S. sloop of war Decatur, arrived at this port yesterday, after a very boisterous i passage of twenty-four days from Norfolk.— i Owing to the miserable manner in which her reams had been payed, the ship leaked so | badly (hat it became necessary, a few days | out from Norfolk, to scuttle her berth deck; j and the leak continued throughout the pas- ! sage. While reefing topsails in a gale, off Grand Cuyman’s Thomas Proctor, ordinary seaman, 1 fell overboard and was drowned. Lieut. N. j Collins and a boat's crew promptly volnn- j tcered for the perilous effort to save him, but it was deemed impossible for the boat to live and their noble offer was reluctantly de clined. In the same gale the ship rolled away one of her quarter boats—the iron work giving away. The Decatur is bound for the Gulf Squad ron, and will leave here when repaired. A ItCTolullounry Hero Gone. Died, In Coweta Countv, on the 9tn ult. in the 93d year of his age, John Neely, a patriot and Revolutionary Soldier. He was born in Ireland, on the 15th of February. 1755, and came to Ametica when about 7 or 8 years of age. CHARLESTON, April 2d--- Cotton.— We stated in our report ofthc 27th ultimo that when we closed our inquiries on Friday, operations were partially suspended. It will be recollected that on the receipt of the telegraphic accounts per the Hibernia on the Tuesday previous, a demand prevailed for coastwise shipment, and holders obtained advanced rates; the non arrival how ever of the letters, either on Wednesday or Thursday, kept the market quiet, without any change in prices. At the close of the week the private advices by this arrival came to hand, but t as purchasers were engaged with thetr corres pondence the market was neglected, as only 100 I bales were reported to have been sold. On Satur day last near 1500 bales changed hand*;, and hotdi rs obtained prices that they w< re unable pre viously to realize. Monday wasya day of some excitement, near 2700 bales on even more stringent terms. A good demand also pre vailed on Tuesday, but the operations were limit ed to some i 100 bales; owing to the high preten sions ofsdlers; ami from the same cause the sales of Wed esday were restricted to 1100 bales, and yesterday to 1200 bales.
