farther South, and they are expected to send the first Sugar to market. If an early frost docs not interfere, the Sugar produce of Louisiana this year trill exhibit the richest yi-sld of any single agricultural product in any one of the States of the Union.— N. O. Delta 13 th in st. Whaling Gun. —We saw yesterday, at the store of Capt. E. W. Gardner, a very curious contrivance for killing whales. It is a short gun, weighing some twenty-five pounds —the stock being of solid brass—from which a har poon is to be fired into the animal. The handle of the harpoon goes into the barrel of the gun about a foot, and a line is fastened to < it—of course outside of the gun —by which the 1 whale is to be held. There is also a bomb lance , for the purpose of killing the animal. The instrument is loaded with powder, and a slow match is led from the magazine, through the , handle, to the end which goes into the gun. — When the lance is fired into the whale the slow match ignites ; and in about half a mi nute the fire reaches the powder in the head of the instrument, which instantly explodes, , killing the animal outright. At least this is : w hat the article is intended to do. The whole apparatus is certainly very ingenious ; whether or not it is really an improvement on the pre sent mode of killing whales, is more than we are able to sar. That is a question which must be settled by the whalemen themselves.—Nan tucket Inquirer. The Telegraph. —We last week had the plea sure of seeing the posts for this long looked for wonder, put up. We believe they are now in the ground, all the way through to the Rail < Hoad in this place. It is expected that the Telegraph will be in complete operation by the tir?>t week in October.— Columbia South Caro linian, Aug. 17. Chancellor Harper. —We regret to learn, by a letter received on Saturday last, lies danger ously ill at Glenn Springs. We trust the wri ter has been misinformed, ani that the valua ble life of this distinguished Jurist may yet be 1 spared many years, to adorn the bench, to which he has been so bright an ornament. — lb. * W e understand, from letters received in this place, that there have been exceedingly heavy rains throughout Lancaster, York and Union districts, which have done immense injury to the Cotton crops in those sections. From the same source, we learn that Corn looks re markably well, especially on red lands.— lb. A iUofi—-A row. attended with rather scri Cun consequences, took place at a house “ doxcu town" on Tuesday last. Some of the volun teers, thinking themselves aggrieved by some former treatment, went to the house and com snenced an assault from without. They were fired on from within, and one of the number, a member of Capt. Grant’s company, danger ously wounded —having received in his head, breast and abdomen, six or eight buckshot.— After breaking into the house, they fell upon a volunteer not connected in any way with tiie difficulty, and inflicted On him through ( mistake, several wounds, of which it was at 1 one time thought he could not recover. The ringleaders were promptly arrested by the civil authorities, and lodged in jail until next morn- ■ , ing. On examination before the Mayor and Council, they were severally discharged on > payment of all damage, and the word of their officers that they should ba hereafter restrain ed from too frequent opportunities to disturb the public peace. The officers have ample power, and it will no doubt be their pleasure, *o to control their men as to do no damage to the citizens and bring no further censure on the soldiers. We are informed that both the individuals so seriously hurt in the riot, are at this time likely to recover. — Columbus Enquir er. 17 th i/ist. Special Notices. SIdAMBOAI COMPANY Oi* GEOR GIA. The trans actions have been limited to some 150 bales, prices ranging from !lj| to 13c. ft fee .—This article within a few days has attract ed the attention of purchasers, and some 500 to 600 tcs. have been sold at rather better prices than those current during the previous fortnight. The rales have been at prices ruling from ss| to sjj per hundred. MOBILE. Aug. 1 L— Colton. —The receipts since Friday last amount lo only 189 bales, and exports -for the same time are 6635 to Liverpool. 1713 to N. York, and 402 to Providence, leaving the stock on Land and on shipboard not cleared last evening, 36,551 bales against 9263 last season. At the clo.e of our fast review this market was quiet, but very firm, all parties waiting later dates from England by the steamers Washington and Hi bernia, tnen nearly due. These advices came to hand on Saturday by slips from the Magnetic Tele graph; their contents, although meagre, were, on the whole, considered encouraging, still but 800 bales were on that day sold at very full prices.— On Monday the letters and papers came through, giving os full advices, and shewing the English markets to be in a steady and strong position, with out any positive improvement on the accounts of the 3d July. They had. however, the effect of causing quite an animated demand for the article here, w hich resulted in sales that day of fully 1800 bales, alan improvement of $ a \ cent. On Tues day less was done, only 500 bales changing hands, but at full prices. On Wednesday, quite another heavy day, 1800 hales again being sold, establish ing fully the advance above quoted. O.i Thursday 800 bales sold; and yesterday (Friday) only 200, making the total sales of the week nearly 6000 bales—a larger amount of business than has ever been known to be done in this market at this sea son of the year since it became a mart lor cotton. We give our-quotations in conformity with the im provement noted, and with a firmness on the part of holders, unusually well established. LIVERPOOL CLASSIFICATION. Good and fine., , .1 nominal.
