Dr. Henry Branham has used this medicine in his own case, and has prescribed it to many others, gives it as his opinion, that It is one of the safest and most vahia ■ bie medicines that can be used in imperfect diges tion, liver complaints, constipation and irregular i stale of the bowels. It is useful in bilious com j plaints, to persons recovering from bilious fevers, i and in sick or nervous liead-arl e. To pregnant i j women, who are subject to costiveness, this mecli ; cine is well suited. In regulating the state of the 1 stomach arid bowels, and promoting digestion, it is 1 particularly useful. Terms—Two Dollars. in advance. ’t’KTE have long legarded it as u must humiliating re ▼ v flection upon the South, that no professedlv neu 1 i tral amily journal has yet keen sustained w thin her bor- I ! tiers. We have tested the experiment whether such a i paper could not be supported at the immediate South, \ ' and though not wholly unsuccessful, our < xperience has ! ta-ig .it us that the papers of this class published in the large Northern cities, possess advantages over those of i j the country, which, in a measure, d fy enmpe irion. But | , here tlie case is different. Baltimore, standing as t does i on the 1 o tier ofthe Southern States, is yet near enough l to the greet commercial, literary and political emporium, j to be included in the neighborhood of’great American ' cities, and to enjoy all the advantages, as a radiating j no'mt, which are possessed by either Philadelphia, I> > s tou orNi w York. A paper issued from Baltimore has ail the I facilities for obtaining the latest literary intelligence, as I j well as the current literature of the day, foreign and do- | i mestic, that are enjoyed by the journals <>f the Northern ! j cities. The Western Continent is as large, as cheap, I and can be better adapted to the wan:s and tastes of [South ern readers, than those Northern papers which now draw so large ah amount of their patronage from the Souther public. Entertaining these views, we have looked with confi dence to the success of the Continent. Eiirlit month’s j experience has tended to strengthen ihatcoufideiice, and j now we enter upon its publication with a firm conviction 1 that all that is necessary to secure for it a circulation i equal to that of its Northern cotemporaries, is a faithful and energetic devotion of our he.st abilities to make it a useful and entertaining Family Journal. It is our de j sign to make the Western Continent emphatically a | Southern family paper, that may be read w ith interest i and profit by every member of a Southern family.— With this view. we shall draw for our literary depart ment, from the hot sources.such matter as will interest i and entertain the mind, without offending the taste or | orruptiug the morals of our readers. Pains will be taken to g i vC the latest Intel licence on al subjects of interest to the general reader, to the rxclu | sion ofthe vast amount of local matter, such as personal 1 gossip, police reports, theatrical and otiier criticism** ; which make up so large a portion ofthe staple, of some of the popular wcekl es of the North. In a Word, though \ we shall endeavor t>> make our paper interesting to all, our chief aim shall be to adapt it to the wants and tastes of tlie people ofthe Som li and South-West, it pou w horn, and these of our own city who are disposed to sustain such a journal, we must mainly depend fur support. R lying more upon the intrinsic merits of our paper, than on any promises we might make in a prospectus, ; wc will close by appealing to the readers of the South j and West for a share of that patronage w hich they so liberally bestow upon the overgrown weeklies of the | North. Terms —The Western Continent is printed on a main i moth sheet of3o hy 44 inches, on fair type, and securely I mailed to subscribers, at Two Dollars per annum, ’n advance. Liver or Chest, after reading the following letter, just received from a mi st respectable inhabitant of Westchester County New Voi k. Tarrytown, A ng. 9, 1 q 44. Dear Doctor—lt is difficult to find words to express the gratitude which I feel towards you for the interest you j have taken to relieve me in my distress. In the year 1 1812 I contracted a heavy cold, which finally settled on I my lungs; in a few mouths after 1 commenced coughing j and raising offensive matter, which smelt very bad. i Having heard that Sherman’s Lozenges were good for a i cough I tried a few boxes of them, but they had not the ! least effect on me. 1 then culled in the best physician in the i place, whoa tended me a few months, but without sue I cess; I then saw an advertisement in one ofthe city papers of Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry, of w hich I 1 puri based three bottles, at tliecoruer of Fulton and Nas -1 sau streets, bui I could not perceive t e least beneficial j effect from it. on the contrary 1 think it was a gi -at iu . jui_ tonic. Si. ... after t,-ing it 1 commenced raising blood in large quantities ; I was taken down sick al.d , j confined to the house for three months, during which I time 1 lost my appetiie and fell away very fast; I was j then induced toconsult Dr. Curlisof New York, (one of , i the best physicians in the city,) but he could do mono good. I again became worse, and was confined to tlie house all last winter and spring, and I gave up all hope of ever getting any better, as I again raised blood and ray ; cough was very severe, together with a pain in my hrea-l I and undertke shoulder blade. Mv friends now vc „p » ! all hopcol my recovering, and thought every day was i the last. A bout this lime I heard of your BALSAM OF I.IVERWORT being pood fur consumption, but 1 was f like many others, "id was fearful that it might be a regu lar humbug; I however finally consented to try it, as I thought it could make me no worse. My brother then purchased a botllc of it at 375 Bowery, N. V.. and I com menced taking it. and by the time I had used one botllc H full I could sleep all night, and in the morning Iliad an appetiie for my breakfast. I still keep on taking it ami find great benefit from it—the pain in my breast is entire ly gone, and I raise no more blood. Within the last two months I have gained in weight six pounds and much in streng h. I would therefore advise ail who have any affec ionof the Lungs or Liver to try tlie Genuine Dr. Taylor’s Balsam of Liverwort, for I truly believe it to bethe best remedy in existence for diseases of the Lungs or Liver. Should any one doubt the above statement re lativeto your valuable medicine, let li.m cull on me,and I will convince them ofits virtue Yours respectfully, DE REVERE.
