WOMEN’S FACES
Altered By Smoking, Says
Gynecologist
VIENNA. Women who are
heavy smokers lose their fair com
plexion much more quickly than
non-smoking women in the opinion
of Dr. R. Hofstatter, noted Vien
nese gynecologist, who has writ
ten a book entitled "The Smoking
Woman.”
The feature of smoking women,
he contends are usually much
sharper than those of non-smokers.
The more women smoke, the
sharper the nose and chin are out
lined and the skin becomes very
taut.
The lips, says Dr. Hofstatter,
lose their rosy natural color and
become pale, while the corners of
the lips show wrinkles prematurely
and there is a tendency for the
lower lip of a female smoke ad
dict to project further than the
upper lip. Through this gradual
change the features of the smok
ing woman become more and more
masculine. Dr. Hofstatter claims
to have observed that heavy fe
male smokers have a pronounced
growth of beard.
The eye of strong female smok
ers undergoes a change, says Dr.
Hofstatter. The lid rises and falls
much more slowly. There is a ten
dency to stare. Some women even
become cross-eyed as they smoko.
Among the women who smoke
heavest are teachers, students, fe
male physicians, actresses, artists,
and piano virtuosos.
AMERICAN DEVICE
Will Help Japanese Forecast
Tremors'
TOKlO.—Japan, more severely
mauled by earthquakes than any
other land, plans to turn to In
earnest to study the tremors,
means of forcasting them, and
methods for mitigating their dis
astrous effects.
Plans and estimates for a system
of seimological research stations,
to be placed in nine separate dis
tricts particularly affected by the
earthquakes, will be laid before the
Imperial diet when it convenes
next December.
Dr. Imamura, head of the seismo.
logical department 'of the Univer
sity of Tokio, believes that earth
quakes can be foretold with ac
curacy sufficient to permit pre
cautions that will lessen their ill
effects.. This will be possible
through the equipment of these
nine stations with the most mod
ern seismological instruments. Ev
ery known method will be used to
study formations and movements
of the earth which may precipitate
a disastrous temblor.
The feature of this equipment
will be an American apparatus for
recording movements of the earth
crust, designed by D. A. A. Michel
son, head of the department of
physics of the University of Chi
cago. This consists of two iron
pipes each 502 feet long and 6
inches in diameter, laid across each
other, imbedded in concrete and
iron casing, and filled with oil and
water. The istrument .according
to Dr. Imamura, is so designed
that the movement of the lines
formed by the meeting of the oil
and water in the pipes can be ob
served by means of an arrange
ment of prisms. The theory is
when the lines have shifted to cer
tain positions the early approach
of an earthquake is to be expected.
Dr. Imamura says, however, that
the exact time of the visitation
cannot be foretold. An eight acre
field will be needed for the instal
lation of each station.
FRENCH DETECTIVE
Lands Criminal After Long
Chase
PARIS.—This is the story of a
Paris detective who traveled half
way around the world for his quar
ry, and finally, in the dense jungle
of Annam, threw aside his disguise
and arrested his man, who is now
thre years in Jail.
As related here an antiquary
named Malraux was under the ob
servance of the Paris police, su
spected of being responsible for
some recent thefts from French
museums. It was thought he had
designs on collections of antiques
in one of the French provinces,
and as a matter of routine a de
tective was assigned to trail Mal
raux and a campanion, where ever
they might go.
The pair went to a seaport and
there took passage on a steamer
for Saigon, French Indo-China, and
the detective went along on the
same vessel. He did not even have
time to buy a change of clothing,
but made friends among the crew
and borrowed what he needed.
At Saigon Malraux and his
friend posed as rich travelers,
anxious to see the country, while
the detective sleuthed around In
the background. He had, however
made known his mission to the lo
cal French authorities, and when
Malraux asked for guides to the re
mote districts of Annam, the detec
tive was among the natives assign
ed, but cleverly disguised. The
party scoured the region of Angkor
rich in holy relics and fine speci
mens of old Chinese art, and Mal
raux and his companion bought
freely. Also they did not hesitate
conditions being favorable, to bur
glarize Annamite temples for par
ticularly fine specimens.
The border of Slam was not far
away, and the collectors, having
decided to leave the country by
that route, called up the native
guides and dismissed them. Then
the Paris detective had his day.
The humble .disguise was cast
aside, the French policeman step
ped out, and Malraux and his
friend placed under arrest.
The case was tried at Phom
penh, Cochin-China, and Malraux ■
had no defence. It came out, dur
ing the trial, that his antiques
were destined for a New York
antiquary, and were worth 1,000,000
francs.
