AGRWIWVHAL. ■» - ■ ‘tram Ihe Henetee Farmer. THE ADVANTAGE* OF FAI.I.ftW-CHOI’S O VKR SI MMKR'VALLUVi .*». BY JASIES SPKH3V. or MOMKOaC. To Jesse Burl, Esq. —Dear .Sir, In answer to your circuia-, I would observe, that I should not have prelum d to furnish matter K>r a vol ume of the .Memoirs of the Board, had it not been asserted, that* 4 aiiv tacts, however simple, would be considered vui .abb I have carefully watched the progress of im provene nt in agriculture, in order to derive be n.fit from any >y«tem of cultivation, new and, useful, which might be projiosed. Although: many improvements in the business of husban dry have been suggested, which would no doubt be of advantage to the farming interest, wore they reduc 1 to practice, yet 1 shad sj»euk ol but one, which 1 consider the most prominent, an 1 that deserving the greatest utten'ion ; and which, if generally introduced, would save to the farmers of this state, annually, many mil lions. 1 mean the introduction of fallow-crops, and the abandonment of summer-f Hows-alto geth< r, on green sward. "I lie o peticiree I have j had in the system, confirms my belief, thatalljj spring crops, such ;a> oats, peas, barley, and; I potatoes, may be raised on green sward, well,, ploughed,-cither in the f 11 or spring, and roiled with a heavy roller, with h ss expense in labor,;i #nd double the net profs s, than on stubble land ; : that the expense of tending a com crop, on j ground of this description, an J thus managed, would he less than the expense of sunmu r fal-ij lowing, and that good or pour land would not he exhausted us much in growmig most of the above crops, with the sod under, unmolested and un cxposed while rotting, as it would be in receiv ing two or thre-- ploughings, while in a partial 1 stile of decomposition, in the heat of summer,j exposed to the influence of the sun, rains and winds. The first experiment I made ot thisll kind, was a crop of corn, on a stiff sward ol; spear grass, ploughed in the fall, and well har rowed in the spring, without rolling. My crop was 72 bushels to the ncre, worth 50 cents per j hushed —Net profits, £23.30 per acre.—Thei ground was well ploughed once next spring, and sowed to peas : crop, 32 bushels per acre, worth,| SI.OO per bushel—Net profits, 825.10. The peas were harvested early in September*, mul the-ground Well ploughed once, and sowed to wheat ; crop 01 bushels to the acre —Net pro fits, 8-2.00 to the acre. Net profits in 3 years, 871.30. 1 have this year raised corn on land adjoining, and of a siaiilai soil and sod, (the sd!, is what farmers call a sandy loam,) managed irf the same way, save only the- crop was but oncc-j hoed : (wet weather prevented :)crop, 100 bush-j cls to the acre. No manure was used ; and noti fed much labor in tending, as stubble land would | i have required. In the same field, [sowed 00, roods of ground to flax, and harrowed it welli on the nod. The crop grew well, and was the ■bust 1 have ever raised on anv ground. It fell l • ~ i down, an 1 I pulled it while in blossom ; alter which J ploughed the ground once, and sowed turnips. The turnips arc very lino, and pro- \ anise a good crop. Henrivltu, Monroe Co. Oct. IS. 1824. o if From the Nr to Fuss loud Farmer. FEEDING CATTLE, Ac. The following, from an -experienced cultiva tor iu the state of Maine, we have boon permit ted to copy from a communication sent to lion. , John Wullks, of Boston. j 1 have proved the value of parsnips asa sub-: -stitutc for my usual green food. The experi ment was made on a cow, exhibited as a fat coic, about eight years since, at Brighton. It was not long before she was turned into pasture. On carrots and turnips she gavo twelve pounds of butter per week. While fed on turnips she gave thirteen and a half pounds per week. They were better than Indian meal. Vou recollect two heifers I sent to the Den ton bull. I have one now led, and from the produce of her second calf, which was killed at four years old and weighed nine hundred pounds, 1 have a cow with her third calf. 'dire cow' gives lico pails full of milk per day, of which the c i!f takes a little more than half, and is ve- > ry large and well shaped. j 1 The cow exhibited at Brighton met with an accident, and at live and a half months lost her; calf, and was afterwards unfit for breeding. In the five and a liplf months she gave, Os butter, - - 202A lbs. Os cheese, - - - 38 fhs. Milk for the calf, - 482 quarts. In flic first fifty days she gave fifty pounds of butler, and on an average rather more than nine quaris per day of milk to the calf. From the same heifer, which 1 sent to North-i borough, a calf was raised last year by Mr. Howard, which at seven weeks old be sold for twenty’-live dollars. An accident happened to it at live months, and when dressed it weighed three hundred and seventy-five pounds. TRAINING OXEN. Mr. Smith : —A strong cord or chain should’ be fastened around their horns, with as much moderation as possible, to prevent alarm ; they! are then to be taken separately to the side of o|| house or some convenient place, and made fast.ji A house is preferable; if tied to a post they . will wind around, perhaps receive some injury.: There they are to be fed regularly by the dri ver, until they will permit him to handle them; in any way he pleases; if they arc obstinate they should be led very sparingly, for it is well known that hunger will subdue the most obsti-j rate spirit; they are then to be brought toge ther and the yoke put on, and put to the cart be- - tween two other yokesof well broke oxen : when treated in this way they will move oft’with their heads up as if they had been always accustomed: to the yoke. I have pursued this method for’ the last ten vears with complete success. A. C.
