Three ol the Inmates Parish in the
Flames.
The State Lunatic Atylnm at Lincoln, Neb.,
was totally destroyed by fire on Monday morn
ing, the 17 h instant, and three of the unfortu
nate imrelm were burned np in tbe building.
The scene must have been a terrible one. A
correspondent of tbe Omaba Herald, says;
” Dr. Larsh and bi< asriitanla had got the most
ot tbe inmates out before the crowd arrivej,
but tbe insane people would keep gening away,
and would rush back into the burning building.
By hard work the Doctor and his people kept
tbem book and saved them until the citizens
commenced arriving to help him. Up to this
hour there are three of the Inmates mining,
only one nt whom they know is burned. Hu
name Is Keeler. He is the man who killed his
ke* per while in the asylum in I ,w* He was
chained to the fioor and could not be got out.
There were also two w hose names we could not
ham 7’bey were all brought into town, and
are now st the Slate Hou<e, being cared tor,
and are dome wed. The Are caugbl in the top
floor oi tbe building, in tbe North wing, near
the same apotoit was set ou fire before, and Dr.
Larsb says that be thinks that it was set on fire
this time. Another report is that that one ol
tbe inmates, in one of tbe rooms on the fonrth
floor, set bit be i on fire, tint up to this time is
bard to tell bow it happened.
Some think that the insane man who was
brought here Irom Nebraska City about two
weeks ago, and who bad been setting so many
buildings on Sri, set this on Are. When tbe
watchman first discovered tbe fire he Bays if he
bad had any means ot patting it out be could
have done so with very little trouble, but there
wai not a bnec or water convenience oi any
kind in the building, aud tbe water bad to tie
carried abont 200 yards in pall* There is noth-
iog now remaining ol (be txnuilful stone struo-
tnre exc°pt the north 'wail, which stands as a
grim guardian over the rum* There Was very
littie saved. Wh n the fire was first discovered
trom ti e city it was breaking through the root
and windows ol tbe north wtng of tbe building.
There was quite a rlifl breeze blowing Irom the
southwest at tbe time, wh.cb made the fire burn
very rapidly. The building and contents were
valued at a! out 720 J 000 and are insured In
Eastern companies tor $100,000 as follows, viz :
Ptcenix, of Brooklyn, $15.000. Underwriters,
of New York. $55,000 ; Lorlllaid, ot New York,

The invesug ition as to tbe extent of the de
falcation ot tbe late Pension Agent, General
Lawrence, ‘8 sti I going on at the Pension Of
fice, and each day’s investigation adds to the
amount ol the deficiency. Many pension checks
have been re’urned to the Pension Office, pay
ment on lh< m having been refused at tbe sub-
Treaeury because no lands bad been tbere pro
vided lo meet ihem. O: course the holders ot
the checks will bo reimbursed by tbe govern
ment, which will be the only sufferer by tho
di.-honesty of its agent. Mr. Doty, tbe present
agent, said yesterday that it was impossible a:
nesent to ascertain the lull amount oi the de-
alcation, and it would not be tally known
before the m dale ot the present week; but he
did not think it wou’d exceed $50,000 In ail.
Other offleia’s, however, say that the amount ol
the deficit ibus far known exceeds that amount,
and will probably reach $100,000 wben all is
known. The friends of the defaulting agent
were taken completely by surprise when the
fict ot dishonesty became apparent, they hav
ing bad unbounded confidence iu his integrity.
When the flret Intelligence of his guilt was
given to them in the columns ol tbe World
some lime ago, they utterly refused to believe it,
and pronounced it a slender ot some enemy ol

fact that the information given was not only to
