ON LOW SPIRITS.—Low spirits is a cer tain state ofthu muni, accompanied by indi gestion, wherein the greatest evils are appre ionded upon tile slightest grounds, and the worst conse quences imagined. An ancient medical writer supposed tins disease to be confined to those par ticular regions of the abdomen, technically called hypochondria, which are situated on the right or left side of tint cavity, whence comes the name hypochondriasis. Symptoms. —The common corporeal symptoms are, flatulency in tiro stomach or bowels, acrid eructations, costiveness, spasmodic pains, giddi ness, dimness of sight, palpitations, end often an utter inability of fixing the attention upon any sub ject oi importance, or engaging in any tiling that demands vigor or courage Also languidness—tbe mind becomes irritable, tli-ughtlul, desponding, melancholy, and dejected, accompanied with a total riot alignment oi tire nervous system. 1 lie mental feelings and peculiar train of ideas that haunt the imagination and overwhelm rite judgement, exhibit an infinite diversity. The wisest and best ol men are ns open to tliis allliclion ns the weakest. Causes. —-A sedentary life of any kind, especially severe study, protracted to a lute hour in the night, and rarely relieved by social intercourse, or < xen tse, a dissolute habit, great excess in eating and drink ing, tile immoderate use n( m 'renry, violent purga tives, the suppression ol’ some habitual discharge, (as, the obstruction of the menses,) or long cottlin. nud eruption ; relaxation or debility ol one or more important organs within the abdomen, is a frequent cause. Treatment . —The principal objects of treatment are, to remove ind gestion, to strengtoen the body, and to enliven the spirits, which in >y bo promoted by exorcise, early hours, regular meals, and pie is ont conversation. The bowels (it costive) being carefully regulat'd by tliooc.c mortal use of a mild aperient. Vv'o know nothing better calculated to obtain this end. iban Dr. Win. Evans' Aporio it Wills, —being mild ami eerie in in their operation. M lio bowels being once cleansed, bis inestimable Camomile fills, (w hicb arc tonic, anodyne, and anti sprtsinudic) arc an infallible remedy, and without ditpttlo have proved a great blessing to the numer ous public. Some physicians have recommended a free use ol mercury, but it should rot bo resorted to; a s in many cases it will greatly aggravate the symptoms, mar 5 For sale by AN i'O.NY & HAINES.
