were
and where they lived. Capt. Reid came Jo
Atlanta last Wednesday evening, and as Lieut
Johnson of the police bad been recommended
to him as being a No. 1 Detective, Capt Reid
iouud Lieut Johnson and beiug acquainted
with Officer Wooding, he (Reid) informed these
two officers what evidence he had concerning
the robber, and all three ol them (Reid, Johnson
and Wooding.) concluded tnnssertain the where
abouts of Sitnpson aud Weaver. In order to
more fully get the information desired, Officer
Wooding with the advice of Capt. Reid and j
Lieut, Johnsop called on a gentleman and ob- |
tained information sufficient to start in search of •
Simpson and Weaver. Capt. Reid and the two
police officers went into the country and found
where the father ot Simpson lived. After getting
to the house, a young man who was acquainted
wiih the family was scat np to inquire if he
could get a hand to do some work lor Col. J.
M. C. Reed. Old Mr. Simpson came to the
door and talked with the young ro m ; iu the
meantime Capt. Reid, Lieut. Johnson, and Offi
cer Wooding stationed themselves near the
house so as to hear w(ja ; whs said, and not living
satisfied with the advances of the yonr.g man
at the door, concluded to go iu themselves and
see what could be discovered. Lieut. Johnson
entered first, and discovered a young man in
bed, and said, “How are you, Bill At this
instant Capt. Raid and Officer Wooding entered,
and Simpson, upon beiug informed what the
matter was, surrendered quietly. Simpson had
$900 in greenbacks aud over $200 in bank notes.
Simpson confessed tbc whole thing; and after
securing him, the party started in search of
Weaver, who was found at home, seven miles
from the city, and with him was found $798 in
greenbacks and $832.50 in g dd. Alter securing
Weaver, the party started for the city, where
they arrived at sunrise. Officer Wooding was
sent down to Oglethorpe county, with Captain
Reid, in charge ol the prisoners. The officer
returned Saturday evening, aud reports that
$4,200 more of the money had been recovered
In the woods where the box was first opened,
and that, in all probability, the rest would be
found, as the box was carried & considerable dis
tance through the woods open. A thorough
search will ha made by Capt. Reid and others,
the prisoners for guides. Simpson and Weaver
deny ever seeing auy of the money except what
was found with them aud a few dollars they had
spent. Lieut. Johnson and Officer Wooding
received an equal proportion of the reward.
None more deserve it.

According to contract, the Christmas Present
was largely circulated abroad—in Madison, Cov
ington, Griffin, Athers, Marietta, and eight or
ten other towns. It was sent to all the newspa
per in the State—many have copied from it
Among the notices lrom a distance, we clip the
following from the Madison Auditor: “ The
‘Christmas. Present, published by the Young
Men’s Library Association of Atlanta, for the
benefit ot that noble institution, is on our table.
* * Full of entertaining reading matter, it
ill prove an acceptable gilt to all who may
chance to obtain one. As an advertising me
dium for our Atlanta friends, it ha3 no
superior, aud wc are pleased to see that many
of the merchants availed themselves of the op
portunity. The publishers have favored us with
one hundred copies lor distribution in Morgan,
and our friends are requested to call at the
Auditor office and supply themselves.”
Wc deeply regret that some of our merchants
complain that they were not given an oppor
tunity to advertise in the Present, and thus were
debarred the pleasure of aiding the Association
in that way. Several have been personally seen
and satisfied that the neglect was partly unavoid
able aud wholly unintentional. We would be
glad to satisfy any others upon this point.
