all descriptions ofgrain flour, from stronger in
dications of reduced stocks in the country, and
a steady demand from some of the inte r iorinar«ets.
A large business has been done in American
flour at 3*s a 10s per hid, ll\g latter being for
the best Western, and at those prices the market
remains firm and steady. Indian Corn has also
been going off more freely, and is saleable at
52s a 54s per qua-Rer; Indian corn meal 25s a 2Gs

The coin markets of France, Holland and
Belgium, .after a temporary depression, have
ralied, and are decidly advancing agipn, which
has doubtless contributed to the improvi ment in
our market, and in the last few days the purchases
of grain for the ex [torts to the continent have been
resumed in London.
The continued export of gold, reaction in the
corn morket indicating large wants of for reign
supplies than was before supposed, have produced
great stringency in the money market. The
Bank of England has not onlvr advanced i's
minimum rate of interest to lie per cent, hut
virtually by the strinent regulation it lias adopted
in discounts, has made the general rate at six per
cent, even on bills at two month-, and declines
altogether to discount paper maturing after the
end of June There has not yet been time to see
the full effects of this upon the produce markets.
The last sale of turpentine was at lls Id per

P. S. Monday, 19th April.—The monnv pres
sure has been m ich more severely felt to-dav than
previously, and has thrown the cotton market
quite aback. The speculative demand is quite
suspended, and though 3000 to 4000 bales have
been sold pri -es have 'Oven wa about JO per lb
from the highest rales curing the excitement of
ti e last week, after the arrival of the Boston
steamer of the Ist inst.
The corn markets on the other hand continue
to look up, Western if ur having sold at 4 Is fid
to 42s per bbl; and Indian corn may be quoted
535u54s per quarter.
HAVRE, April 17.— CoVon. —Up to the close
of the last week the flatness continued to predomi
nate in the. transactions, and ordinary New Or
leans cotton for delivery, experienced a decline of
sf; on Monday at the opening, owing to orders re
ceived from Liverpool, about 1900 bales changed
bands, descriptions which had before receded,
nearly recovered the ground they had lost; impulse
merely transitory,on the following day symptom
of animation had disappeared, yesterday our mar
ket had assumed a dull aspect, operations confined
to the immediate wants for consumption; sales ver
trifling,am prices may he written at If to 2 below
those at the close of our last report; advices of the
17th ult.. from the United States were upon the
whole of a satisfactory tenor, but they were not
productive of any material change; trade continues
unnropitious, buyers evince so decided a reluc
tance to pnreha e beyond their most urgent ne
cessities. no improvement can pus. ihly accrue.—
The protracted clearness in breadstuff's, which
has somewhat increased wiihin the last few davs,
coupled wnh the unfavorable situa ion of money
matter:-, are also serious obstacles to amendment.
Just as we were going to press, received advices
to 17th stating that the cotton market has been
slack throughout the week, owing principally to ac
counts received from almost all the manufacturing
towns in France of the bad condition of the manu
facturers, who are universally reducing their
bands; news, however, which has arrived hereto
day, via England, of the state of the cotton crop
in Araeri« a, has induced holders to believe that
the markets will nor be glutted, notwithstanding
the few demands they have upon them, they do
not feel disposed to sell at a low figure; -ales .561

We witnessed this match yesterday, which
excited much interest among “the fancy,”

beaut'fill and Ihe track in fine order, except
a portion which was muddy from the Jute
rains. The following was the result:
Mile I feats in Harness—best three in Jive.
Ist heat—won by M rs. Caudle—Time 2.53.
2nd. heat, was decided to be a dead heat.
Bo'ti horses broke several times and the
mare came out about a neck ahead, in a gal
lop. The judges gave opinion that the grey
horse would have won the heat, but that
there was foul riding by his Jockey. Time
2 46.
2nd. heat—won by Mrs. Caudle—Time
2.53. Harlaem Boy took the studs when one
third round and stopped for a few seconds
almost still, enabling the mare to make a
wide distance between her and the horse,
which be could not make up.
3rd. heat—won by Mrs. Caudle—Time
2.62. Harlaem Boy was very obstinate anl
as in the second heat, owing to this cause,
the horses could not be started till after
several efforts, consuming much time and
patience.
The result proved that if the mare was
not the most fleet, she was at least the most
reliable and the safest to bet upon. Before
the race Harlaem Boy vvas the favorite at two
to one. These odds were given till after the
second heat, after which there was but little
betting.
To-day there will be an interesting con
test for a purse of SSO. Dutchess and Col
umbus, two horses of notoriety, are on the
ground and expected to enter. Good sport
may be looked for.

that they will not be disappointed by so
doing.

