Sailing of the United States Vessels, —The past
has been a busy week in the Quartermaster’s
Department in this city. The officers of the
Government have been most actively engaged
in getting cargoes on board of a number of ves
sels and despatching them for their places of
destination. The following United States ves
sels sailed last night, viz: Schooners Sarah
and Gertude, and brig Lawrence, for Tampico;
schooners Heroine and Whig, for Brazos San
tiago, and the schooner Eleanor, for Vera Cruz.
The cargoes of the vessels consist of hay, grain,
lumber, about thirty-five horses in each,
ond a number of teamsters as passengers. —jV.

The Volunteers. —The five Companies of East
Tennessee Volunteers past this place on Sun
day and Monday last on their way to Mexico.
According to the previous orders of the Quar
termaster General, last Saturday was fixed as
the day for mustering in the two Companies
from this (Hamilton) County, but by some
delay the Mustering Officer did not reach
Harrison until Sunday, when both Companies
were mustered in, paid off and reached this
place about 11 o’clock, remained only a few
hours when the Steam Boat bell announced
the time of departure. A very large number j
of persons assembled on the river bank to take :
the last farewell of their relations and friends. !
We have never witnessed so much feel- |
ing on any previous occasion, and truly wish :
them all the success that can possibly attend
them. —Ch Ufano >ga Gazette, Oct. 8.
DI3O,
At Richmond Bath, on Monday, the 11th inst/
in the sixty-second year of his age, Dr. James
Whitehkad.
Unambitious, yet diligent and faithful in the dis
charge of his public and social duties, his life was \
a striking example of pure morality, spotless integ
rity and high-toned honor. Frank, fearless of re
sponsibility. and clear in the discernment of right,
lie was the chosen Mentor as well of cautious man
hood as of wayward youth. The frequent arbiter
of private quarrels, his judgments are gratefully
remembered as the awards of Peace. In all the
domestic relations he exercised an absolute au
thority, whose potent sanction was the law of kind
ness, whose fruit was unsurpassed devotion.
Throughout a protracted and painful illness, he
exhibited the patience and fortitude of a well-dis
ciplined mind. Although amid the busy scenes of j
active life, the deceased neither professed the i
Christian religion, nor in all things conformed to I
its spiritual standard of duty, his intelligent mind !
yielded a ready assent to its sublime truths; his 1
Ups breathed a profound respect for its elevated i
principles, and his open hand contributed liberally i
to the support of its benign institutions. None who
frequented his chamber ot sickness, will ever for- ;
get the serious calmness with which he heard and
realized the startling announcement that his couch
of pain must he his bed of death; nor the earnest j
solicitude with which he addressed himself to a i
preparation for the approaching change; nor the |
intense interest which marked his progress from |
gloomy apprehension, through perplexing doubts,
and brightening hopes, to the perfect assurance of
a blissful eternity. Deeply did he lament that he
had staked interests so vast upon death-bed repent
ance—yet its fruits were death-bed forgiveness,
death-bed rejoicing and death-bed preaching—elo
quent, impressive preaching to all who heard, but
chiefly to the large circle of mourners who bedew
ed his dying pillow with the tears of disconsolate
orphanage.
