CHARLESTON. Dec. 4. Cotton
market, it will be recollected, had heeu very quiet
during the week ending 26th ultimo. The unfa
vorable advices brought over by the steamer Aca
dia reached us on the previous Monday, and from
that time until the close of business on Friday, a
struggle had been gm’ng on among the trade rela
tive to what should be the governing rates for the
article. Purchasers were claiming a heavy con
cession, but factors, whose stocks were very' light,
and completely under their control, would not
yield to their demands, and hence the compara
tively stagnant state of the market during the
week. Similar offers were renewed on Saturday
last, but as holders would not let themselves down
from the position they had thus assumed, the trans- i
actions were limited to some 300 hales. On Mon- ■
dav good inqnuiry prevailed, but buyers were com- j
pelled ta advance their figures, and during the dav i
about 1200 bales changed hands. On Tuesday
the demand yyas rather active than other- i
wise, as upwards of 1300 bales were sold.—
The transactions of these two days were at an !
advance of ;J to j|c. above the offers of the previ
ous week, establishing the following quotations at
the close of business on the latter day, viz : Mid
dling to good middling a7; middling fair and
fair and fully fair 7g a 7£. During Wednesday and |
Thursday the market may be said to have beeu i
brought to a stand, as the sales did not exceed 100
bales. \ esterday there was some little inquiry for j
the article, and between 5 and 600 bales were ta- {
ken. As the week drew to a close the market j
was decidedly heavy, and the sales, particularly j
on the last day, were made at about ]c decline on
tome grades on the prices current during the ex
citement of Tuesday last. The common qualities
have been neglected. The transaciions of the
week reach 3600 bales, against the receipt in the
same time of IGI3 bales. The actual transactions
•re as follows : —29 bales at 6j; 161 at
6L 28 at Gy, 852 at 7; 118 at 7|; 637 at

receipts at this port, as compared with the previ
ous year, is 76,918 bales. We have no transac
tions to report in-Long Cotton.
Corn. —The receipts of Country and Georgia con
tinue light, and former prices have been sustained.
The receipts by the Rail Road reach 3003 bushels.
Two cargoes, comprising about 3400 bushels, one
of which is prime Flint, have been received from
North Carolina, and sold at prices ranging from7o
to 72c. per bushel. W
Flour. —The Flour market has been very’ quiet
during the week. The stock of Country Flour is
on the increase, and the prices current at the
opening otthe week have with difficulty been sus- j
tained. We would refer to our quotations for the |
extremes of the market, but would remark that >
the sales since our last have been within the range |
'tjf s3jfc to $6 per barrel. There is no Baltimore on |
sale, and present quotations are nominal. Receiv- i

some 2266 sacks, only a small portioned which has
changed hand*. We quote extremes from 1 12A to

Since the report of the acc.auvts hv the Acadia
the market has been active. In the early part of
the week, prices gave way about per lb., but
•owing to the very light stock and the increasing
demand, sellers have been cnalde-d to recover
fa.ly J of the decline—and the market cksacs with
• decided tendency upward, afprices a shade bet
ter tha* our quotatsous The amounts from the
interior markets shew t:»e saute indisposition oh the
part oi planters to sell thir crops at present prices,
which we have before noticed, and the receipts
therefore continue very light. The gbomv prospects
of the Foreign markets will probably induce them
-tosendtheir crops to «aai4:ct more freely. We
quote as follows.

FACTS WORTH KiVOWiWcT’”
IF is now universally admitted that the mysterious
power of Galvanism has an important and won
derful effect on the animal economy; in tact, the
whole Nervous or Vital System has been likened
to a Galvanic Battery, of which the Brain is the
great Centre, the Spinal Column, the connecting
j chaiu, and the countless Nerves which ramify
from this important structure, the conducting wires
whereby the generated influence is brought to
every jiortion of the animal Irame. This is not a
fanctfui theory, but a positive and unquestionable
fact, which can be most conclusively demonstrated.
It is therefore no matter of astonishment that the '
1 new and beautiful application of this wondrous I
agent, as developed bv DS,. CHRISTIE’S GAL
VANIC RINGS, BELTS, BRACELETS, 6c c., '
should be of such vast benefit in many of the most I

lysis, Epileptic Fits, Dyspepsia, Bronchitis, Tic Do
lorenx, Neuralgia, and many other derangements
of the nervous system, readily yield to the efficacy j
i of Christie s Galvanic articles and remain per
manently cured. Severe cases, in which benefit
was unexpected, are often as completely relieved
as others.

OAKLAND INSTITUTE,
CLASSICAL BOARDING-SCHOOL.
fIIHE UNDERSIGNED, Rector and Proprietor
X of the above Institution, relies upon the citi
: zens of his native State for a liberal share, of pat- j
I ronage. His SCHOOL has been established to ,
! meet the views of those, who. like himself, prefer j
I to remove their sons from the contagion of evil !
j example, and the manifold temptations which beset
them in towns and cities. The course of instruc
tion will be such as to supersede, to a considerable
extent, the necessity of a collegiate education:—or
to prepare his pupils thoroughly for an after course
of either collegiate or professional instruction.— ’
Fifteen years of successful experience in his busi- i
Jiess, costly buildings erected at his private ex
pense, anew and superior
Chemical and Philosophical Apparatus,
arid a LIBRARY of valuable books of reference,
designed to facilitate and promote the progress of
i his pupils, constitute a part of his claims to the
j support of the public. Without an assistant, his
; School will be strictly limited to 25 pupils; with
one, to 35. A fee of £BO per term of 5 months, j
covers all expenses of board, tuition, washing, fuel i
and lights. The fee for the first terra, payable in
advance; for subsequent terms, at the close there
of. or upon the pupil withdrawing from School.— j
No pupil received for less than a term, and every !
entry being understood to be a term, except in [
cases of a special agreement for a longer time, a
liability for the whole fee of £OO will be under
stood to attach immediately upon, and by virtue of
the entry. The first term of 1848, wiil commence
on the first Monday in February next Letters
addressed to the undersigned, at Oakland, near •
Cartersvilie, Cass county', Ga., will receive prompt j
attention.
Wanted, an assistant capable of teaching the j
French and Spanish languages, and aLo the higher J
branches of Mathematics, or the French and
Mathematics. S. FOUCHE. j
The Savannah Georgian is re-quested to give the j
above two insertions per month for two months, j
and forward the papers containing it with an ac- ;
g unt for payment. IfwlstusS Oct. 24
OXFORD FEMALE SCHOOL.
THE EXERCISES OF THIS SCHOOL
will begin on the Second Monday in Janna- j
i ry, 1848, under the following Teachers, viz: Pro
fessor O. L. SMITH. Principal; Miss C. FOWLER.
Assistant in the Literary Department; Miss S, E.
MELL, Instructress in Music.
The course of study will embrace all the English
Branches taught in the best Female Schools, to- i
gether with the Latin, Greek and French Lan
guages. The experience of the Teachers, the
1 unquestionable health of the village, its retired sit
; uation, the moral and religious character of its
citizens, all combine to recommend this Institu
tion to public patronage. The Academy is situ
ate in the most pleasant and retired part of the
village, convenient to good families, in which j
! board can be obtained on reasonable terms. A ■
number of pupils can be accommodated in fami- 1
j lies with the female Teachers, where they will 1
| enjoy the benefit of their society and supervision, j
The rates of Tuition are such as are common in
; schools of a similar character. No deduction made
j for loss of time, except in cases of protracted sick-
I ness.
