however, hnJ heard of the ability with which many of the natives could imitate different ani mals’, anti was not satisfied with this explanation of the noise that had first excited his attention. He still suspected that some roguery was on foot, and the better to detect it, he placed hirnselfbe hind tv hat appeared to lie the stump of a free, at a short distance from the spot on which he had been previously standing. <ln tin’s supposed stump lie hung his helmet, and bent on tne : <.-d attentive scrutiny, he placed his head between tin- two limbs of the stamp, *» as to be unpercetv ed, t . command a direct view of the quarter fr >\. lich the noise originally proceeded. '1 his, however, was too much for tiie thief, (for such m reality was the supposed tree-stump,) who, un able to retain his laughter, and finding his situa tion somewhat critical, suddenly executed a so merset upon the astonished soldier, and made clear off with his helmet. THE WIFE’S DRESS. A work entitled * A whisper to a newly mar ried couple’—says : ‘ There is not an hour in the dav in which a man so much likes to see his wife dressed with neatness as when she leaves her bed-room, and si’s down to breakfast. At nnv other moment, vanity stimulates her efforts at the toilette, for she expects to be seen; but nt this retired and early hour, it is for the very sake of cleanliness, for the very sake of pleas ing her husband, that she thus appears neat and nice. Some one says, ‘ a woman should never appear untidily or badly dressed in the presence of her husband. ’ \\ bile he was a lover, what a sad piece of business if he caught her dressed to dis advantage ! ‘Oh dear, there he is, and my bait all in papers; and this frightful unbecoming cap ! I had no idea ho would have been here so early, lot me off to rny toilette !’ But now that In-is your husband, ‘ Dear me, what consequences ! My object is gained ; my efforts to win him, and all rny little manoeuvres to captivate, have been successful, and it is very hard it a woman is to pass her life in endeavoring to please her hus hand!'
