years under the whig tariff. Have you not had enough of their protection to your indus try? But wc need not go to the North for evi dence that the whigs are devotedly attached to their old tariff: The Federal Union a few weeks since, made the following remark: Do they advocate the principles of the pro- ' tective tariff of ’42, and condemn those of the revenue tariff of ’46: No, on this subject, “mum is the word.” —Federal Union. This called from the Augusta Chronicle the 'explicit declaration. Mum is not the word. They do advocate j the dineriminations of the tariff of 1842 infa rct of American industry, and abominate those t)f 1846 in favor oj the liritish. Chroniclers ’ Sentinel , 2 d inst. But this is not alone a mere abstract expres sion of preference. In the Chronicle of last j Wednesday, 22d inst., the present tariff is thus designated. It is an appeal to the whigs, 1 and the following sentence occurs : You (whigs) arc called traitors and murder ers, because you condemn the hateful origin of the Mexican war. You were called the Ur it- i ish Part)/, till, SINCE THE PASSAGE OF 1 THE BRITISH TARIFF OF 1846, your op- j ponents from very shame have felt constrain | t?d to discontinue the charge. As to the first sentence, we reply that it was a whig paper, one of the Chronicle s AVilmot Proviso allies, that called General i Zachary Taylor “thb most adroit skull- j BREAKER, HOUSE BURNER, AND WOMEN AND CHILDREN MURDERER OF THE AOE.” As to this tariff being a British tariff, look . . _ over our land, fellow-citizens, and say wheth- j er it is not a blessing to the American peo ple. British gold to the amount of twenty five millions have flowed into this country during its operation, and there has been no return tide of gold back to Europe. Besides which, the trade has been enormous, and most I beneficial to us. Every Southern man can flee and feel bis own share of the general pros- j ncrity. The whole country. North, South, ! East and West, never was so prosperous.— ; The credit of the Government never was high er. The power and glory of this Republic never greater. Yet, fellow-citizens, you are called upon to : overthrow this prosperity, by repealing one’of i its prominent causes. The Chronicle appeals in this same editorial, ‘to the whigs to repudiate this beneficent reve- ' nue tariff. This is its language. You will give yourselves to indefatigable exertions to maintain the faith and credit and honor of vour State —YOU WILL STAND BY DOMESTIC INDUSTRY, AND KEPU DIATE A TARIFF LAW THAT DISCRIM- ; IN AXES MOKE IN FAVOR OF FOREIGN j THAN HOME LABOR —you will rebuke an ; Administration that has trampled the Federal Constitution under its feet—that has plunged the country into a sad and useless war, which lias breathed its deadly breath upon the Na tional Treasury, the lives of your countrymen, -and the happiness of their homes. To repudiate this tariff the Whigs desire to i elect two United States Senators at the next | legislature. The Hon. John M. Berrien is to be one of them. Will you consent to this, | people of Georgia. Will you, by your votes, contribute to this disastrous result: We can not believe it. On this tariff question Geor gia has hitherto stood firmly with the South. She has stood firmly by the Agricultural in terests of the country. Those interests were her interests when she has before spoken. They i are her interests still. Let her speak through the ballot-box, and proclaim that she comes to j the rescue against the assaults of the plunder ing hordes of manufacturing monopolists. Arrival of the Britannia. It will appear in ■our Tri-Weekly of to-day, and will appear in. oar next Meekly. GUIEU, June 6 I—y Agent at Augusta. Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry. Has the great Author of Nature provided us : with no remedy for Consumption—and‘the diseases 1 leading thereto which are so fearfully common in our country? Has He left us to find relief from ■ that fatal scourge by ransacking other lands? No, it is not so. The best—Nature’s own remedy, is J ready at our hand. The Wild Cherry and the Pine furnish us with a cure, where a cure is possi ble. Hr. Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry, formed j by chemical extracts from Wild Cherry bark and tar, relieves all cases of consumption, and effectu ally cures it where it has not progressed so far as to be beyond cure —subdues the most inveterate cases of the Asthma, even of 30 and 40 years stand ing stops raising of blood, after other remedies fail and removes every kind of affection of the Lungs and Liver which our climate induces. The remarkable efficacy of this wonderful medicine, in many diseases hitherto deemed incurable, has ex cited among physicians great curiosity as to the precise nature of its ingredients. The curative influence of Sarsaparilla in cases ! of acute and chronic rheumatism, has only recently j been observed and acknowledged. It was long j thought that preparations of the root could only he i used successfully in scrofula and disease of that I class; but the beneficial effects which have resulted j from administering Sands’ Sarsaparilla in the most i inveterate cases of rheumatism, have completely exploded thai idea. Colchicum was for a long time considered a specific; but it has been demonstrated that this dangerous medicine in many instances causes the metastasis or translation of the complaint to the heart. This fatal result it is the direct ten dency of Sands’ Sarsaparilla to prevent, by purify ing the blood, through which alone disease can he conveyed to the seat of life, from all its imparity. Died, in this city, on Sunday night, after a short illness, Major James Alexander, formerly of Co lumbia county, but for several years past a much respected citizen ot Augusta, aged 50 years. , Died, on the 9th inst., at Baisdon’s Bluff, Mc- Intosh, Co., Mrs. Camilla , troup consort of Dr. James Troup, in the 53d year of her age, after an illness of three days. This highly gifted lady would haf T e adorned any sphere in which it might have been her destiny to move. 4j*he preferred the seclusion of domestic i life, and gave her genius and virtues to her family —now heart-stricken and sorrowing in the home, i —hut yesterday sohappv, to day so desolate. Who ! that had known the brilliancy of that fine intellect, would not have seen fulfilled—the body returning to its dust—the Etherial Spirit ascending to its Heaven of Heavens—the mortal putting on im mortality—as it is written. Cleared in the same time 3793 bales—making an addition to stock of 3390 hales, and leaving on hand inclusive of all on -shipboard not cleared on the 17th instant, a stock of 18,544 bales. Our last weekly report left the cotton market in an extremely dull and drooping state, as the few buyers that had been operating to a limited extent I had-retired from the market to await the private advices per Caledonia, while at the same time fresh arrivals were c asing an accumulation of stock in the bonds of factors. On Sunday the Caledo nia's letters ami commercial circulars came through. These rather discouraging advices, together with some difficulty in effecting freight engagements, in negotiating exchange- and other impediments, have had an unfavorable influence upon our, market,'as j regards prices, enabling the few htiyefs who are disposed to operate to obtain some advantage from day to day. The sales of the week embrace about 5500 bales, nearly the whole of which is new crop, ; taken for France and England; and the closing pri ces, as nearly as they ran be arrived at in a very unsettled and irregular market, exhibit a de ! dine of A a |c. from our quotations of last week. Our figures are altered exceedingly, and now ap ply only to new crop, there being none other of consequence on the market. The receipts of new crop this week have been 7183 bales; making to | this date a total of 12,236 bales, against 2389 bales at same period last year, and 38,600 bales the year previous. In regard to the growing crop we have the sa tisfaction of stating, the weather in this region du ing the past week has been of highly favorable character for the maturing and gathering of the staple. It may be considered heyoud question that the caterpillars, or army worm, are in the fields; but at our latest advices from the interior they had not yet become sufficiently numerous# to effect much, if any damage; and hopes are entertained that their appearance has been too I late to effect any very important injury. We however, continue to hear considerable complaint j of the ravages of the boll worm, in several sections of Mississippi and Alabama.
