and upon the occasions which would alone jus
tify the exercise of the veto power, we knew
that it could not be true. We waited how
ever to hear directly from Col. Towns. We
now state on his authority, that the editor
of the Atlanta Miscellany has been wholly mis
infoimcd. No such pledge has ever been
given by Col. lowns to any one, nor has he
ever been called on to make any such pledge.
I here is no foundation whatever for the state
ment of the Miscellany’s correspondent.
AVc will now hazard an opinion on our own
hook. The correspondent of the Miscellany is
mistak cn in asserting that “a gentleman” gave
him the information, lie could not be a gen
tleman who would originate a paltry story like
this to injure the election of a candidate,
knowing as he must have known, that the story
was false. If “L’s” informant did not origi
nate it, he must be a very gullible “ gentleman”
to have been so ready of belief.
Those papers who have copied “L’s” com
munication, should do Col, Towns the justice
ko contradict its statement. They should *
state that Col. Towns.has made no such pledge
as is there asserted.
Wc have received the following letter from j
Colonel Towns in reference to the inquiries of
the Walker county Committees. We have
written for his letter of the 27th ult., but it
has not yet come to hand. We hope to re
ceive it in good time to lay it before the pub
lic side by side with the views of General Dun- ■
can L. Clinch on the same subject. It will
be perceived that Col. Towns shows no dispo- :
sition to dodge this question. Can the friends
of General Clinch say as much for him? We
shall see.

LATEST DATES FROM AEG. 14
Augusta Market, Sept. 1*?.
COTTON —Since our last review, there has
been a fair demand for Colton in this market, and
considering the small quantity offering, and the
season of the year, the sales of the week have been
to a fair extent, summing up about 1300 bales, at an
improvement on last week’s prices of aboutcent. I
Holders in this market evince much firmness, and
few it any of them are disposed to sell at present
prices. The gloomy advices received from the in
terior of this State and Alabama, concerning the
growing crop, has added to this firmness more than
any thing else. New Cotton comes in slowly, and
most of that received this week has been sold in
the street, off wagons, at prices ranging from 11 to
life. Our quotations for square bales (round
bringing about ,[c. less) are
