Augusta Shops Vie With Nature
in Showing October’s Splendors'
“The earth nover seems more
beautiful than in October. It is hap
py for it has fulfilled the purpose of
life. Here has nature grown its
great oaks and chestnuts; 'ts hick
ories and maples; its hemlocks so
rugged in their trunks and branches,
so delicate in their foliage and fruit
ing cones. And in the sequestered
solitudes of the forests, how with a
fine caress the sunlight penetrates
the thinning leafafie, and sleeps
therein for the momentary slumber
of the autumn afternoon. The earth
i* a fabric of joy and vital fervor; al
ways the great divine lift is moving
to new things, as now when it is fill
ing with exceeding concinnity tha
mysterious blooms of the witch-hazel,
whose fragrance compels the absorb
ing essence of the season. At the
moment when these lovely wreaths ot
bloom appear, the end of summer
growth is summoned. The asters
are now full of beauty—scores on
scores, hundreds on hundreds; thou
sands on thousands, they fill the
countryside, and they are the glories
of the fall. The goldenrod, which
began before the asters, do not quit*,
keep up with their manifestations, for
they are withering, as the roses be
fore them, and the multitude of sum
mer. We must be happy with what
we have, and nature is ripe with in
Unity. For just as we have known
these essential ornaments of the
earth, so we shall know them next
year, and so long as we live. EJvqn
man cannot destroy utterly.”
So signs the poet who is the mas
ter of prose. But we would have
poets to also acclaim the glories of
what man has done in imitation of
what is so superbly accomplished by
nature at this thrlced-blessed season,
and has done so especially well for
the Augusta shops.
M'Elwee and Thomas.
This new firm has adopted nature’s
glowing coloring for the October pic
ture for its own key-note in the, de
velopment of harmonious effects in

have is bright and fresh and new and
most marvelously attractive. The

TRAIN MED
B 1 TRESTLE Flit
The outgoing Augusta Southern
railroad passenger train was delayed
Wednesday afternoon at the Spirit
''reek trestle by a fire that would in
nil have destroyed the
entire wood work of the structure but
lor the timely arrival of the crew.
"Engineer Rennie saw upon round
ing the curve just north of the bridge
that the swamp was almost totally
enveloped in a thick cloud ot smoke.
He slowed down and sen' a flagman
ahftad. When the fire was discov
ered all hands set to work with
buckets, and the blaze was soon ex
tinguished.
This is the second fir» discovered
on the Spirit Creek trestle Last
year about this time almost the same
thing- occurred One afternoon in
the early tali the engineer saw smoke
ahead on the down run and slowed
up. to find the wood work ablaze
Since the mill-pond at the old Rich

swamp, being extremely fertile,
yields each year an immense crop of
tall grass, that is inflanialile when
dry, and frequently catch's fire from
tailing sparks on clearing fires.

R. L. Hunter.
The high reputation R. L. Hunter's
beautiful dry goods have always en
joyed is being most admirably su»
tained for this season when the
stock outshines in brilllnacy anything
Hunter has yet parried. The ready

The Andrews Brothers Dry Goode Co.
It is said that what is well bought
is half sold, and of no dry goods firm
in Augusta can this truism be ut
tered more appropriately than 'ln
speaking of the Andrews Brothers
Dry Goods company. This firm will
never have an old stock to carry
over, for the very excellent reason
that everything is chosen with a sure
knowledge of values and with a full
recognition of the peculiar wants of
the Augusta public.
