THE HOME HUSTLER-COMMERCIAL
Mr. and Mrs Briley moved
from Atlanta to Flovilla, Ga.,
where Mrs. Briley conducted the
Briley house and Mr. Briley held
a cintract with a rai road. The
Brily house was known to a 1
traveling mt n in Georgia and was
one of the most popular hotels in
that section of the state.
Mr Briley gave up his construc
tion work tn account of the
feebkss of old age and came to
Atlanta, wheie he established the
little store at the cornel of Hum
phries and Liberty streets. For
four years they lived happily at
this place until ruthlessly mur
dered Saturday night. They are
ar id to have been the most peace
ful people in the neighborhood
and were known to have no en
emies. Mr. Briley was sixty-two |
years of "ge and his wife was
about ten years his junior.
An intimate fr.end of the old
couple said yesterday that they
had begun to grow somewhat
childish and confided in any
one win. chanced to come along
If they had any money it i»
probable they told some of the
frequenters of the store of its
existence and thus spread the
report that a robber could get in
good work at their residence.
It is also Slid they allowed
negroes to rt-main about the
place more than was prudent and
this is thought to account for,
tragedy. Th° couple were good
h arted old people a id evidently
saw no harm in allowing the
negroes tn come about the place.
MAJOR R. T. FOUCHE
• —— —'
Has Announced as a Candidate
for State Senate.
In yesterday’s edition of the
Hustler-Commercial, there ap
peared the announcemeet of the
candidacy of Major R.T. Fouche,
who has entered the race for the
state senate, to represent the
42nd senatorial district in that
august body.
M jor Fouche is too well
known in this city for a Hustler-
Commercial man to undertake
to introduce him to the people
of one of the richest and best
counties in the state.
As a young man, he was al
ready at the front, lighting for
home and country, when the
young men of this generation
were in swaddling clothes, or
were yet unborn.
lie has always and at all times
proven to the world that he was
a true man. Time and again he
has, by favor of the people, held
offices of trust and today he en
joys a most enviable record.
Brave, generous, able and loy
al, Bob Fouche is too well bal
anced and too modest withal to
ever ask for an office that he
can not fill and fill in such a
way as will reflect credit upon
himself and honor upon his con
stituency.

ROME GEORGIA, MONDAY EVENING, MARCH 2S. ISYS.
THE REPORT FILED.
The Coilrl of Inqiliry Heard
From.
THE BLAME NOT FIXED.
All Agree That Destruction
Game From Outside-
Washington, I). C., March 28.
—Tne finding of the court of in
quiry, appointed to investigate
the destruction of the Maine, has
been filed and is as follows:
The court finds that at the
time of the explosion the battle
ship Maine was lying in live and
one-half to six fathoms of water.
The discipline aboard the ship
was excellent; everything stow
ed according to orders—ammu
nition , guns, stores, etc. r lhe
temperature of the magazines at
8 p. m. were normal, except in
the after ten inch magazine, and
that did not explode.
The explosion occurred at
9 :4Q o’clock on the evening of
February 15th. There were two
explosions with a very short in
terval between-them. The ship
lifted on the first explosion.
Tne court can form no definite
opinion of the condition of the
wreck from the divers’evidence.
Technical details of wreckage
from which the court deduces
that a mine was exploded under
the ship on the port side.
The explosion was due to no
fault of those onboard.
Opinion of the court stating
that the explosion of the mine
caused the explosion of two
magazines.
The court declares that it can
not find evidence to fix the re
sponsibility.
The report is unanimous and
is signed by all the members of
the court. It does not refer to
the existence or non-existence of
the mines in the harbor of Ha
vana except to the specific find
ing that a mine was exploded
under the ship and the opinion
that the explosion ot the two
magazines was caused by the
explosion of a mine.
The report as a whole is a for
mal, dispassionate recital of
facts and bears the stamp of that
strict officialism which marks
naval procedure - It is brief, not
exceeding 1,809 words, and
among the eight parts goes to
the greatest length under the I
second heading which deals with
the discipline and. order of the |
siiip. 'This the court specifies
with extreme minuteness, the
least detail of the satisfactory
condition ofeverythmgou board
being given. '
The normal temperaturu of
the large forward magazines at
8 o’lcock —only an hour and
forty minutes before explosion
disposes of the question of acci
dental combustion within the
magazines.
The finding that the ship lifted
on the first explosion indicates
an external source, and one of
tremendous power to be able to
lift a battleship of thousands of
tons.
