HE EVER KNEW
Detective Burns So Speaks of
the Phagan Murder. Says In
vestigation is Growing Easier
Atlanta, Oa.—“The slayer of Mary
I'hagan was a criminal of rank type.
The murder was a product of a brain
steeped in the vermin of crime. It
was the most hideous horror of a cen
tum. I have never come in contact
With a tragedy so foul.”
This assertion was made by Detec
tive William J. Hums Thursday af
ternoon to reporters who talked with
him in the office of Attorney Leonard
J. Haas, to which the noted sleuth had
repaired for a brief respite from his
vigorous activities (luring the fore
noon.
"Furthermore, I see my way per
fectly clear to point my finger at the
guilty man. It Is a simple matter. My
investigation has been an easy one,
and is growing easier as It progresses.
It has merely meant the following of
the trend of tho criminal mind. This
process, to a man of my long experi
ence with criminals, is no difficult
matter.
"Throughout this murder there can
plainly be seen the thread of the crim
inal's mental process. It is certainly a
simple thing to detect. Simple, I mean,
in a sane and normal Investigation aft
er the hysterics that always follow
such a crime have died away."
Work of aCrims-Salurated Mind.
"An analytical probe of this mur
der," Hums told the reporters, "will
unquestionably reveal the criminal
state of mind that impelled It. In all
its various phases, the stamp of a
crime-saturated mentality Is Indelibly
show n. Ft wer cases upon which I
have worked manifested more obvious
ly the erlminal turn of mind of tho
perpetrator."
Hums discussed this feature of his
Investigation nt length, hut would go
no further Into details, lie stated that
he Imd met no obstacles in the course
of his Investigation, and that, thus far.
he had met the fullest co-operation
with everyone whom he sought for
aid.
"And I can say this much." he de
clared; "t am perfectly satisfied with
results. I ntn utterly confident of suc
cess, and there Is positively no doubt
In my mind that I will soon be able
to point conclusively at the slayer of
Mary I’hagHn."
After which he added this Interest
ing statement:
"The detection of the murderer of
that little girl Is a matter so simple
that, really, there was no use at all in
bringing me to Atlanta to work upon it.
"It Is so obvious that when It finally
Is revealed to the public none of my
men nor I will deserve one whit of
credit for having solved the mystery.
As I said before, It is purely a matter
of tracing tho course of a criminal
mind."

AT SACREB HEART
Father McCreary Spoke Last
Night. Rev. A. Biever Will
Speak Tonight.
The Sacred Heart church was packed
last night to hear the powerful dis
course of Rev. Father Mct'reury on
"The Confessional." The claims of the
church to forgive sin as Christ's repre
sentative were set forth with a wealth
of Scripture argument and historical
illustration that held the mighty auill
enee In closest attention. Even those
not of the Catholic faith could hardly
help wondering at the copious and co-
Kent proofs that fairly electrified tinder
the touch of the preacher's superb
oratory.
That the missionaries' work is nmk
itiK for the moral and religious uplift
of the parish Is witnessed by the fact
that every morning's service of the
whole week has been largely attended.
The Rev. A. Biever will speak to
night. The subject Is another one that
appeals widely to all classes: "The
Real Presence of Jesus Christ on the
Altars of the church," anti It Is said
to he the masterpiece of this charm
ing speaker.
The Sunday Lid Will
Be Lifted in Waycross
Waycross, Ga. —There ia every indi
cation here now that tin- Sunday lid
Is going to lie pried off Suuday and
will bo kept off thereafter.
One druggist will sell soft drinks,
in addition to cigars, tobacco, news
papers. candies and magazines, which
have been on sale on Sundaes in Way
cross for \ears. The soft drink issue
is one that has caused a great amount
of discussion in the city, and while it
is not controlled by the clt' govern
ment, the attitude of council on the
question has always had some effect
on what was done by the druggists.
Mayor Heaton states that if the law
against selling tilings on Sunday is to
be enforced, it should be enforced
without regard to persons or articles
Me believes If nothing more than soft
drinks are sold on Sunday, no more
harm wilt be done than in the sale oi
cigars and newspapeds "IT the peo
pie don't want anything sold, and
want the lid on tight, I'll see If coun
cil wont discuss the matter at an
early date and adopt some kind of or
dinance giving Waycross a ltd on Sun
days." ho said. "But from what l
hear, the people don't mind the sale
oT cigars, soft drinks, newspapers nnd
the like, and 1 see no reason why
they should be prohibited from get
ting tbs things."

digging of the scalp wilt stop, and your
