'l‘he substance oi the news, as com municated by telegraph for the Journal of Commerce, is here subjoined. The la-l quotation for flour at Liverpool was 50s. bbi. The quotation tor .Mobile Cotton is probably too low. Liverpool, May 19 — The Cotton trade tins suffered severely from the pressure which has prevailed iu monetary circles. A better feeling has however begun to mani fest it sell, since merchants have had leisure to peruse the advices brought by the steamer Cambria. A greater amount of business is doing, and prices have an advancing tenden cy. The sales of the fortnight ending Mav l-lth, were 55,360 bales. OI this quantity 4100 American were taken on speculation, 1800 American fur export. In the course of the week ending May I tfh, a further de cline of one-eighth penny per pound was ac cepted by the holders of American descrip tions. 'Plie price.- declared by the Commit tee of Brokers, May 14 li, for fair cotton, were, —Bowed, 6|>l., Mobile, do: Orleans, H|d. The imports of the fortnight, 33.333 bales; of this year, 473.357. The estimated stock of cotton in Liver pool on the I 4th May was 523,500 bales; at the same time last year, 780.870, thereby fallowing a deficiency this year ut 393,370 bales. The smallness of the stock of grain a!! over Europe, and the consequent dearness ot provisions, become more and more teit, and high as prices were previously, a further and important advance has taken place in the va lue of breads! lifts, both in this country and in many of the near continental ports, witiiin the last fortnight. The doubts generally entertained whether cn< u_h will reach us from foreign countries to make up for the home deficiency until the n xt harvest, have been the cause of the late advance, and we must admit that the short ness of the supplies from the growers, the rapid diminution of the stocks in the grana ries at the different maritime ports, and the general tone of the advices frt m abroad, have afforded ample grounds lor apprehension.— Wheat ha- however reached so high a point as to put it beyond the reach ot the poorer rlascs. A greatly curtailed consumptb n must therefore follow, —and this may perhaps he the means of staving any further immedi ate rise in the value. 'The latest accounts from the Continent fahow that much scarcity prevails in several parts, but as the navigation was opened, large supplies were expected to comedown flie rivers in a very short time, whereby the wants of the people ul those countries would not only be supplied, but numerous cargoes would be transported to this Kingdom. Ac- | counts from Smyrna, dated 30th ulr, mention that grain had further declined in value, and ! that the accounts from the adjacent localities on the subject of the crops, were decidedly of a nature greatly to allay future anxiety, whilst the estimates made of the quantities available for present necessities, exceeded all previous returns. The market for American cured privisions keeps steady, and as there is little or nothing ot this description of goods n »w arriving from Ireland, the importations from the 11. S. in most instances meet a ready sale. The value of beef, pork and hams is much the same as noted. Bacon, however, in consequence of tiie scarcity of supplies, and particularly of fresh meet, which ranges from 7| to 9 pence per potmd, has an excellent demand, and the rates now current are from 2s. to 3s. above ■ those last noted. Money Market.— The pressure upon the money market has been more severe than , has been experienced for years past. Ma*- ters however appeared to be improving during the last week. There has been an increase I in the deposilcs to the extent of five hundred and seventy thousand pounds, while the rest and the reserve luve also increased cons de rably. The bullion has increased to the ex tent of a quarter of a million. These favo rable circumstances have enabled the Bank to discount more freely, even on Bills that have had as much as three months to run Advances are made to Bankers at 5A per cent, on promiscuous paper. The favorable state of tlie American ’Changes has had a beneficial effect upon the market. The Consol market nevertheless has been marked throughout by general heaviness, and the belieNs general that the Chancellor of the Exchequer will have to fund a portion of the Exchequer Bills now afloat in Liverpool.— We are glad to slate that the payments of the present week, which are supposed to be the heavest ever known, are provided for, and that the Hibernia will take out the news ot all engagements fulfilled. A Dublin correspon -1 dent of the Morning C ironicle, says, ‘’There have been further tumultuary proceedings and processions of the pea santry in various parts of the country, and the military and police have been in general requisition to keep this spirit of i insubordination in check. The reports of the progress of pestilence are quite disheartening,and notwithstanding all the imports ot food, and the immense extent of relief in food and money, great desti tution still prevails, and die markets are advancing. All accounts concur in showing that the mortality is still very j considerable. According to some calcu ( lations, the population has already been | diminished to the extent of nearly one i million, from deaths and emigration. The demand was partly for speculation and partly for export, j Southern and Georgetown brands weie sold at prices approaching SlO per bbl. There was a considerable advance in wheat, though the sates were light.
