-ffany incidents of his early life mark the ex-'

'■'•as accustomed to relate with great pleasure, j
I that when he was a. boy, he was taken to drink;
I tea with Hogarth, whose works ho greatly ad-
I mired. He was one of the class who attended,
j the lectures of ißir William Blackstoue, when;
■ they wore delivered at Oxford, and, young as;
I the mind of Bcntham was, it even then revolted;
I : ‘d the reasoning of the professor. As a lawstu-j
1 I dent, Bcntham took notes of the speeches of;
[I -doastleld; and he was a member of the club, j
[I ruled by Johnson, whom he never liked, con-(
[I ‘stdering him t® be a gloomy misanthropist.
, He entered upon liis profession with a pros,
j poet, amounting almost to a certainty of the
j highest success. His lather's practice and in
! ffuence as a solicitor was considerable, and his,
: (the son’s) draughts of bills in equity were at
jonce distinguished for their superior execution.
In one ofhis pamphlets (Indications respecting
Lord Eldon.) Bcntham thus notices the circum
starves which led to his retirement from the bar.
“ By the command of a father, I entered into
the profession, and, in the year 1772, or there
abouts, was called ta the bar. Not long after,
' having drawn a bill in equity 1 had to defend it
■ against exceptions 1 icfore a Master in Chancery.
‘ We shall have to attend it on such a day,’ said
[ the solicitor to me, naming a day a week or so
(distant, ‘warrants for our attendance will he ta
i ken out for two intervening days ; hut it i* not
j customary to attend before the third.’ What I
: learnt afterward was—that though no attendance
I more than one was ever bestowed, three were on
I every occasion regularly charged lor; for each
of the two falsely pretended attendances the cli
ent being bv the solicitor charged a fee for him
i self, as also with a fee of6s. Bd. paid by him to
i the Master: the consequence was, that for eve
ry attendance, the Master, instead of Os. Bd. re

obligation thus to charge his client with work
not done. He is, however, sure of indemnity in
.doing so: it is accordingly done of course.* * *
Theae things, and others of the Same complexion
.in such immense abundance, determined me to
I quit the profession; and as soon as I could ob
j tummy father’s permission I did so. I found it
more to my taste to endeavour, as I have been
•doing ever since, to pul an end to them than to

! lii the year 182-7 he went ever to France for
j ‘he benefit, of his health, and was received with
; all the respect and enthusiasm which the French
j people always pay to men of superior mind. J lis
jurisprudential works had had a very eonsidera
! bio circulation in France, and have obtained a
j very considerable influence over the minds of
the professors, although they are, probahlv,
more than English lawyers under the influence .
jof the vague generalities which it was the ten
j demy ofhis writings to expel. On one occasion.
: whilst lie was in Paris, he casually visited one of j
the supreme courts. He was known on Insert-}
franco, when the whole body of the advocates
rose and paid him the highest marks of respect,
and the court invited him to the sent of honor.
Ho corresponded with nearly all the most a
blo statesmen ofhis time. Wc understand that
he has loft all his correspondence, and a con
siderable portion ofhis autobiography, for pub
lication, to Dr. Bowring, his chief executor, to

E. White A William Klagar,
k- = ESPECTFULLY inform the Printers of the
United States, to whom they have long been in
dividually known as established Letter Founders, that
they have now formed a co-partnership in said busi
ncs?, and hope from their united skill, and extensive
experience, to ho able to give full satisfaction to all
who may favor them with orders.
The introduction of machinery, in place of the tedious
and unhealthy process of casting type by hand, long a
desideratum by the European and American Founders,
was, by American ingenuity, and a heavy expenditure
of time and money on the part of our senior partner, first
successfully accomplished. Extensive use of the ma
chine cast letter, has fully tested and established its
superiority, in every particular, over that cast by the
oid process.
The Letter Foundry business will hereafter be car:
tied on hy the parties before named, under the firm of
"WHITE, HAGAR and Co. Their specimen exhibits
a complete scries from diamond to 14 lines Pica. The
book and news type being in the most modem light and
style.
WHITE, HAGAR and Co. arc agents for the sale of
the Smith and Rust Printing Presses , which they con
furnish to tbeir customers at the manufacturers’ prices.
