cuts up everything he don’t like—us a philoso pher, he moralises upon the vanity of human glory, the hypocrisy of public men, the mean ness of slander, and shows wherein true hon esty and honor consist—as a prophet, he pre dicts the breaking of banks, the ruin of the country, and the success of new books, never failing when these things happen to call pub lic attention to the tact, that he knew how it would be, and said that it would turn out that way at least six months before it did so. lie also traces up effects to their causes, attributes the sickness in “ our town,” to the horse-pond in the neighborhood, and the pale checks of young ladies to the use of the corset. As the guardian of the town, he refutes the charge of “ a sickly season” made by a brother editor of ft rival town —advises the proper authorities of the bad condition of sidewalks, of the di lapidated state of the town pump, and reminds them of their duty concerning mad dogs. Ed itors get a slice of the cake without being pre sent at the wedding—have the best scats at public assemblies—free tickets at the Theatre, and many other privileges which no one but an editor is entitled to. A TEST DATES FROM LIVERPOOL,, OCT. 4 LATEST DATES FROM HAVKtf., OcT. 1 [Correspondence of the Hallinwre S««.] By Magnetic Telegraph- NEW YORK, Nov. 2—6 P. M—Our markets to-day have been quite inactive, partly on account of the election, which has been progressing with more than usual quiet and good order, hut mainly from the fact that two European steamers are now fully due. Up to the present moment, however, no tiding has been heard from either of them.—- The Caledonia been out full fourteen days. The supply of Hour being moderate, the market has been linn to day. Abouts, ooo barrels, at $6 50 for Oswego, and $6 G2£ for Western and Gene see. Some small sales ot Baltimore were made at. 56 59. Corn is still in good dema* d. About 10.000 bushels were sold at 75£ for mixed in stoie, and 73 a 70 cts. for yellow. The cotton market is quiet, as holders are waiting for the steamers, and not pressing iheir lots. About j 300 bales were so d at last rates. NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 30, P. M.— Cotton. —The very gloomy accounts by the Cambria of which full particulars have been given by us during the week, were received on Monday by private ex press, but being only known to few parties inte rested, some 1,000 bales Cotton were sold at a de cline ot 4 a |e. On Tuesday the Telegraphic ac count appeared in the papers, and caused a sus- ) pension of business, only some 500 hales having changed hands at a decline of Ic. On Wednes day further particulars of the news appeared, and being rather less unfavorable, 3.500 bales were sold at the decline of 1c of the preceding day. On Thursday the sales were confined to 1000 bales in consequence of the failure of the mail supposed to be the bearer of the Cambria’s letters. On Friday, thfe anxiously expected correspondence came to hand, and proved to be more discouraging than the printed accounts. Many persons look Aipon these advices merely as the percursor of fur ther misfortunes, but be this as it may,our Cotton market docs not bear any evidence (*f it, as yes terday 3,500 bales were sold at about the previous cates though rather easier in some instances; and to-day an active demand has led to tke sale of 7,500 bales, at however, stilt easier prices, making the sales of the week 20,000 bales, (n conformity with the latest sales we give the following quota tions —Inferior, none; ordinary; 6|a7; middling, a 74; good middling, 7| a 7£ ; middling fair, 7g a 7|; fair, Baß4 5 good fair, BJ| a 9 a 10. The purchases have been principally for French Continental account, but some lots have also been taken for England, Spain and the North, >nd on speculation. »Si/.g«r.-*-The market is without animation, and prices are declining daily. Os old Sugars, some 200 hbds. have been sold at 5j a for good ordi nary to prime. Os new, some 400 hhds. have changed hands, the market closing at a3c tor inferior, 34 a 3|c for ordinary, 4j a 4Ac for fair, 4| a 5c for prime. Molasses.— The week opened with sales at a ! 24c, but declined to 20c by Wednesday, when 500 bids, were taken lor export at that price ; the mar ket has rallied since and the sales of the last ; days have cleared the Levee, for export at 21 Ac. Freights —Vessels continue soaroe.and are taken up as fast as they arrive. To-day two ships were chartered lor Havre at 14c., and one for Boston at 4c. for Cotton and 75c. for Floor.
