which their national vices had betrayed them. While that obstinate perseverance fails to unite the American people in a common re ,. . . it i sent merit, and win e there arc voices sftb ; raised to plead moderation and forbearance low'ards tliern, they will persevere, Ir is irn- j possible that they can over be aroused to the j suspicion that iheir conduct has been re prehensible, while editorials and speeches emanating from the press and from the legis- ; lators of this country, are published among ! them, which while saying one word against Mexican perfidy and cruelty, will say ten •words against American ambition and injus tice. We believe that the only policy to be advocated by us is to press the American arras on without compromise—without piuso, i until Mexico is conquered, or she sues for j peace. It will be in the latter alterna- ! live that then, and not till then, that Mr. | Toombs’ philanthropy and magnanimity will j find a titling exercise in protecting her, from what he terms “that atrociuus batch of un settled, fraudulent claims, which even an American minister refused to demand, and which he greatly feared had an inconsiderable ■influence in gelling up this war." This lar i insinuation is a gross slander on his country men. How dues it tally with tlie charge ta tl this is the President's war—brought on j Lv him, and in usurpation of the war-making j powers of Congress? Will Mr. Toombs undertake to show a connection the President and these claims, between which tire American minister refused to demand! Put while Mr. Toombs insists on making this war a mere war lor dollars and cents, j and that “the head and front of the uflend- j injf” of Mexico, is that she owes us money, and that there are no wrongs to atone fur except the non-payment of debls due by her, i e is unwilling that this govern, merit should do mure than insist on payment of this debt. He is unwilling that .'lie should be called <»n to pay the expenses ol the war. In the language of Mr. Toombs, who seems especially tond'of stigmatizing the con duct and doings of h s countrymen with the harshest epithets, this debt. “After we shall have swelled the amount by (he last dollar which ihe most grinding Hvance and injustice can have the impudence to demand, it is still bill a debt, and a debt which Mexico could pay: but (the speech goes on to say) if she could not pay it. Mr. T. would not blot from the map of nations a eis»er republic, because she was too poor to pay her debts. We w ere not exactly in the j condition to exact hard terms, to demand e.v. i {reiim penalties for the non-payment of pub- j he d-bt.s. We have too many defaulting sisters in our own confederacy, to demand ‘ihe pound of flesh’ even it n were ju>t fi d by j the law- of na’iuiio—if il were *co nom nated j in the bond.’ ” This deprecation of violence—of force— of harshness towards a nation which !•■*« to i little claim on our tenderness, is MiispiwCed tenderness. Her atrocious crudities—lter bloody crimes ■ gainst our chizens seem to have been sedu lously kept out of view by Mr. Toombs. He seems to have a heart of melting chanty to wards those Mexicans, and no indignation j fur their bud conduct. All his indignation is i turned against his own countrymen, or he is I . * ! fearful perhaps if he dwelt on those scenes o! , outrage which have inspired the deep hatred ‘ of the Americans against these Mexicans, the war, the President’s war though if be*, might not be altogether so unpopular among his constituents. The offences therefore are •oftened down to a mere breach of a civd con tract to pay money. We shall refer to this speech again, to re view the positions assumed in it against the acquisition of Mexican territory. ’l'Sie .Tiuil.i, We received iart evening a pile of papers, but they were very scattering in date-, and at best contained but little news, Such as they brought will be found in our columns this morning. One New York paper of the 1 Slh, the Journal of Commerce, was the only one from that city. Philadelphia papers of ; the 15th and 16lh, and Baltimore of the 15(lq 1 16th, 18th and 19th also came to hand. No j papers from Washington city were received. | The New Orleans papers also failed to | come to hand yesterday. C* The lion. Win. W. Holt has been appointed by the Governor, Judge of the Su perior Courts of the Middle Circuit, vice Judge Gamble resigned. Our new Judge took the oath of office ycsteiday' before the Justices of the Inferior Court of this county. 3J” We would call the attention of mer chants to the cargo sale of Wines, of direct importation, by Messrs. Cohen &. Fosdtck, f to take place in Savannah on the 26? h inst. It is the first sale of the kind we have hid the pleasure of advertising for our sister city. I for many a day, and trust it is but a begin ning of a lucrative business in direct import ing. The Weather . —The Baltimore Patriot in its morning edition of the 19th inst. says— j Yesterday was, perhaps, the most disagreea- ; ble day “of the season.” It commenced i snowing early in the morning, which soon turned to rain and sleet. It continued to In rain all day, with a disagreeable wind 1 blowing lightly from the oast; and what with the snow, the sleet and the wind, it was a j decidedly unplesant day in all re.-pccls. Xaval E>isa»lcr. A letter from the Sandwich Islands re ceived at New York, mentions the loss of the U. S. schooner Shark, at the mouth of the Columbia river, on the same bar where the Peacock perished. The disaster occur red on the 10th of September. The crew ! were all saved, but the vessel was a total I wreck. Tiic Theatre—-Air. IX. IMacidc. We enjoyed the pleasure of seeing this 1 accomplished actor on Wednesday night, in two of his favorite pieces. He appeared as “Cede John,” in the play of that name, and as “Pipes” in the farce called “The Double B *ddeJ Room.” He had a very good house, 1 | ami it would have been crowded but for tne j bad weather. The audience was highly tie- | lighted, and applauded “to the echo.” We | i have never seen a more marked exhibition of j | pleasure. Placide’s acting is certainly “cal- . cabled to give general satisfaction.” The farce of “The Double Bedded Room” reminded ns faintly of a scene in Sterne’s j “sentimental Journey.” It is full of humor | and ludicrous incident, without as much of i double entendre, as would shock the must fasti j dions. Placide was reasonably well supported. Among the entertainments was a Pas 1 Sue/, by Mi ss Homer.
