A CCA 1,1 ISO Bit UIFICK OK Ho.M Alt Ij I Kk! Slips from the offices of the Cincinnati Whig, dated Wednesday the 251 h ult. announce the oc currence of a most awful steamboat explosion, attended with the loss of one hundred and twen ty Rye lives. The melancholy details are thus staled. It becomes again our painful duty to record one of the most awful and destructive occnrron. ecu known in the terrible and fatal catalogue of steam boat accidents. 'Phis afternoon about six o’clock, the now arid elegant steam boat Moselle, Capt. Perin, left the wharf of this city, (full of passengers) for Louis, villa and St. Louis, arid with a view of taking a family oir board ot Fulton, about u mile ami a half above the quay, proceeded up the river, ami made fast to a lumber raft for that purpose. Hero the family were taken on hoard, ami du ring the whole time of the detention, the Cap tain was holding on to all the steam he could cre ate, with an intention of showing off to the best advantage the great speed of the boat as she pas sed down the whole length of the city. The Mo selle was a new brag boat, and had rccci by I made i -vcral exceedingly quick, trips to and 1 this place. Soon as the family were taken on hoard from the raft, the boat shoved off, and at the ve:y mo ment her wheels made the first evolution, her boilers hurst with a moot awful and astounding noise, equal to the most violent clap of thunder The explosion was destructive and heart rending in the extreme, us we are assured hy a gentleman who was sitting on his horse on the shore, vvait ’ ing to sec the boat start. Heads, limbs, bodies I and blood, were seen flying through the air in , every direction, attended hy the most horrible shrieks and groans from the wounded ami the dying —The coat, at the moment of the accident, 0 was about thirty feet from lire shore, and was ren ■ s don d a perfect wreck. She seemed to ho torn all ,1 to Hindi r? as far hack a? the gentlemen’s cabin, ami her hurricane deck (the whole length) was II 1 entirely swept away.
