REM A RKB—By our tables published this morn
ing it will he seen that the excess in receipts this
year over last is only 48.312 bales—giving as the
excess in receipts at all tlie ports, for last week,
only 826 bales more than were received during the
corresponding week last year. Os the receipts,
the increase at Savannah, Charleston and Florida,
is 194,514 bales. While the decrease at New Or
leans, Mobile, Virginia anil North Carolina is 150,-
213 bales. As we remarked in a former number,
the general impression seems to he that the high
pri.es paid Tor cotton this season, has forced it for
ward, and that by the middle of M irch the receipts
at the different ports will show a falling off and
continue to do so until the new crop makes its ap
pearance. 'Fiie exports show a falling off to Liv
erpool of 122.917 b les, and to France of 4,201
bales—to other foreign ports the re is an increase of
22.959 bales. To coastwile ports the shipments
this year have been 256,961, against 208,823 hales
last year, showing an inctcase of 48.138 bales.—
The shipments to all quarters exhibit a fallingoff
of 56,021 bales as compared with last year, while
the increase in the tracks held at the different
ports is £8,210 bales.
COTTON—We have a dull and jinsetlk-d week
to notice in our Cotton market since our last re
view. Both buyers and sellers have been anxious
ly awaiting the advices per Baiah Sands, which
came to hand on Saturday evening last, hy tele- 1
graph, but the cotton advices were of so meagre
and unsatisfactory a character that nothing could
be made of them. The mail due oa Sunday, by r
which the foreign letters were expected, failed to
come to hand, but by the arrival of the steamer
Southerner at Charleston, we were put in posses
sion of her accounts in full in tiie New York pa
pers of the 10th. They however, were unsatisfac
tory, and l.ttle or no business was transacted on
Monday, both buyers and sellers seeming disposed
to await the receipt of their letters by Monday’s
mail. On Monday evening they met with smoth
er disappointment, as tiie northern mail again fail
ed, which left our market much in the same state
yesterday as on Monday. There was, however,
yesterday a little more looking about, but buyers
and sellers were too far apart in their views for
transactions to take place—the former demanding
a concession from last week's prices of * a I c which
few or none of the warehouse dealers would ac
cept, and most of them have withdrawn their sara
ples, until the market becomes more settled.—
Some few sales were made out-doors from wagons
and stores, of small lots, at i to Ic. decline from the
prices paid on Wednesday last, biU holders, gen
erally show no disposition to sell at the present mo
ment. The sales this week, as far as they have
been reported to us sum up only 2,314 bales, near
ly all of which was disposed of previous to the re
ceipt of the Sarah Sands’ advices. The particu
lars are as follows ; IS at 9s, 15 at 9i, 42 at 10. 27

cents. In the present unsettled state of the market
we omit quotations as it is impossible to give them
with any thing like accuracy; but we would remark
that buyers appeared to take their stand yesterday
at 105 cents for fair—while holders refused to
exhibit their samples under 11 cents.

Extract of a letter received in this city, dated
LIVERPOOL, Jan. 19th, 1847. —Since ourCir
i cularof-lth inst. by last steamer, the money mar
ket has undergone rather a decided adverse
change, influenced considerably no doubt hy the
increased pressure on the Continent ami money
crisis in France. The Bank of England has ad
vanced its minimum rate of interest I per cent,
but the general rate in the market is more decided
ly higher, with greater stringency in discounts,
; both as to ihe class of paper and the time it may
have to run. It also seems to he generally expect
ed that the Bank will further advance the rate
almost immediately.
We have had a languid cotton market since our
last, the consumers buying on an unusually limit
ed scale; and though the Americrn crop accounts
by the steamer of Ist inst. are considered to be
still more decidedly in favor of holders, prices
have sunk about id per lb. from the highest point,
and even at this reduction it would not he possible
to sell largely. The business for the week ended
15th inst. amounted to 29,250 bales, of which
, 14,000 were taken by speculators and 2000 far ex
-1 port. The American descriptions consisted of 7250
j Upland at 6 a 71, 11710 Orleans at 5} a 9, 4490
Alabama and Mobile at 5} aB, and 240 bea Island
| at 13 a 20id per lb. The sales for three days to
j this evening are estimated at 7500 bales; and tlie
i speculative demand seems for the present snspend
! ed. The value of the belter qualities is affect
i ed than the lower grades, and the limited transac
tions in fair Upland are at about 7d, fair Mobile
7y, and fair Orleans TUI,
The corn markets have undergone some further
advance, the supply still inadequate to the demand.
It being strongly suspected that the Government
i will propose the abolition of the duly on flourand
| grain, bonded flour has been selling freely at 12sa
j 13s per bbl for Western, and as Parliament meets
to-day, it js probable that the decision of the Go
vernment as to the July may go out by this stcam-
I er to-morrow. The flour market has not la:en quite
| so firm the last day or two, and 42s is now about
the top price for Western; Philadelphia 41 a 4ls
6d. American wheat in bond 10s 3J to Ils6d per
I 70 lbs; Indian corn 70s to 72s per quarter, and In
dian corn meal 33s to 34s per bbl. Sour flour, duty
1 paid, 36s to 33s Cd.
1 The quotations at Liverpool on the 4th January
last, were as follows:—for cotton—Upland 51 a
7}d; Orleans 6 a Byd; Mobile 6 a 7UI; Tennessee
and Alabama 5i a 7d; t-'ea Island 10 a 22d.
| MONTGOMERY, Feb’y. 13th.—Cotton.—The

tle or nothing doing. We quote 10 a 10, which
