We are now willing to enter into terras of of pacification.” We hope that the fall of Vera Cruz and the Castle of St. Juan D’Ulloa is to grace our country’s annals before any such policy as Mr. Calhoun’s is seriously entertained. After that we might advocate a temporary suspension of hostilities until Mexico could take a second sober thought on the subject. She i»as not however taken the first yet, so far as the public is definitely informed; though there scerns to have been received at ; Washington some intimation of a willing ness to treat for peace. This country has all along held herself ready and willing to make peace. But un til Mexico declares the same willingness.we arc disposed to cry “Come on McDufi. ’ This country might remain quiescent, in the manner .Mr. Calhoun recommends for j half a centurv, and the Mexicans would | never come any nearer to a pacification titan they are now. Their national obstinacy is proverbial. And the only way to conquer it is to make them feel that war is a scourge, and not a blessing. Stationing pacific troops among them to dance at their fandangoes and to buy their provisions at enormous prices is not the way to conquer a peace. Neither could the border foods to which the war would degenerate, if there be any hos tilities along the proposed line of fortifica tions contribute to that object. Kclirt' foi Ireland. The papers of this country are teeming . with the most lamentable accounts of the Bufferings and destitution of poor afflicted j Ireland. lu our extensive exchange list we , do not now meet with one scarcely but wuat j has a portion of its columns devoted lo this groat, and terrible calamity. Its huge, and horrid proportions come upon tiie mental vision with an awe inspiring effect; and like an immense black cloud threatens an over shadowing gloom over the future. Tuis famine in Ireland is destined to figure on the page of history as one of the direct scourges that ever afflicted humanity. We hope that it is also destined that history shall speak of it, as having elicited the most strik ing and triumphant proofs of the active prin ciples of philanthropy. We hope it will be j recorded that our country was conspicuous < in the work of sympathy and succour, and that our native State and city were not lag- i gards in the noble cause. We call attention to the card of the Com mittee of donations appointed by the Mayor. ; We hope that donations will not be confin ed to money. Many can very conven ently engage to contribute in produce. The mo ney subscribed will probably be converted on j this side of the Atlantic into Corn. This plan will he better, than to send the money, which could not be laid nut to the same ad vantage, at the scene of disaster. Let the churches take up collections also. Many persons of the most charitable hearts, ( hut too poor to contribute much, will thus have an opportunity of contributing their mite, who would withhold their names from a subscription list. Vet however small the gift, be it borne in mind that it is twice bless ed. ‘ - It blesselh him that gives and him that takes,” IS V Ti'lr^iupls. CHARLESTON, Feb. 13.—Cotton.—We left the market at the close of our last publication in a comparatively quiet state. The excitement grow ing out of the accounts brought over by the steam er Hibernia had not only subsided, hut fur two fir three days prior to this date, a certain degree of langor prevailed; and as the week drew to a c!o-e a contention sprang up relative to a reduction in prices; holders, however, maintained the ascen dency. and hence the limited operations of Friday last; but since that period, the scarcity of -hipping and the advance in the rate of freight, together with the pressure of oilier circumstances, have se riously operated against this staple, and transar- j lions have been effected at a decided reduction on the quotations gix'ea in our report of the morning of the 6th inst. On Saturday last, the transactions were confined to some 739 hales, without any de cided change in the general feature-’of the market. There was no improvement in the demand on Mon day, but a strong desire manifested iisclf on tiie part of some factors to sell, and the sales of the day reached 1000 bale- on somewhat easier terms. On Tuesday a .d Wednesday operations were al most entirely suspended—(reaching on tiie former 400, and on the latter day only 190 hales) —in con sequence of the large concession dem mded; but on Thursday holders came to terms, which resulted in ; the sale of 2100 hales at a positive reduction of 4 to if. from the highest point of the market; and up wards of 1000 bales were sold yesterday at similar prices. Tiie market was so unsettled at the close of the week that we find it impossible to give quo tations at present.