A Deserved Compliment.
At the close of Dr. Boynton’s Lecture last
evening, which vvas attended by a very large
and intelligent audience. Dr. Paul F. Eve
requested the audience to wait a few mo
ments, when His Honor, the Mayor, was call
ed to the Chair. The object of the meet ng
was then slated bv the Chairman, when the
following preamble and resolution was unan
imously adopted;
As many oLonr citizens who have attend
ed the able and instructive lectures of Dr.
Bovnton, are demons of availing themselves
of his present visit to obtain from him ad
ditional instruction, therefore.
Resolved, That a committee of three be
appointed by the Chair to wait upon Dr. Boyn
ton, to express our high gratification with
his Lectures and request him to dtdiver an
other course of Lectures on Natural Science
—or such of its branches as he may himself
select.
The Chair nominated Dr. Paul F. Eve, Dr.
Joseph Milligan and Win. T. Gould, Esq.,
said Committee; who after waiting upon Dr.
Boynton again introduced him to the audi
ence, Dr. B in a few neat and appropriate
remarks expressed his thanks for the man
ner in'which he had been received by the
cit zens of this city, and his gratification at
their approval of his lectures. He expressed
a willingness to repeat a part, at least, of his
Course, commencing this evening. The au
dience expressed their gratification at this
determination by the most enthusiastic ap
plause.

A VALUABLE TESTIMONY*
We like ulall ;i ties, to give credit when credit

distressed, we are Mould, gratified; we, therefore,

beneficial effects of Wistar’s Balsam of Wild

We seldom resort to patent medicines, having
a great respect for the skill of the medical profes
sion, but chance threw into our way the above
named medicine, immediately after the close of
the lute session of the Legislature, wh- n our
lungs were almo.-t dried up by the highly ratified
atmosphere of our stove-wanned Stale-house.
The Balsam immediately relieved us of a most
harassing cough, which threatened our health in
a serious degree. We feel that we are indebted
te it for some fifteen pounds of animal weight—
which addition being once FELT, cannot be
forgotten.

COTTON.—The Caledonia’s advices came to
hnn«l on Sunday evening per telegraph, and our
market opened yesterday with a good enquiry.
The stringent prices, however, demanded by hold
ers, in a measure checked operations. The few
sales which took place were at an advance of I a

sering is limited, both sellers and buyers appear
ing willing to await the receipt of their foreign
letters, which came to hand last evening. Middling

yesterday and at them sum: few sales were made
to speculators. •

)BILE, May s.— Colton. —Our last report left
the m irkoi m an unsettled, and excited condition
—it being generally supposed an inkling of the
Cambria’s accounts w ere in the city by private
express received by Tuesday mording’s mail boat
from •’Stockton. On W ednesday the telegraphic
outline of these accounts in the newspapers came
through. 'Phe sales on that day were estimated at
10U0 bales, at prices reported in the morning—
say lOfa BRc. for middlings. Thursday the litters
per steamer Cambria came to hand, w ith which
parlies were for the most part occupied till near
tlie close of business hours. 'Phe accounts receiv
ed by express, as also those by the newspapers,
were confirmed, and were regarded as being of a
favorable character for cotton. Extracts from
circulars and papers, giving the de ails, have been
given elsewhere it. our columns. tSales of that
day were nut large, hut at improving rates. Friday
there was a better inquiry, resulting in the sale of
some 1500 to 2000 ha les. For the last three davs,
a good demand has prevailed, running to a consid
erable extent on the finerquaiiiies, which are there
fore relatively higher in our scale of quotations.
Yesterday there was a litt’e less done, it is be
lieved from the fact, that rumor obtained some
currency iu the nerving that the Sarah Sands’
accounts, several days later than the Cambria’s
and of a still more favorable character, were in
the city by private express. The rumor was un
true; but these accounts are fully due. and all par
ties seem rather disposed to wait a lilt e for their
arrival. 'Phe bin ingf* r a few days past has been
mostly for the North, w ith some to comolete car

Our last report left the Cotton market in a very
unsettled stale, ?s holders were contending for a
larger advance in prices than buyers were inclined
to accede to, and business, therefore, was quite at
a stand when we. closed our review on Friday.
On Saturday a somewhat similar slate of tilings
existed, though there was rather more willingness
to sell on the nan of some factors, and a few lots
changed hands, amounting In about Isoobales. On
Monday there was quite an active enquiry, a ru
mor having prevailed that the accounts by the
Sarah Sands were in the hands of some parties, in
a vaoce of (lie mail. Indeed a highly respectable
house received a Idler from Mobile, staling that
the Sarah Sands’ news had been received there,
and that the Cotton market at Liverpool had ad
vanred an }d afterllie Cambria left, with sales on
the srh of lOjOi’O bales. This intelligence led to
increased firmness on the part of factors, and the
sales, w Inch amounted to about 35 0 bales, were
made at rates fully up to, and in some instances a
fraction above, our Saturday’s quotations. Yes
terday, (be mail having come through as late as
due, it was found that the rumored arrival of the
Sarah Sand*’accoun - was at least a mistake; but
nevertheless there continued to he a fair enquiry
for Colton, and some 4000 bales w ere sold, the
Ifglit, supply offering, and the very full prices
claimed, preventing more, extended operations.
'Phe total sales of tiie three days sum up 9000
bales, taken mostly for England and the North,
and the closing rates, which are favorably in
fluenced by a sudden deline in freights, and a ra id
advance in exchanges, are 4 a 4 of a cent higher
thaw our quotations ot S iturday last, w th but little
