hand to buy, or on the other to sell, and the f
day passed off quietly—sales only 180 bales.
The non-arrival of the Northern Mail on Mon
day, doubtless exercised a strong influence in
checking operations on that day ; one or two
purchasers, however, were in attendance on
the market, some 600 bales were sold, and at
the close of business there was a decided
buoyancy in prices. The detailed advices by I
the steamer reached us on Tuesday, and were,
on the whole, considered favorable; which,
taken in connexion with the great deficiency I
in the receipts, the limited supply in the hands
of factors, and, we might add, the existence of
some demand for the article, have materially i
advanced prices.
During the day upwards of 1500 halos were taken
by purchasers, at an improvement of £c. on the
prices current at the close oi the previous week.
On W ednesda}*, a good demand also prevailed,
but there was a stringency in the demands of sellers
that did not suit the views of buyers, and the
transactions were limited to 700 bales j finding it,
however, impo>sible to proceed with their orders,
they came to terms on Thursday ; and 1100 hales
were sold at even a greater advance than that no
ticed above. Yesterday between 11 and 1200
bales were sold at the full rates of the preceed
insr dayand wbenwe closed our inquiries an advance
of 3to had been established on the prices current
when we made up our former report. There has
been very little common Cotton on sale, and the
operations have consequently run almost solely on
the middling fair, ana fair and fatly fair grades.
We quote middling fair 7|; and fair and tally fair
and Bc. The receipts of the week reach 3005
bales, and the sales in the same time comprise 4674
bales, at the following prices . —l6 bales at 7; G7
at
1593 at 7|; 1155 at 7J; and 1118 bales at Bc. We
have no transactions to report in Long Cotton.
Corn. —We stated in our former report that the
’Corn market during the week hud been depressed
in consequence of the accumulation in the supply.
•Since that period a positive reduction has been
■established in prices, and wc have accordingly re
duced our quotations. Sales in large parcels have
been made at prices ranging from GO to and
an small lots at Gsc. and upwards. Our remarks are
solely to country descriptions. Received
by Rail Road 8000 bushels. There have been no
arrivals of North Carolina, and present quotation*
are nominal.
Flour. —There has been a fair demand fortiiafe
■article during the week, chiefly for coastu ise
shipment. The transactions have been confined
-almost solely to country' Flour, at prices within
■the range of out quotations, principally from 5£ to
$55 P er barrel. Received by Rail Road 700 bar
rels. There is no Baltimore on sale, and present
are nominal. The supply of Virginia is
light and confined solely to the extra brands, which
are selling in small lots at $7 per barrel.
Salt. —Sales have been made from on shipboard,
in lots to suit purchasers at slls and 120 per sack.
Mostly at the latter figure.
Freights. —To Liverpool,Cotton in square hags, at
and 40s. for Rice; Havre, Jc. for Cotton, and
$3 per GOO lbs. for Rice. To New York, Cotton
per square hair, 50c.; Rice. 25 a 37A per tierce;
and to Boston, sc. f° r Cotton, and $1 per tierce
for Rice.
TA LLAiTaSSEeT Dec." In our
own market there is -very little offering for sale,
and that brings from to Gj. The receipts at this
place are 4-700 bale a, against, 32G8 same time last
year.
ALBANY, (Gid Dec. 15. Cotton. —We have
bad no sales of Cotton to report for some time.—
2’uyers are anxious to purchase, but planters are
•determined-to hold on. -Our receipts thus far, are
about the same as last year.
