NEW ORLEANS, Nov.
since the hth instant. 11,010 bales. Cleared in
tne same time, 6276 bales— making an addition to
stock of 4 /3*l bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive
of aU shipboard not cleared on the 16th inst. a
stock of 119,045 bales.
laSt re P ort we had occ asion to represent
“V® tton m aiket as closing in a very inactive
state, there being a general disposition, more par
ticularly on the part ot buyers, to await the accounts
ot the aledoma s advices, which were considered
tully due. Indeed there was an impression pre-
I aih ”S r that the accounts were already in the
hands of some parties, by private express, and a
Knowledge or suspicion that they were unfavorable
induced holders to offer t heir stocks more freely,
though without finding purchasers. On Saturdav
the accounts were made public through the col
u,^.ns. mor ning papers, and though not very
diuiute iu regard to Cotton (being merely a brief
summary, conveyed by telegraph) yet it was quite
evident that they were unfavorable, and the con
sequence was that our own market was wholly
unsettled, only a few lots being disposed of—in all
about 800 bales—at prices which indicated a de
cline ol fully |of a cent per pound. On Sunday
the advices were received in full, and proved to be
of a very gloomy character. These gloomy ac
counts, coupled with the entire derangement of
the exchange market and the impossibil?ty of col
lecting negotiations to any considerable extent,
have had the efiect further to depress our own
market, which indeed is so completely disorganised
that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to
define its true position. On Monday the sales were
about 1400 bales. Low Middling to Strictly Mid
dling being sold at 6 a 6| cents, or a decline of £ a 1
cent per pound from our last quotations; and yes
terday, in the early part of the day, some few fur- j
ther sales were made at about this range; hut sub
sequently it was confidently asserted that the ex
press was in with the steamer Washington’s ac- j
counts, five days later, and that they were still
more disastrous than those by the Caledonia.—
These rumors (of the truth of which there seems
to be little or no doubt) together with unfavorable
advices from New Y ork, added to the previous de
r ingement of our market, and some sales were
made at a further decline of fully asto a- £ cent in
some instances, it is said, at even a greater reduc- j
tion. The quantity dispossed of yesterday was
about 3000 bales, and the market closed in so un
settled a state that strictly accurate quotations are
wholly out of the question. The figures we give i
below, however, are an approximation to the rates
paid yesterday, in most ol the transactions, though
some sales are reported at jess. As we said before,
however, there is no settled market; and where
the stopping point will be, without more favorable
intelligence from the other side, and greater facili- ;
ties for passing exchange, no one can conjecture, j

F l eights . —The previous large supply of tonage
has received additional accessions since our last
report ot 34 ships, 9 barks, 11 brigs and 3 schooners.
Under these circumstances Freights have further
gi\en way, though there has been an increase in
the amount of business. We have to notice the
following engagements, viz—three ships for Liver
pool at £d. for Cotton and 495. for Tobacco; three
for I lavn at 1 cent for Cotton and one for the same :
port at $9 50 for Tobacco, one for London at 425. *
6d. for Tobacco; one for Bordeaux at 1 cent for
Cotton, and $45 for Staves; one for Genoa at 1
cent for Cotton, and one for Marseilles at 1J cent
for Cotton. There is but litile offering coastwise,
and the rates have further given way.
MOBILE, Nov. 13.— Cotton. —The past week
has been one of almost unexampled depression in
the cotton market, and a heavy decline in prices |
has taken place. In our review of Wednesday
last, we quoted middlng cotton at a 7^c. —now.
the very highest prices that can be obtained for
the same description is 6c. —showing a decline du
ring the week ol a Qc. This sudden and heavy
revulsion has been occasioned by the accounts re
ceived from Europe. The Caledonia’s advices per
telegraph came to hand on Friday, and the full ac
count on Sunday. These accounts seemed bad
enough, and had an excedingly depressing etfect on
our market; but by yesterday’s mail we received
relegraphie advices of the arrival at New York of
the steamer Washington with accounts to the 24th
ult. This disastrous intelligence had its legitimate ;
etfect upon our market. A decline of £c. was sub- I
mitted to on receipt of the Caledonia’s accounts, i
though the sales were extremely light. Yesterday, !
after the intelligence by the Washington came i
to hand, about 500 bales of middling were taken at
tic. establishing a still further decline of |c. —nia- (
king the decline since our last review fully as ;
stated above. We quote, then, in accordance with j
sales yesterday—fair 7c. middling fair 6£c. mid
dling 6c. and ordinary s£c.; though there have
been no transactions except in middlings. The
sales of the week sum up about 1709 bales. The
market closes in a very unsettled state, and we
very much doubt whether sales to any considera
ble extent could be made at the above quotations.
MACON, Nov. 19.— Cotton. —The unfavorable
news from abroad has brought the market to a
stand still. There is scarcely any Cotton offering-.
'The receipts at the W arehouses have not been
large for the ten days, owing, we presume, to
the very favorable weather for picking, which still
continues. We q note to-day 6 a 6£.
No change in the price of other articles usually
noticed in the markets.

MOUNT EAGLE TRIPOLL
A REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
geologists to be a great rarity in nature and
known to them by the name of Tripoli, has lately
been discovered in this country, although but in one
bed, of very narrow limits, all owned by the “Mount
Eagle Manufacturing Company,” incorporated for
the sole purpose of its manufacture.
The article is excellent for burnishing and clean
ing all finished metallic and glass surfaces, such as
gold, silver, brass, Britannia and steel ware, win
dow glass, &.c. Nothing has ever yet been discov
ered equal to the pure Tripoli, and the common
language of the consumer is, it is the best thing I
ever saw. The genuine article is for sale by the
exclusive agent for Augusta. WM. HAINES.

OAKLAND INSTITUTE,

CLASSICAL BOARDING-SCHOOL.
FI HIE UNDERSIGNED, Rector and Proprietor
; X of the above Institution, relies upon the citi
zens of his native State for a liberal share of pat
ronage. His been established to
meet the views of tW, who, like himself, prefer
i to remove their sons from the contagion of evil
example, and the manifold temptations which beset
them in towns and cities. The course of instruc
tion will be such as to supersede, to a considerable
extent, the necessity of a collegiate education; —or
to prepare his pupils thoroughly for an after course
of either collegiate or professional instruction.—
Fifteen years of successful experience in his busi
ness, costly buildings erected at his private ex
pense, a new and superior
Chemical and Philosophical Apparatus,
and a LIBRARY of valuable books of reference,
designed to facilitate and promote the progress of
his pupils, constitute a part of his claims "to the
support of the public. Without an assistant, his
School will be strictly limited to 25 pupils; icith
one, to 35. A fee of SBO per term of 5 months,
covers all expenses of board, tuition, washing, fuel
and lights. The fee for the first term, payable in
! advance; for subsequent terms, at the close there
of, or upon the pupil withdrawing from School.—
No pupil received for less than a term, and every
entry being understood to be a term, except in
cases of a special agreement for a longer time, a
liability for the whole fee of SBO will be under
stood to attach immediately upon, and by virtue of
the entry. The first term of 1848, wiil commence
on the first Monday in February next. Letters
addressed to the undersigned, at Oakland, near
Cartersville, Cass county, Ga., vail receive prompt
attention.
