»eoc« only obstructs the operations of those who are actively engaged in saving properly, or extin guishing the lire. The idle negroes were, in ma l no cases, insubordinate—the great body of them, however, were industrious, energetic, and very useful. We have endeavored above, to give such a de scription and statement of this great calamity, as was in our power, as far us the loss of pr perty is concerned. Wo now come to the melancholy task of recording the, GREAT LOSS OF LIFE that has been sustained, and which has plunged many of our most worthy and respectable fanub ies in the deepest distress. We commence with that of Col Charles John Btecdman, Naval Officer of the port, a gentlemen long known as one of our moat activu and pub lic spirited citizens, an i who on this calamitous occasion, distinguished himself, previous to his death, by his cool, cnorgi t c, and fearlt si conduct, having assisted in blowing up u number ofbuil* dings, and making himself prominently useful in' numerous instances. The powder, in cassoons, prepared for use, gave out early in the night, and after that powder in kegs was employed, which is always a dangerous procces. Col Slecdmaii entered a bouse on the East side ol 13ay st, near Hascll st. in company with Mr M F Turley, a mulatto boy and several other persons with two kegs of powder, for the purpose of blowing it up, placing one in each room; one of them exploded and blew up the building, while the three abov o mentioned persons were within; Mr Turley was immediately picked up, very much injured, but it is believed, will eventually recover, though probably much crippled. Persons immediately' ran to the wreck to extricate Coi S. and the boy while so engaged, capt Dull’, of the ship Her. aid, reported in the evening paper as killed, be ing on the roof; llio second cask exploded, and lifted the roof up several feci, but fortunately without any injury to capt D. who at ibis mo ment is standing by ua in good health. Col S. was then taken out, but life was extinct, it is believed that ho was killed by the second explo sion, as some say ho was heard to make an ex clamation, afier the hon»e fell. The body of the boy was not obtained, but consumed in the building. Mr Schnicrlo lost his life blowing up the house at ho corner of Liberty and King sts ; he also using a keg of powder, in the came manner as Col Steed man. After tiro house fell, the most strenuous exertions ware made to get him out, and it was effected in a stunt time, and while he was alive, but most terribly burned i and mutilated.lie spoke codec edly to those who took hold of him, was carried homo, and lived ♦ some half hour after ho reached there, his alfiic i-ted family having the melancholy consolation of hearing him converse before ho breathed his last. Ho died in his perfect senses, conscious from the tlrst moment that his life could not be preserved. His loss will bo severely felt and deeply regret ted. At the explosion that deprived Mr S. ot life, Mr John S Peart, was also struck dead, proba bly by boing thrown against something and in. wardly injured, as there did not appear to be any wounds externally that would have proved fatal. Ho breathed hut a few moments after being ta ken up. A colored maa was also killed at the eame time. Mr. Robert Monroe, who kept a Seed ;Store, in King-slreet, was found dead, on Saturday morning, having either been burned up in his store, or some part of the ruins fal ling on him. He was most dreadfully lacer ated, and dismembered. One white man, we learn, fell down, and was taken up and carried into a house in Market-st. dead, having it is believed, died from mere fright, or perhaps from apoplexy. We did not learn lus name.. Mr. John D. Brown was on severely hurt, «t the corner of Market and Church sic. that his life is despaired ol; we could not ascertain how the accident occurred. These are all the fatal, or probably fatal cases, that have yet come to our knowledge, Several persons have received wounds, some of them pretty scveie, and there may possibly bo some other lives lost, not yet ascertained; ‘but we hope not. i. Capt South wick, of the schr Empire, arriv t «d Saturday evening, slates that he saw the I light ol the (ire at 3 o’clock on that morning, | -when 25 miles south of Savan nab, being in I a direct line, about uigltiy miles from this ci ( ty. We have in our possession, a cinder, | apparently the rornains of a piece of burnt > linen or silk, which was picked up on the £ morning of the fire, by a planter, 15 miles | distant trom Charleston, where the light was S’, distinctly seen and the noise,ot blowing up * of houses heard. 