■he had sown the pure seed of republicanism amongst them. And it would ultimately be a oay of proud exultation for Mexico ttf live ■ in the full enjeyment of republican liberty. Upon the subject of slavery, there should be but one opinion, for it must be acknowl edged by all to be a Constitutional instil u i) And those who are tampering with it, are not only disturbing the peace of the Union, but are undermining the foundation of the government, lor it is not in the constitu tion of man to be forced to sacrifice his in terest without resistance. Although I would rejoice to know that there was not a slave in all the world, yet 1 cannot consent for oth ers to dictate what I must do with my own. I did not intend to be understood that the whole of the Mexican country should be thrown open for the free admission of slave ry. I only mean that so much thereof as may be held as an indemnity should be free for all to occupy, whether slave owners or not. . If I had space I would say more upon the auhject. LATEST dates from MavßEjan. 3i MACON, March 4 — Cotton. —Our market dur ing the past w»*ek has been exceedingly dull, and prices have ranged from Bto 94 cts. The receipts have been very limited averaging about 100 hales a day, and perhaps not half that amount sold daily. SAVANNAH, MARCH 6.— Cotton.— Arrived since the 241 h nit., 5.631 hales Upland, (3.463 per Kail Road.) and 503 bales Sea Islands. The e* ports for same period have been 12,360 hales ( p land and 329 Sea Islands, leavine a stork on band and on shipboard not cleared, of 52,< 50 hales Up -1 and and 2.897 Sea Islands agiin-t *3,225 bales Upland and 2,831 Sea Islands, at same time last year. In our review' of last week we stated that the Up land market has been in a very unsettled ami de pressed state, ami mentioned that the telegraphic accounts per steamer Cambria had been received. The letters, Jiowever, did not come through till Friday night, during which day we did not hear of a single transaction. On Saturday, buyers were generally engaged with their correspondence, not withstanding which about 1,200 hales changed bands. On Monday there was some enquiry, ami the sales summed up about 1,000 bales. On Tues day and Wednesday, there was more activity in the market —the transactions amounting to little less than 3,00 v) hales. Yesterday, owing no doubt, to the very inclement state of the weather, less than 200 hales changed hands. The transactions during the week have been exclusively on English account. The market since Monday has been gradually stiffening, and the sales show an advance of tliere eighths to one-half a cent, over those of the pre vious week. This in part may he attributed to the increase of tonnage and the downward tendency of freights, coupled with the fact that several large holders have withdrawn their stocks from market. The market closes firm. The following quota tions approximate very nearly to the value of the article; —Ordinary 94 a 91; middling 104 a lUJ; raidtiling fair 104; fair to fully fair lUJ a lOj. Round bales of a similar quality are about an } to fe. per pound cheaper. The sales of the. week sum up 5,362 bales, as follows: 13 at 9; 69 at 94; 44 at ‘.'4; 167 at 9 5-16; 65 at 91; 125 at 91; 273 at 91: 101 at 9}; 1,786 at 10; 557 at 10|; 708 at 104; 231 at Os; 895 at 104; 8t at 109-16; 145 at 10|; 62 at iOf; and 37 bales at IOJ per pound. Rice. —The sales this week show no improve ment over last. Holders, however, were yester day demanding an advance of 4 to 4 cent per lb The sales sum up 1.566 casks as follows; 290 at 31; 350 at 31; 87 at 3,81; 554 at 3r; and 375 casks at $4 per 100 pounds. Groceries. —There has been very little doing in Groceries the past week except in a retail way.— 20 hhds Cuba Molasses brought 25 cents per gal lon. We quote Cuba 25 to 26c., and New Orleans 35 to 37 cents per gallon. Sugar continue in good demand. We quote Havana, white, 94 to 10, and New Orleans Bto 94 rents per pound. Rio Coffee remains firm at 84 to 8# cents per pound. Domestic Liquors —ln Domestic Liquor* the on- ly sale we hear of is 30 bhls Gin at 36c per gallon. Domestic Brandy is worth 374 c per gallon; Ne < England Rum 35c; Philadelphia and Baltimore Whisky 3o to 32c; and New Orleans Whisky 23 to 30c per gallon. Salt. — Five cargoes have arrived during the week—a large poncii us w inch h is been disposed of as follows: 1300 brish-ds ar 7c and 6009 do at U4cper bush; 6500 sacks at COc per sack; 3UJ do at 92c, and 400 do at 95r. Flour —A lot of 30 bhls Georgia Flour brought $6.50 per bhl. We quote 1 anal 8 to 8 50; B.ilii more Howard-st. 7,2a to 7,50; Country 6.5 J to 7 per bhl. Corn. —We hear of sales of upwards of 3000 bushels at prices ranging from 874 to 90c per bush. Retails from 90 to 95c per hush. Hoy —Sales of 200 bundles Northern at 874 c per 100 H»s; 50 do in lots brought $1 per 100 lbs. Exchange. —We note a slight decline in Ster ling since our last, and now quo!; 4 to 44 per cent Banks check on the North at par. They purchase sight to 5 day cheeks at 4 a • per cent discount; 30 day bills at 1, and 60 do •i a 2 per cent discount. Out door rates are a fraction better. Freights. —Foreign have declined since our last. Several engagements have heeii made during the week at Id and 11-I6d for square and round biles cotton to Liverpool, and 65 shillings per ca>k for rice. Nothing doing for Havre. Coastwise—For New York the riles have also declined, and are j dull at 4 a |e for squire and toiind b .les cotton, ami $ 1.50 per cask for rice For Boston, the rates are f.