Seize Pontoons.
As watt expected the Germans at
tempted to cross the Vistula In an
endeavor to outflank the Russians,
hut this was frustrated by the Rus

pontoon bridges.
Despite the desperate work facing
them in North Poland the Russians
continue operations In Hast Prussia

Gallcln they are taking positions along
the Dounalrtz River in an attempt to
stop the flow of the Austra-Uerman

ed tlie allies from following up their
advantage.
Rlmllar tactics are heing adopted by
both sides along the rest of the front
with gains and losses which are
marked In fractions of miles. Tho
allies have brought up an enormous
weight of artillery which they are
using to clear the way for the in
fantry.
A message from Antwerp to the
Amsterdam Teiegraff asserts that the
Germans, preparing for a possible re
tirement, are constructing a line of
defense across Belgium from the
Scheldt, along the llendre River, to
Mauheiige, on the French frontier.
This, if true, might he considered only
a measure of precaution.
Large Mine Field.
The German cruisers which raided
tlie cast coast of Kngl.md sowed a
large mine field. In addition to the
