iiki.—mhw wa-Kgi -g**'"-- ■■ _> ■■ -w* ■ -tt never was worse. Fields which, a momh | since, were visibly green with the growing i weed, are now as barren to the eye as the sand mountains ot Mexico—or if, perchance, any portion of the original growth remains, it is but a scanty stand of scattering stalks, withered from disease and exhausted by the thousand insects that have preyed on their substance.— 1 There may be, now and then, a farm'bat has partially escaped the injury, |>ut these green spots only serve by the con trast to (show how universal and How fatally injurious have been the effects of the causes alluded to. A late cold spring, always calculated to retard the growth of cotton, lias been accompained ibis season by the lice, which, as far as our informa tion extends, have left but few fi-Ids with healthy pla its enough to make a third of a corp. It was fondly hoped, and it was the common belief, founded on former ex petience, that the stuffs wai m r tvs in June would tevive the dying cro( s, and give new life to the expectations ofthe planters. Kven in this they are somewhat disap pointed. The chilly nights and glnomv days of an nnpropil ous spring have at length given place so the warmth of'smn mer; but still but little alteration in the condition of the crops lias taken place. The leaf] ess and exhausted stalks appear utterly inca able of putting forth healthy and fruitful branches. Thus circumstan ced, it is indeed no wonder that the cala mity is so deeply felt and so universally complained of.— Without a sudden and rapid improvement, the present year’s production must he far below the p rev is ous reasonable calculations of producer or consumers. We hope for the best, hut at present see nothing to build a hope » O i upon, W e remember, during the last year, when we spoke ofthe injury to the then growing crop, from the destructive, rava ges ofthe caterpillar and the boll worm, our remarks were attributed, in certain interested quarters, to unworthy motives —to a desire to enhance the price of our great southern staple, by impressing thr* i Northern and European purchasers with a belief that the production would fall far | short ofthe preceding year. D d not the i result verify our remarks? Did not the ; jnjuny thru, as slated, prove so extensive as to convince the most sk-mtical that it was no idle tale? The a* if production scarcely teached the lo\ st estimate of the p! a inters, or the calculations of South orn dealers. any man, at all ac nuairited with the present prospect, pre- | Vud that there is a leasonable probability «»f making as many hales this year as cere rn last year? Upon what can | such a by based? The spring was cold anjl long, the weed is extensive ly Jestro\M by the insects—few planters have halt a stand, and the little that has survived aT'all has scarcely vitality and K’rength enough to feel the influence of more genial seasons* We Venture the assertion, then, that Without some miracle hitherto unknown i ; the l istO' V of the c< t ! on plant, the crop of ibis year must i he unprecedentedly short, and that the j inanu'actu'ers ofthe article may prepare I themselves for such an event, m ■* ■ i m m wwaspio {)CrTlie Annual Meeting of ihe Hume Industry Society, will he. held Tins livening, the 17fh inst.. at St o’clock, in the Presbyterian Lec ture Room. There is much tampering with the fearful mala dy, Consumption, and “numberless alleged rcine <l tes exist, which are hut so many obstacles in ihe way of the proper treatment of the disease. The following letter from a highly respectable gentle jn tn of this city, corroborates our previous im pressions, that Wistar’s Balsam was none of those nostrums. Boston*. April 14,1846. Dr. Seth W. Fuwle Dear Sir, f have been in duced at the suggestion of many of my triends, to make known to the public, through you. the great benefit I have derived from the u«e of the medi cine called “AVISTAR’-S BALSAM OF AN ILIA Cll ERRYin the, hope that others suffering with lung complaints may find the same relief by its use that I have done. The latter part of last summer and in the fall. I suffered greatly from a severe cough, pain in the side, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite, and other symptoms which indicated a rapid decline, three of the most learned and intelligent medical practitioners in the city pronounced my case con sumption, and stated to me that nothing but a | change of climate could be of the least possible, benefit to me, as my lungs were in a very inflamed | and diseased state. At this time, in hopes that I might find some temporary relief for my cough, I | bought a bottle of the Balsam, which not only i gave me the relief that my failing stength required but seemed to give me new life and energy. After taking several bottles of the medicine, my appetite returned, and with it my strength; my cough entirely left me, as also the night sweats, wliiclt previous to this time had been very profuse. ; In five weeks time I gained eight pounds of flesh and have been enabled ever since to take my ac- j •Mstomed exercise, a walk of from three to four miles a day, and attend to my regular business— | I should be most happy to have you refer any one, j who may Wish further particulars to me, at my place of business, .No. 305 Washington street.