- for square and round bates cotton and 8 .75 for rice. For Baltimore, last engagements Jc for I square and round bales cotton.and $2 pet - ca-k for rice. For Philadelphia, the rale is »c per lb for square ba:es cotton an I $1.75 per cask fur rice. CHARLESTON, March6. —Cotton —The Cot ton market at the dale of our last report was in a quiet state, owing to the posi ion which holders had assumed relative to prices, who, looking for ward to a decline in freight engagements.were gen erally demanding advanced rates, hut purchasers refused to operate to any extent, and hence the comparatively stagnant state of the market at the clo«e of the week. On Saturday lasi a good in quiry prevailed, but as on the preceding day. the trade were unable to come, to terms, which limit ed the sties to 8: 0 hale-; prices, however, assum ed an upward tendency, although no positive ad vance was established. Purchasers were early in attendance on Monday, and the decline in the rate of freight to Liverpool, which took place on that day, induced one or two parties to extend their operations, and fully 3300 bales passed into second hands at improved rates. 'There was also a good demand for the article on 'Tuesday, hut the trans actions were checked, as buyers were unwilling to submit to the demands of holders. At the close of business on that day the sales had reached 260 b bales, and prices ruled 4c. higher than at tlie close of the previous week. But ers renewed I lie i r ef forts on Wednesday to operate, and would have bought freely, ns we have been informed, at the improvement noticed above hut they were, in a measure, compelled to abandon the market, in consequence of the stringent prices a-ked. and the sales were confined to some 1690 hah s. (>n Thurs day operations were partially suspended, as ihe weather was very unfavorable for out door busi ness—sales 590 bales. Yesterday a fair inquiry existed, but the transactions were limited to iO >0 hales, owing to the high prices required, which liavegradually st : ff'iied from day to day. until at the close of the week, our quotations, as given be low. indicate an improvement on ail qualities of | to 4c. 'The sales since our last rover 9 450 bales, against the receipt in the same time of 7590 bales. 'The sales comprise 14 hales at 9J; i 2 at 9i; 125al '*94; 219 at 94; 168 at 91; 347 at 94; 1522 at 10; 495 at 104; 1616 at 04; 960 at I0|; 2032 at 104 ; 449 at I Os; 1137 at 101; 52 at l(ij; 727 at It; and 9 bales t at I ’ fe. We quote ordinary to good ordinary 10 a 104; middling to good middling 101 at 14; mid dling fair 10f a 101; and fair and fully fair 11 a life. The transactions in Long Cotton, so far as our knowledge extends, embrace about 240 bags of Sea Islands and Mainea, at prices ranging from 32 t 045 cents. We understand that sales have been effected at a decline of 2 a 3c. p-r lb. on the prices obtained prior to the arrival of the Camhri i. Gran i—'The. receipts of corn during the week ha v e been rather heavy than otherw be, and owing to this circumstance, and the recent decline in other markets, a further reduction in price has been submitted to. 'The receipts from North Cs r olina may he put down at 15.590 bushels, and by ; the railroad upwards of 8000 bushels. The former I w ith the exception of a cargo of 2100 bushels of superior w bite flint, which changed hands on terms not made public, were sold at prices ranging from ; 87 to 95c |>er hnsln-1. Tlie stock is light, j and the first shipments will bring good prices.— Tlie sales of North River were at $1,15 per IcQ lbs. Flour. —The market continues very quiet. The ! business of the week has been confined solely to Western,of which upwards of 500 barrels fine and sups fine are reported to hava been sold at prices ranging from $6 to 64 per bid. Sugars. —The receipts of the week comprise 111 hhds from Cienfugos, of mixed quali’y, winch were sold on terms not made public; but we are assured by one of the purchasers that ibe. brought ; in the neighborhood of 7t a7l c. A few hhds of the Delta® have been sold at 94c. There have been received since our last, about 81:5 hhds and 4 4 tierces coastwise, a large portion of which is . Louisiana, but in consequence of the inclement i state of the w eather towards the close of the week, | which prevented their being lamb'd, the liansac- j lions did not exceed 90 hhds w Inch vveie sold at ! prices ranging from 8 to Bic. Molasses. — There have been no a rivals of Cu- I ha during the week; and as mir quotations have reference to previous wholesale operations, they must for the present he considered nominal. The I receipts of tin* vvet-k embrace 62 hhds Mucovado, i a part of which changed hands at 28c per gallon; and 425 hbls and 49 hhds from N>vv Orleans. A port On of ihe barrels were run offat 35 a 36c per j gallon; but at the close of the week an advance was asked on these prices. Coffee. —'The stock consist® solely of Rio de scriplions.and the transactions have been confined to small lots within the range of our quotations. Dorn-Stic Liquors —'The transactions have been . confined to New Orleans Whisky, about 290 bhl . : of which were taken at 25 a 26c per gallon.— Other quotations are nominal. Freights. —We. quote to Liverpool Cotton in square hags at Id.; Rice 56®. Three, vessels have been taken up for Havre at 14c. for Colton in square bags, and $4 per 600 lbs for Rice. 'There is veiy little offering for New York; and we quote nominally 4c. for Cotton in square bags, and sl4 per tierce for Rice. 'The Boston rates have under gone no change, and we quote as formerly.
