ty rave as it may—let their mendacious presses forge documents for the purpose of bringing this act of tfie President into ridicule or contempt —there is no act of h s connected with the war, clear-sighted as they all are, that can be more trium phantly sustained upon every considera tion of wisdom, prudence, good policy, or the uniform practice of nations at war.— Athens Banner, 8/ h hint. Another Fire. On Sunday last, about 4 o’clock, p. m., our city was again aroused bv the ap palling cry of fire. When first discover ed, the smoke and flames were bursting from a wooden shod immediately in the rear of the large wooden building occupied by Mr. Goetches as a Carpenter’s Work Shop, on Sr. Clair street. The flames immediately communicated to the main building—thence to the adjoining (mil dings on the corner of St. Clair and (Jjle thorpe streets, owned we believe, hy Mr. Juc. M. Johnson, and occupied by Sarnmis & llooney as a Cabinet Work.Miip, Jer emiah Terry, as a provision store, and Smith & Robinson as a carriage shop. An adjoining blacksmith’s shop on Oglethorpe afreet, with the nut house, belonging to Mr. F. To! •y, on the lot rv’ar the opposi e corner, were also consumed. The dwel ling ofCapt P. T. Schley was in im rrrnenl danger, and was only saved hy the intervenig shade trees and the timely exertion of those present. The progress of the flames was arrested at the residence of Mr. Vm. Salisbury, on Oglethorpe street, hv the almost unparalleled ever tionsofthe Fire Company", # it h such aid ns could be given by the citizens gener ally. We have no means of ascertaining the loss with any kind of accuracy, but sup pose it must amount to some twelve or fifteen thousand dollars—mostly without insurance. It falls, too, peculiarly" hard on the sufT-rers, from the fact that they were mostly mechanics, and lost, in ad dition to larae quantities of lumber, the wh de or greater part of their tools. Mr. Goetches was a heavy His business was carried on e.vensively, and he had about the premises immense quantities of valuable lumber, a large collection of costly fools, and a great deal of work ready finished off. Gibers suffered in the tame wav, but not to the same extent. There i* little doubt hut that the entire block, which is mostly of wooden houses closely built tanother, would have been destroyed but for the Engine Company, and the Cistern in 13 oad street- that sup plied them with water The value ot the Cistern, has been apparent now on sever al occasions, and we hope to see them soon in every street of the citv. The En gines are utterly worthless without water. So far, we have not been informed as to the probable origin of the fire. There was none known to be in the neighborhood of w here it was discovered, and the gen eral belief seems to be that it was the work of an inccnj-'ory.— Columbus En quirer, B lh ins/. Gua«t 4iirhtcud. The Planters’ hank yerlerriay declared a dividend .»f five percent, from the profit of fiie Institution forth# last sue months, which is payable to tin* Stockholders on and after the iQili instant.-- -Sqcanr.ah Republican, Bth inst, 5.; i'l-.Io:;i y . The operating erf Lithotomy was perform ed on Saturday, last, the s’h ins?., on a man at the hospital near this city, by Dr. W, G. Bulloch, with complete success. Toe stone taken from tire bladder in this instance was as large as a hen’s egg, and weighed one ounce and a half. The operation would have lasted but about seven minutes, hut for the adhesion of the stone to the bladder, which rendered it necessary to tea* it out after breaking it into several fragments.—- This difficulty necessarily prolonged (lie ope ration somewhat, but we are plad to learn that (he patient is doing well. Much credit is awarded to Dr. Ru loch for the skill and admirable manipulation which he exhibited ; in this operation—the first one of the kind that he ever performed. The Docter used hi the operation the Lithofome of Dupnyf ren, which makes a semi lunar incision. lli? a remarkable fact that this is the first operation of the kind ever performed in this <■ ifv, and as we are assured, in any part of the low country. Dr. Waring stated to a medical friend ofours, that during his long practice fie never had seen nor heard of a case Requiring the operation in this city.— The disease of gravel, as it is called when the concretions are in small pebblv or sandy deposite. and stone, when the calculous de posits are in larger masses, from its more frequent occurrence in limestone districts, lias been attributed with much apparent rea son to the use of the waters found there. But let not the lovers of good eating- and drink ing flatter themselves that these calculi are produced by water alone. Those predisposed to gout are it danger of it. D sordered di gestion. particularly when arising from ha bitual excess at the table, is an active cause of the complaint.— lb. DEATHS. Fowle, —-Dear Bir—For the benefit of the afflicted, I cheerfully make the following I statement for publication. In January last, my non, . 16 years old, was taken will* severe pains in the i side, and a violent cough soon came on. lie was j soon confined to his room, and continued to grow i worse for about six weeks, when he had become | too weak to sit up, and had night sweats. The j rough was almost constant and hr daily expecto rated large quantities of matter from the lungs, ) which were evidently in a *tate of ulceration.— ' Several Physic],-uis pronounced him in a quick Consumption and past relief and declined giving him medicine. One of rny neighbors had been , cured of an alarming cough by the BALSAM Oh i WILD CHERRY, and was advised to try it. I procured a bottle and after using it a few days, to ■ our joy and surprise he began to amend, and in a 1 few weeks, after using nearly four bottles, tic ivas ; entirely cured, and able to work on Che farm. As he took ho other medicine after being given I up, than Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry, to that ! alone dp I ascribe lha merit of restoring him fu health. DANIEL J. BEVEA.