3 We omitted to mention in the proper place, that the now stores, on the old burnt district, escaped with hardly anv damage, and in the course ol a very short period will with t out doubt, be completed, and occupied. The |; -splendid store of Messrs Ripley, Miller, &Co & at tl' o .corner of King and Society-st. will al- K, so again be re-built, and that with the utmost ffii expedition. K Wc have given to our readers above, nil 5® details we could collect of this awful visi fcf tation of Providence upop us. Wc have hoard R the regrets of the rich, that thoir wealth has mI .taken wings and flown from their grasp. We K. ihave heard the complaints of those who were in confortable circumstances, and in a lair road to prosperity, that they , had to com w inencc the world anew. Wc have seen the poor man grieving that his all was gone, and ■ his wile and children left without a place to Is Ity their Read, or covering for thoir bodies, — ■ and wo have heard too, the wails of the wi 8 dow and ophan, that they had not wherewith « to satisfy the cravings of hunger. All this £ Rave we board, and with all do we deeply, most sincerely sympathise. But while we have listened to those complaints, the con- soling reflection comes with a strong and overpowering conviction that the Almighty has not thus chastised the people without an B eye to their relief. Tho rich have the means B of again hmassing weahn still open to then). He who has saved sufficient for present wants should be lhank'ul (or what is left. The i, poor, and tho widow, and the orphan, are i. under tho protection of a providenc',anrl live L m a community, tiiat will not suffer them to mm warn. Away then with despondency, and |B unavailing regret. To say that they are lljl useless is not enough—they are improper, i injurious, aye wicked; and no truly industroua', i firm and virtuous man will allow vain renret B| for the past, to take foot-hold in his breast Bp but rather redouble his exertions to repair what useless murmurs would only reader more afflictive, te’ The renovation and restoration of our fair ■I city is now tin; all engrossing topic. A pub ■[ he meeting of our citizens, it will bo seen, is to be held tO-nioirow, to take the subject un ci der consideration, and W e confidently predict Bi that fi;e years Irom th sin,.n i that the present H calamity will be forgotten, as m r as the ]osseg B of the citizens are concerned. R * -> iudomi. B t»iile spirit of tho people of Charlesio,. w m it not be repressed ; and the burnt district wp] B bo rebuilt, not with miserable, low, tomporarj H wooden houses, but with fine large brick bull B dings, on wide, airy streets,at once ornamen ■ ting the city, and affording proper facilitic B and acfptnmodation for the transaction o B business. ■ 'To affect lids object, two propositinre hav B been suggetied in our hearing. J)o , h cor template iho assemblage of the Legislature forthwith, that, the credit of ltie State should he put in requisition. One that a loan ot n sufficient sum should be obtained in Europe, which could now he effected at a very low rate ot interest, and put into the hands of owners ot lots at the same rate, to enable them to build up their houses-—the other that the whole people of the State—tor in the pros perity of Ci.arlest.on tho whole Slate is inter ested—should at once come forward and pay two years taxes in advance, thus making the contribution fall equally on every individual who bolus property. 1 tie. Awful Steamboat Disaster. V By the arrival last evening of the steamer In* dependence, captain Wheeler, tho following heart rending intelligence has been received.— 1 he steamboat Oronuko, Crawford master, hence on her passage to Louisville, collapsed otto of her boiler dues on Saturday morning last at 5 o clock while taking in some passengers at Prince ton, and out ot nearly seventy deck passengers only one escaped being scalded to death or dan gerously wounded. Many jumped overboard af ter they were scalded, thinking no doubt, to ob tain relief; and were drowned. Several were left at Princeton (at least 15j dead or horribly . Vraanglcd. / Only one cabin passenger, a Mr. Brown, whs lost. Mrs. Myers and child from Vicksburg, were scalded—the latter died immediately, and litile hopes were entertained of the mother. Out 0f33 who were left on board tho Oronuko, nine died before she returned to Vicksburg, and ptoh ably but live or six of those remaining would survive twenty four hours. Among the dead is one of the engineers, Mr Powers, who during his lust moments asserted that the fault was not bis, as there was a sufficient supply of water in tho boilers at Iho lime of tho accident. Lite greater portion of these unfortunate indi -1 viduals were taken on board at Vicksburg, an their names and destination had not been nor could not be ascertained; neither was the precise 1 number on board, but doubtless seventy five. irt divictuals suffered by the explosion, few of whom can survive.. I It is stated that the steamer Peru passed up i shortly after (he accident, and although hailed by 1 every signal of distress, not only by ringing the • beli but by some hundred persons running to and f fro on tho bank, waving their handkerchiefs, and . exhibiting sheets from the hurricane deck of tbe i Oronoko, she kept her course without rendering any assistance whatever, and after assistance was obtained from the steamers New Albany and In , dependence, site returned and without offering an assistant hand, obtained all the passengers she could and proceeded on her way. hot ai ■ n« „ JU tnrcwM* ; MAimiro, , 1,1 Mdledgeville, on the 2f.Ui ult. by the Rev. , (.eorge Pierce, Mr. P.
