but the history of the past affords ua but
little comfort for the future. Within this
century the Union has acquired.successively,
the Fioridas, Louisiana, and Texas, and it is
now about to acquire the Californias and
some of the richest provinces of Mexico. —
Who shall fix limits to the power of the ac
tive race which people it? Let it once ex
tend to Panama, and its might will be irresis
tible. It will hold the dominion of the seas:
it will monopolize the commerce ot the whole
earth. And when the English language is
spoken on all the shores of the Mexican
Gulf, what human power will be sufficient to
prevent the Island of Cuba and the E iglish
Antilles from falling,by their own movement,
and the impolsesof irresistible attraction, into
the arms open to receive them.”
Whoever will take the trouble to read the
above thinkingly will not fail to discover that
the editor of EL Heraldo is a philosopher in
his review of the past, an enlightened obser
ver of the present, and, in all human proba
bility, a true prophet of the future.
Female Patriotism.
A letter was received day before yes
terday by a gentleman in this city, from
a highly respectable lady in Alabama,
who requested information from him as to
whom she should make application in
order to be permitted to join our forces in
Mexico. She says that site is determined,
if possible, to do her part towards sns
taining the honor of her country, and,
from the tone of her letter, seems willing
to enter either an infantry, artillery, or
dragoon company. After this, who shall
say that the spirit of J tan d’Arc has fled,
or (hat the patriotism of the Maid of
Saragossa does dot still burn in the bosoms
of some of her six? We say, lot the lady
have an appointment, by all means. —

The Schr. Columbia Abandoned.
Captain Harrell, of the packet ship
Orleans, from New York, arrived yester
day, reports that on the 17th nit., in lat.
2LL 4L), lon. 7(i J 80, at meridian, he de
scried a schooner, bearing S. \V , distant
about five miles, under hare poles, with
the American ensign flying in the tore
rigging, union down, lie ran down to and
hailed her: not receiving any answer, lie
sent a bout alongside and boarded her.
►She proved to be the schr. Columbia, of
Philadelphia, abandoned, with the loss of
mainmast, and eighteen inches water in
her hold: in other respects she appeared
to he in good condition, having good sails
and rigging, and plenty of provisions on
board. The hold and forecas le were full
of boxes and bales of merchandize; there
were several packages in the cabin, ap
parently ale and dry goods, addressed to
merchants in Mobile, to which port it was
evident she was bound. Apparently she
had been abandoned that morning, or the
forenoon previous. There Wore several
trunks on deck, all open, but containing
nothing of any value. Capt. 11. placed
an officer and three men on board, with
instructions to proceed with her to Mobile,
hut to touch til Nassau should he deem
il requisite. The wind was blowing fresh
from the N. N. W. at the time. lb.

NEW-OR LEA NS, June 5. Cotton. —Ar-
riv. d flince the Ist inst., 3210 bales. Cleared in
the same time, 6213 hales—making a reduction
in slock of 2073 bales, and leaving on hand, in
clusive of all on shipboard not cleared on the 4th
inst. a stock of 177,655 bales.
The excessive dullness and depression which
had characterized the Cotton market for several
days continued to prevail at the date of our last
report, an 1 we left it in so unsettled a state, and
«o irregular as to prices that strict accuracy in
quotations were wholly unattainable. Bince then
the general characteristics of the market have
remained the same, though the sales have been
somewhat larger in tiie aggregate than in the
early part of the week. On Wednesday about
1600 bales were disposed of, at about the range of
prices quoted in our last, and on 1 hursday 2000
bales were taken, the prices in most instances
being slightlv more in favor of purchasers. Yes
terday there was some enquiry, but we could on
ly learn of sales to the extent of about 1000 bales,
as there was very little cotton offering at the rates
which buyers were disposed to pay, it appearing
to be the determination of factors generally to
sell no faster than is required by theii immediate
necessities, until the European accounts by the
Hibernia come to hand. These will be due here,
by telegraph and express, about Tuesday next,
the Bth inst., and are looked forward to with in
tense interest. The total sales of the week sum
up 7300 bales, of which 4600 bales were sold du-
ring the past three days, taken mostly for England
and die North. In icgard to the prices we find
the market still so unsettled and irregular as to
preclude the possibility of arriving at strict accu
racy in quotations, and vve have again to remark
that our figures in most instances are little more
than nominal. Occasional parcels have been
picked up at even lower rates than we quote, but
round parcels, of a strict classification, can hard
ly be bought at our outside figures. In addition
to the sales there are still some shipments mak
ing on owners’ account.

Whisky. —The Whisky market has been quiet
for several days past, the demand for shipment
having nearly ceased, and prices have fallen back
I a 1$ cent per gallon. The sales of the three
davs amount to about 1500 bbls., the bulk of
which was sold on Wednesday and Thursday,
at 22£ a 23J cents, but yesterday sellers were of
fering at low rates, and the market closes with
great dullness at 22 a23 cents per gallon, the
sales at the highest price being chiefly in small
Sots. Common is very scarce, and we notice sales
of about 350 bbls. at 25$ cts. per gallon.

The flour market is dull and prices are still de
clining. Sales to-day of Genesee brands at $8,87
| a 9 and $3,87s afterwards refused by buyers. The
supply of South-rn is very small. It is held at
$9,75. This flour is much required by bakers to
mix with other qualities—it is found more profita
ble as it contains more moisture and retains it. It
is also in demand for the Canadian provinces.—
Corn meal held at $5.654.
