r.nrve, and a heavy fog prevailing, it is said
that he was a very careful cautious man.
The down (passenger) train of Friday
night passed over I fig. road only eleven hours
previously—the road Doing in Us usual con
dition.
The Engine, as far as ascertained, is not
Tory seriously injured. A bar of iron passed
nto the boiler as the Engine jumped. The
lender was slightly injured.
The Passenger Cur is not injured and of
•ovijra! passengers not one was hurt. The
htggage Car had only the trucks knocked uli
from under it.
The Engine is on the turn out at Station 12.
The track has been repaired and the train
passed over it on Sunday night.

This is the most serious accident on the |

We learn from Capt. Watson, of the brig
A-'ela, and also from a passenger, in the
sclir. Queen Pomare, both of which vessels
arrived yesterday, from the Havana, that ttie
ship Allas, from New York, bound to Vera
Cruz, with -a portion ol Col. Watson’s Ilegf.,
arrived off Havana, a few days prior to their
departure, and that, a boat with lour officers,
left the ves.-el for the purpose of obtaining
supplies. On passing the Moro they hailed, j
and obtained permission from the officer on
duty to proceed, but strange to say, on their :
arrival at the city of Havana they were ar
resled hv order of the Captain General, and
lined sj>doo each for an alleged violation of
the port regulations. Two of the officers
paid the fine and were relea>ed, the others
however, refused Cocomply, and were retain- j
cd, and remained as prisoners on parole at j
the time our informants left.— Charleston ,

The Crops.
The unprecedented vvei weather has lat
terly affected the crops very seriously. The
planters in all parts of the Stale, are “in the ;
grabs’’ and we understand that the lice ami j
grasshoppers have attacked the cotton crop |
to an alarming extent. Such is Ihe case i
in parts ol Union, and in the neighbor- j
hood of Longlown, Fairfield District. The
ram continues, and the cotton plants show ■
but little disposition to take on shapes. The !
prospect for an abundant provision crop, is 1
lliilenng in the different quarters of the
Stale. — Columbia Carolinian, 29/ h vlt.
Rheumatism* Gout, and Tic Douloureux.
A respectable gentleman called at our office, as '
he said, to inform us that he had been uffiicted ;
for filtecn years with Rheumatism or Goat, and
occasionally with Tic Douloureux; that tie has
been frequently confined to his room for months
together, and otlen suffered the most intense and t
excruciating pains, but that lately he had been \
using JAYNE’S ALTERATIVE, from which
he found the most signal and unexpected relief. ;
He says he found the medicine very pleasant and |
effective, and that he now considers himself ■
thoroughly cured. —Spirit of the Times.

which always arrests those diseases.

The extraordinary success attending the use
ot this medicine in the diseases of the lungs, and
the many singular cures it has effected, having !
naturally attracted the attention of many physi
cians, as well as the whole fraternity of quacks, i
Various conjectures and surmises have arisen re- j
spec ting its composition; some physicians have i
supposed it to contain iodine, other ignorant pre- I
tenders ■n\ it must contain mercury, and to some j
such substance tiiey each attribute its singular el- j
fi- acy. As such opinions are altogether errone- !
ous, and to prejudice many persons
against it, we PLEDGE OUR HONOR that it
contains nothing ot tiiis kind, or anything the
least injurious; on the contrary, it is composed of !
tiie most simple substances, the principal of which j
are the extracts of tar and wild cherry bark, and j
toe whole secret ot its efficacy consists in the i

'Phe great demand for this most important work,
(.of which thousands are sold) has compelled the
issue of a another edition. It is intended especi

creis which should he known to them particularly.
Here every female can discover the causes, symp
toms, and (he most efficient remedies and most
certain mode of cure, in e very complaint to which
her sex is subject.
It is an important question to the married why it
is that we behold so many married females sickly,
debilitated, and prostrated ? as also the causes;
and whether they are susceptible of remedy. They
will here find those important matters, connected
wilh discoveries in medical and physiological sci
ence, which meet this question.
This work is destined to be in the hands of every
wife and mother who has a regard for her own
health and welfare, as well as that of her hus
band.
The revelations contained in its pages have al
ready proved a blessing to thousands, as the innu
merable letters received by the author will at
test.
it is of course impossible to convey more fullv,
in a public journal, the various subjects treated of,
as they are of a nature strictly intended for ttie
married or those contemplating marriage; neitln r
is it necessary, since it is every one’s duty to be
come possessed of knowledge, whereby the suf
ferings to w Inch a wife, a mother, or a sister may
be subject, can be obviated.

The last week closed on a very firm market
with quotations for middling cotton at 94 a 94 cts.
For the three first days of the present week there
was but little done, buyers and sellers awaiting
the 4th June accounts by the Cambria at Boston.
Near the close of the day on Wednesday it be
came apparent that favorable accounts were in
hand, as fully 1200 bales had been taken and 4c.
advance had been paid on all the qualities, espe
cially those of the better descriptions, w hich were
in request on eastern ordeis. Thursday’s mail
brought the expected accounts by telegraphic des
patch, which were received in full on Friday, and
are even more favorable than had been anticipa
ted. 'I hey shew a liberal advance in Liverpool
and Havre, growing out of causes that promised
tobe permanent. A further advance was realized
here in the few- sales that were made yesterday
and the day before, but the market is notsuffi

with our accustomed confidence. The sales of
the week sum up 3500 hales, in daily transactions
