Iheir readiness to acknowledge that they have i rummiued huge evi'.s upon themselves, is the ■ fact that many of them are now willing to ! vote for a Free Trade man for the next ! Presidency. We look upon the Whig presses j that have lately come out for Gen. Tavior a? promising converts to the doctrines of Free ! Trade. Quite willing as we are to admit that j they are admonished, probably, more by a j jinking cause than by patriotic motives, we nevertheless, joyfully congratulate the State i upon the change, and themselves upon their ! escape from their delusions which obscured ! with a shade of criminal darkness, the love of country, which once they claimed as pre eminently theii own. , ; II is to he hoped that, seeing their errors they are now sincere, and that they will join I the Republican party in recovering the heavy fst glory the State suffered, when her own ! roil- became the willing instruments in the hands of others, to e 1 s tve their brethren, and convert this once proud Common wealth into | a despicable and depr n lent province. The Allies. The Whigs held a great anti-Taylor con vention in A.-htabuia county, Ohio, a short time since, at which speeches were made by Hamlm, Gidd ngs and others, and resolutions j adopted against the nomination, by the Whig I party, of any one who has fought in, or been | connected with the war, or holds to tfie per petuation of slavery, as a candidate for the* I Presidency. The Whig papers of Ohio gen- j erally endorse (.he proceedings. The Ashtabu la (Otiio) JSentinel remarks. •‘1 tie people of this county stand prepared j in say that no man—he he Whig, lie he Gen Taylor, or be he what he may—lie ca/urnf, I under such circumstances, receive any aid in his march towards the Presidential chair 1 horn the people of thia country.’*— -lb. Vein Likely, It is sai l that sever.l hundred copies of I Tom Corwin’s speech, were among the : articles found in iSanta Anna’s trunk alier i the battle of Germ G<>rd >. lh. Appearance of the Potato Disease la Ireland. We copy the following notice from the Liter ol tiie Dublin correspondent of the I T roes. ‘•The weather continue* most propitious, I son I the accounts of the grain crops from all quailets are of a highly cheering na- i tore. There is, however, one draw back to tliis gratifying intelligence, viz; that the i fatal po'afo pestilence has induhi ahlv shown itself in various pa its of the Q ;een’s country, and in the vicinity of the town ot Carlow. Ihe s’alk is described as lonk i ; *g healthy, presenting no external ap pearance of disease, hut on a close ex amination of the root, near theiuher, the disease was quite visible, evidently pio gressing upwa-d. and in a state of trans • lion from a sickly stale to decomposition; and vvnat is moreextrao d narv, the seed whs in seme cases sound, and the stalk green and healthy. This is a had aimurv; ‘ * ' hut it is well to he [tieparod for failure thus eafly, that hopes may not be raised which in all human probability will not i be icalised.” We regret tosav t! at letters received bv us tin's morning from Belfast and : Waterford contain rumors to the same effect; but fromoiher paifs of the country j the accounts are very sansfacm y. U a!f »rds, however, some consolation, even if we arc compelled to anticipate the j failure of 11 1 - crop, that not above one foilrtli of iiie usual amount has been planted; and that the bieadth of land sown j w id, wheat, oats and other cereals is much j greater than that of last year.— Bell s Weekly Messenger, May 31. [Correspondence of the Savour, a’t Republican ] Tattnall County, June 12, 1847. Gentlemen —A tragedy of the most shocking kind w«s enacted in Tattnall county on the 3d hist., the particulars of | which, I give you below. A lad, named j Edward Stephens, about four’een years j of age, having procured a piece of plain j line of about six feel in length, and las- i tended it to a j >i-t in the small log-house, | in winch he resided with his mother and ; only sister, hung himself with it during j their absence front V.ome. Upon her re- j turn, she found the door shut, and upon forcing it, beheld to her grief and aston- j ishment, the h *dy of her only son, sus pended by the neck, and every vestige of life extinct. It is worthy of remark, that the. act is supposed to have been premeditated. Gen, Taylor. The newspapers are squabbling about the old General’s politics. We have never heard him sta’e his creed, Hut we know that he was an original Jackson man. i When Gen. Jackson was a candidate the second time, against Mr. Adams, Gen. Taylor and Gen. Twiggs were stationed j here. They took so active a part for Old ; Hickory, that the leaders of the Adam* \ party remonstrated with the Secretary of * War, and Tavior and Twiggs were han- j ished to the frontiers of Arkansas. Gen. Jackson rec ptooaDd this attachment. — N. O. Southerner. AUGUSTA FIRE COMPANY. A regular meeting of the Company, will be held i jit i post S o’clock. Tills Evening, at the. City j Hall. Thonextraordinary success attending the use of this medicine in diseases of the lungs, and the many singular cures it has effected, haviag natu rally attracted the attention of many physicians, . <r ,n, ltJm ! as well as the whole fraternity of quacks, various j conjectures and surmises have arisen respecting 1 composition; some physicians have supposed | 11 to c °ntam iodine, other ignorant pretenders ! roust contain mercury, and to some such j subs tance they each attribute its singular effica | cy.
